If you actually read the summary you would see that the $30 billion is referring only to roads and bridges in Ukraine.

Aside from the fact there is literally nobody who can accurately cost the replacement of entire cities that have been reduced to rubble; and the real cost is likely to be far higher when all is said and done.

One thing becoming clear from the stories of murders, rapes, looting etc is that the Russian "army" is a disorganised rabble : third rate at best. This could only be happening against the backdrop of bad leadership, ill discipline, lack of authority, unprofessionalism and so on.

It's a bit of an eye opener to find out that the so called Russian elite forces are an ill disciplined, ragbag bunch of killers, rapists and looters who wouldn't know how to take on a genuinely professional army if you paid them.

The Donbas war was instigated by Russia. As with many tyrannical dictatorships throughout history, Russia need an 'other' - a group to blame and rail against. The looked at a pre-existing condition in Donbas - mixed nationalities and identities, and they incited 'their people' (ethnic Russians) to act as they did, and attempt to cede from Ukraine proper. And that created a reaction in the form of the Azov/Ukrainian nationalists. Horrible things happened, and that is obviously worth highlighting - but i view the conflict as being instigated by Russia - im not saying there werent extremists on both sides - there probably were - but the 'conflict' is a real-time fiction that served Russian interests

The Russians very much exploited for their own ends an existing Northern Ireland like ethnic partisan situation in those regions. There is zero doubt about that, but they were able to grow such murderous roots because the soil was already very fertile. There's no probably as far as extremists are concerned. For example the Azoz faction didn't magically spring forth as a reaction, they have been around since the 1980's even before the fall of communism. And they weren't alone in Ukraine as far as Right wing nationalists went. The joke is they came out of a bunch of neo-nazi football hooligans and were allied with Moscow Spartak's own neo-nazi football hooligans. Their fathers would have chugged vodka together and then their sons shot each other. The twisted irony of idiotic ideologies. The Russian propaganda machine can quite easily sell the "Ukrainian nazis" to their people because that history is very much there. While of course avoiding any mention of Russia's connection to and larger nazi groups of their own(Wagner group just one example), or their fanning the flames of the separatists. These Far Right Ukrainian nationalist militia's were supported by Ukraine on their side of it, the Far Right Russian separatist militia's supported by Russia on their side of it, with separatist and nationalist civilians as the minced meat sandwich between them.

Now only a moron draped in their newly minted yellow and blue flags would claim Ukraine didn't have more than a bit of a problem with the Far Right and support for it, including government support, especially in the east of that country, what is also very clear over the last eight years since Maidan(where the Far Right were also in play) is that support for the Far Right has remarkably fallen away to feck all and remarkably rapidly with it. Where once they could be sure of getting a fair number of seats in local and national government, IIRC in the last elections they didn't even get one across the line.

Since Maidan anti corruption advocates and legislation has been brought in, and lord knows that nation needed it and still does. They've been trying to clean house all over the place. They went and voted in a Russian speaking Jewish TV comedian becuase of what he stood for and because he stood for major change. One of the changes he brought in seems like optics and a simple change; he insisted the tradition of having his photo in every official and public service area be thrown out. That's huge in that part of the world where the cults of personality love that nonsense. The majority of the Ukrainian people want change and change for the better.

Like I was saying earlier, a good question to ask Russian supporters and bots is; if putin is so keen on de-nazifying Ukraine, then why didn't he do it ten, fifteen, twenty years ago when there were far more nazis in Ukraine, with more support and power on top? It seems 'nazis' are grand, so long as they're our nazis and we control them like Russia did ten, fifteen, twenty years ago.

It's not Wibbs as such, he's just repeating what Amnesty and others reported from the early years of the Donbas conflict and saying it won't be a huge surprise to find out it was still happening

Well if you will insist on a simple read of a very complex situation that led to this and prefer a nicely wrapped up Hollywood script of black hats versus white hats then fair enough.

They've a neck as hard as a jockey's bollocks. It's the usual Russian propaganda almost entirely aimed at their own people to keep them on side and they're keeping to the script of "Ukrainians are nazi bastards who kill civilians, not us and we've asked the UN to investigate, but we Russians know the West hates us so will ignore our pleas. Poor poor Mother Russia". And many of their people will believe it. It's the script they've grown up with.

The $30B estimate is from Ukravtodor (their equivalent of Transport Infrastructure Ireland here) and applies to costs just for roads and bridges, not infrastructure as a whole.

