My best suggestion would be to use the more than one job criterion.

"For children who attend childcare before school, the time leaving home for childcare should be entered.

People with more than one job should enter the time they leave home for the first time.

Students with a part-time job before attending college should enter the time they leave home.

People who do not work or attend school, college or childcare should leave this question blank.

Your answer to this question will help in transport monitoring and planning, by providing important information on the volume of commuter travel at different times of the day."

But I only have one job. And I leave home at different times depending on what shift I'm on that day.

Seems bizarre that they don't have an option for that, or a "varies" option, or "n/a" if they're only trying to capture stats for people with regular hours.

I've left it blank for now, will ask the enumerator when they come to collect the form.

Census.ie have their explanation for each question and why they ask it. That's all your enumerator will know.

Yes, I can read the notes.

I'm just saying it's odd that they haven't accounted for the hundreds of thousands who do shift work by even having a n/a option. It's like we dont exist! The way the question and answers are presented, it's like everyone must work regular hours.

I just find that very strange.

I think whole thing about census been used to have an idea for school/ childcare capacity etc is a load of baloney.

My 1st son was born a few months after last census, so this will be his first time being marked on census yet already in school and now 5, nearly 6.

He was lucky to get a place, very high demand in my area.

So how did census look after his needs it didn't?

Not sure if it's been asked before, but there is a question about the number of rooms in your house....it says don't count bedrooms.

Then there are 2 boxes to enter your numbers...with the 2nd being number of bedrooms!!

So do you count them or not?

It says DO count bedrooms. They are in the second list along with living rooms, kitchens etc

should be done online these days, i'll be hard pushed to do it this year

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,067 ✭✭✭✭fryup

yes, there should be an online option (if that's viable)

People are overthinking it. "what shoudl I put here or there, what year was my rental house built, should i say this because of that or that because of this" and so on.

Don't overthink, just throw down whatever your hunch tells you. In the end it doesn't matter one iota. It is only a bunch of categories with numbers attached them with no context whatsoever at the end of the day.

And the reality is it absolutely is not used to decide where services or infrastructure is provided. Nonsesne. The reality is services and infrastructure is funded for whoever screams the loudest for it.

Census is a paper exercise and nothing to get worked up about. And don't be afraid of threat of legal action - there is no appetite to prosecute for anything hardly in Ireland, because what good would it do.

I decided not to bother filling out the census. Because who is going to make me and what are they going to do about it. i met the nice lady who delivered the form and I told her sorry, i was just an electrician doing work for the owner and she'd have to come back another time. She seemed happy enough with that - what does she care anyway.

Well she's getting paid per form delivered and returned, so there's that.

Agree that the census data collected in previous years doesn't seem to have helped with providing enough new housing, hospitals, schools, childcare facilities or nursing homes. They are all woefully inadequate.

I read recently that the Nordic countires use existing government information to compile census data. Finland stopped doing a paper census years ago and now compiles the information from government databases. It saves millions because it doesn't need to employ thousands of enumerators and, it doesn't need to bother citizens every five years to get information they already have. Much better idea IMO.

I thought the enumerator calls back to the house to collect the forms?

They do call back yes. They will call back several times for them. I didn't accept the form the first time so I doubt they will come back here and if they do I will just not answer. And they will do nothing.

I love the thought of our descendants opening the time capsule part of the census.

it's to get a general picture of traffic movements. it doesn't need to be overly specific, hence they make it nice and easy

    Yes. 😊

We have everyone in the house writing one comment each and signing their name.. Hope someone sees it maybe, in 2122 and gets a kick out of it 😊

Like a card to the rellies, in advance!

Ps. Did find this one a bit more awkward alright.

The number of rooms..the times people go out the door.. We are a mix of shiftworkers, wfh and college students...

The number of devices linked to the internet, are we going to end up with higher tv licences?

I found it harder and I have been filling it out for a long time now.

    still haven't received mine 😶

They've acknowledged that some people won't have got forms in time (my enumerator went down with covid literally an hour before she was due to call to me), and provided a phone number to ring to get a form. Someone up thread provided the details, but I've seen them elsewhere as well, I'm sure they're easily got.

    These are not normal times.

A lot of these could be saved if, like in most European countries, you registered where you live with your PPS number with your local council.

It's bizarre how people can move around here from County to county and you don't un-register with one area and register with another.

This would give them good stats on population, where they live etc.

This would solve voting register issues either.

They could then do different types of surveys, research to find stats on religion, travel to work etc.

Also I don't understand why they need to ask on ever when a building was built as they should only need to be informed of new builds since the last census as they have the information there already and buildings don't move.

Maybe they'll just send a form in the post with a reminder about the fine...the threat of that huge fine is enough to frighten a lot of people into filling in the form...

Well I think services should be build before extra houses are build in smaller towns...
