It's hard to know even where to begin.

Those of you old enough might remember a phrase Charlie Haughey coined after a murder suspect was found hiding out in the Attorney General's home.

It was G.U.B.U. Grotesque, unbelievable, bizarre and unprecedented. And I think it applies.

Will Smith just created the most notorious moment in the history of film and TV combined.

I mean this ceremony was going down as one of the worst in history and now everything outside of those few minutes will never be spoken of again.

I actually feel pretty sad for everyone else who won. They have had all the good taken out of it.

Tony Hopkins looks great, but is shook. One sympathises.

Jesus, that punch is bonkers, he has no real excuse for that. Comedians tell jokes, none of his movies are funny so maybe that’s what set him off?

    That's it exactly.

IT's gonna go down as one of the worst, be it the joke stealing, the awful skits, and the punch. Also, the 'stream' has collapsed a number of times, even during the winning speeches. It's really bad.

And Smith should be escorted off the premises. Instead, Denzel Washington, Bradley Cooper and Tyler Perry 'comforted' him. But you could see Denzel was angry. When Will gave his speech, Denzel didn't clap or anything. He was ticked off.

I feel like the ratings for this year's awards will be worse than last year. Mainly on account of how underseen the films were.

And someone posted this on twitter, and I laughed. It's accurate.

Strange thing about Will Smith. His Mom got scared and said "you're movin' with your Auntie and Uncle in Bel-Air".

But then his Uncle Phil got mad one time and punched another black dude for calling his daughter a mental case and the dude landed on Will.

So really, he's a product of his environment.

Would you all look closely here please, when you wake up, this will all never have happened.

Even outside of the 'slap', there were many, many moments that ticked people the wrong way. Calling animation a 'genre', when it's a medium, and one of the few mediums' that kept many movie studios afloat during the pandemic. Animators were able to work from home, when live action movies and TV shows couldn't film.

The 'in-memorium' piece angered many more.

Case in point, Josh Olsen (screenwriter of 'A History of Violence') posted this tweet regarding the in-memorium segment (which bore an uncanny resemblance to a Golden Globes in-memorium segment from years ago) despite the show opening with a 'joke' about the Golden Globes.

The whole thing was actually more insulting than last year. And no excuse of a pandemic to blame it on.

Amy still at the joke stealing then.

Will Smith finally loses his mind, the signs have been there a long time.

    What a bore/woke/pc/snooze fest .

The Oscars are now irrelevant. Will Smith and that wife of his… sheezzz… what an eeejit. She had a face like the back of a bus all evening. I actually thought Chris Rocks joke was funny, yes directed but funny. More funny than anything else the whole evening.

never knew John Travolta was so short!

The whole event was a disaster. It’s gone from great actors and films, to who can we include most and of course homage to dumbing down of film due to affirmative action. Sidney Poitier was a fantastic actor, Madea is not.

i love Wanda Sykes, but it was cringey watching her this evening.

looking at this BS this evening got me thinking about films that I really HAVE wanted to see over the past 5 years….there have been none.

independent films are where it’s at (if they get funding). Hollywoods originality has vanished in my humble opinion.

i didn’t realise we were watching the Real housewives of Hollywood tonight 😀

I don't think Smith and Rock are good enough actors to pull that off!

Oscar for Best Headline in Print media Catagory 🤔

Is maith an scáthán súil charad.

Fook, looks like this back-slapping nobs night out shite was actually worth watching this year

Kudos to the few dozen or so who tuned in

Smith getting cheered on by the spanners a short time later getting the gong

    Lol

Neanderthal stuff. Didn't he start in comedy?

    Lucky Ricky Gervais wasn't MC

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,241 ✭✭✭✭Frank Bullitt

Talk of him being made hand back the Oscar over it already. Imagine he has to do that, over losing the rag about a joke.

    Absolute idiot

  • Registered Users Posts: 26,916 ✭✭✭✭Dempo1

Ricky Gervais presenting, now that would have been worth watching 😁

Is maith an scáthán súil charad.

I certainly didn't watch this tripe but looked back at Chris Rock's joke prior to #bitchslaposcarsgate and honestly it didn't deserve the reaction it got by will Smith, Jesus wept what if Ricky Gervais was presenting, Smith would have gone into complete meltdown.

Never rated Smith generally but do now, he's a D**K head.

Is maith an scáthán súil charad.

Looks like Netflix's search for that Best Picture gong continues, though Best Director ain't a bad alternative. I honestly would have thought that this year was its year to grab it; you would start to wonder if maybe the Academy just don't want a steaming service winning the most prestigious award(?) of a traditional studio.

Absolutely nothing to say about the Smith incident and share Labre's comments below; every winner is now overshadowed by the lurid jaw flapping that'll overtake this year's gongs. All for something no less shocking than a drunken bar fight between paper tigers.

    Seemed to laugh initially also

Chris Rock's one mistake was to say

"It was a GI Jane joke"

What he should have said was simply

    "It was a joke"

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,275 ✭✭✭RabbleRouser2k

Yep. A code of conduct was introduced in 2017 because of Polansky and co. Now there's talk that Will may have messed up so badly that he'll have to return the Oscar. I doubt he will, but then again, he may be made an example of. Him and Jada were the 'Oscarssowhite' people who didn't go to the Oscars when there were no black nominees.

Made a big song and speech about it. So... it may be a headache for him.

The Academy did this post afterwards... tone deaf was the order of the day, again, it seems.

On the US broadcast, they cut the audio. Will Smith dropping 'F' bombs tells you it was legit. If it was staged, his language would be much softer.

So this is what a woke Oscars looks like - interesting !

No white people involved who cares..

Jeez his acceptance speech was brutal

Have to agree with a lot of what has been said. The Oscars were always a bit glitzy and false, but that seems to now gone into overdrive. Many not bothered to watch anymore and I wonder how much even being an Oscar winner stands for these days.

Kevin Spacey was basically cancelled. Will Smith too, or will there be a sympathy vote, and he gets a free pass after this?

Elephant in the room. 2 black men and violence, and on prime time TV. I can see US Tea Party types dining out on this one.

The wife has admitted riding young lads in their "open relationship" setup or whatever they have going on

Smith has just brought a whole lot more focus on that

Apparently she was only "healing" the lad though!

The slap was bad enough but I thought the roaring and effing when he returned to his seat made him look particularly unhinged.

He laughed, she wasn't impressed and then he reacted, like she told him to do something. It wasn't even offensive, rock said she looked like GI Jane that's it. Great professionalism from Chris handled it like perfectly. Love nothing more than to see him stripped of the Oscar, they are the worst couple.

I can’t stand Chris rock, I disliked the joke he made, but will Smith made a fool of himself attacking him. Takes the shine off his “big night”.

His wife has alopecia. Losing hair can be one of the most traumatic things for a woman