I'm VERY aware of the history of Ukraine and Russia, thanks.

If there's a Hollywood script being delivered, it's been through Russian military actions.

What exactly do you expect the Ukrainians to do? Apologise to the Russians for hurting their feelings? Perhaps get their tanks repainted for them if they got scratched. If you brutally invade a country, you can fully expect to get a very bloody nose as a result.

They've just spent weeks utterly devastating Ukraine's population, cities, towns, infrastructure, economy to a level it will take probably a couple of decades to get back to normality and they've directly caused a displacement of people on a scale we haven't seen in Europe since WWII.

You're off into quasi-academic, abstract nonsense and frankly I've no interest in even engaging in it anymore.

And it continues to be wrong. Three weeks ago I told you there was a genocide taking place and you ridiculed the notion. But anybody with a basic knowledge of how fascism and war proceed could have told you what was happening and would happen.

Russia called Ukrainians Nazis in order to dehumanise them, to legitimise genocide. The mobile crematoria were brought not for the bodies of Russian Nazi troops, but to burn Ukrainian civilians.

As far as I can see your primary goal on these threads seems to be to insist on respect for and absolving of Russia, and a thinly veiled attempt at both sidesing this barbaric Russian war.

There is no respect due to Russia here. None at all. Russia and its regime and its people, who are drunk on rampant irredentist nationalism - which is bloodlust - are an existential threat to Europe and the world, just like Nazi Germany was. It is that bad. They are scum. And calling them out as the scum they are is the only rational human reaction for powerless individuals who look on at this in horror, of which I am one.

Putin and the Russians have no intention of stopping. Putin will go back and reorganise Russian society on the same lines Hitler did with Germany, a society entirely geared towards military conquest of Europe. He will continue to genocide Ukrainian civilians. The worst is yet to come. And he will continue to threaten nuclear weapons.

What respect is due to that "position" and the people who support it? None.

The problem cannot ever be solved until the problem is confronted.

Yup and the Red Cross, EU investigators and the High Commission of Human Rights of the UN. Putinbots all. Given we're Irish here, or most of us, how easily we forget our own Donbas up north back in the day and how it wasn't as simple as Irish Americans thought. Only the Unionists/Republicans were murdering terrorists/freedom fighters[Delete as applicable depending on side asked].

I agree with everything you said. Certainly, pre-existing conditions in East Ukraine were fragile. And yes the Russians used this to their advantage. Their actions in 2014 in Donbas (to say nothing of Crimea) were the equiv of Downing street arming the LVF and UVF, and encouraging them to 'express their Britishness' - then look shocked and appalled when their opposite numbers responded.

And your point on Putin's supposed 'Anti-Nazi' credentials is apt. I posted a while ago that he personally (yes, personally, by executive order) awarded a Pro Russian Nazi, the 'Hero of the Russian Federation' award - posthumously

http://en.kremlin.ru/events/president/news/67920 link appears currently broken but the award was given

As far as I can see your primary goal on these threads seems to be to insist on respect for and absolving of Russia,

If that's what you understand, and I use the word advisedly, from my posts on this thread then I would suggest your reading comprehension is on a par with your understanding of what genocide means. And no, it still doesn't mean what you think it means, but it's an easy word to throw around when the blood's up and you want to get it higher. Like "nazi" and "scum" and "bloodlust" applied to an entire people. Irony seems to escape you too as that's precisely how a certain prick in the Kremlin framed this crime against Ukraine and her people to Russians.

+1 The comparisons between the Troubles in the North are pretty close alright Liamtech, save for the scale of course. London supported the Unionists, Dublin the Nationalists and a trragedy unfolded over "flegs". Though Ukraine's support for their Nationalists over the last 8 years, at least the extremists and Far Right ones, dropped off remarkably quickly since Maidan.

Respectfully: I don't think someone would be arguing that if Britain+NI or whatever (sorry) had said '**** it, they're Nazis,' leveled Belfast to the ground with artillery, bombed the hospitals and churches, raped the girls, left the bodies in the torture rooms and in the streets and then just fucked off with all the loyalists while this all blew over at the UN.

    Todays update from the ISW:-

"Russian forces will likely require a lengthy operational pause to integrate reinforcements into existing force structures in eastern Ukraine and enable successful operations but appear unlikely to do so and will continue to bleed their forces in ineffective daily attacks"
