Emails from Manager

Not su much a work problem but something that is slightly annoying.

Manager sends out emails to all the employees, which are mostly admin stuff, sometimes giving out about trivial matters etc. From time to time there is a clear complaint from CEO that is disguised as coming from manager.

The thing is we all know that its not the manager writing these emails but the CEO who writes them and forwards to the manager to send out pretending they are coming from him.

Is that legal? Can a manager put his name to an email which is clearly not coming from himself?

Yeah it's the chain of command.

Directors tell senior management what they want. Senior management tell middle management what they want. Middle management tell the little people what they want.

The message will be doctored according to the audience.

Very rarely the CEO will talk to the little people on daily matters.

But the way the emails are written is that it is coming from the manager when it was written by the CEO.

We know the difference in the emails because the colour and font from manager is different than the CEO.

I notice the change in management style in the very successful commercial i was with some years ago where middle management that were decision makers in their own right... when they were being replaced the new managers were weak individuals and i expect this was to make sure they bring the message to the employees... often at meetings things would be discussed and never be mentioned again simply because the manager hadn't the balls to bring to the more senior manager... Generally the top management were very on the ball...

Another thing would be they bring in a consultant and be all the talk... if the consultant was going in the direction they wanted all be fine and things may be altered... if not the consultant would simply disappear overnight... all a game i used to enjoy watching...

There is a divisional or Line manager in all places of employment. If the CEO tells one of his Hierarchy to send out an email he does it, it’s irrelevant what anyone else thinks.

Its simply not his job... why have a dog and bark yourself... they generally send out messages to all when appropriate..

I'm not sure why you'd see it as frustrating.. a CEO just does not want to get involved in day to day stuff .. that is the role of managers ... if the CEO were to send the mails you'd be inviting people to email back looking for clarification/ responses etc .. this is what managers are for.

I find it frustrating because the CEO will write an email, send it to the manager and then the manager forwards it to staff pretending that it was him that wrote it and claim ownership for it, on everything from company procedures to lack of blue roll in the jacks! Manager is totally spineless.

I don't know what you expect.

If it is a message explicitly from the CEO, managers don't tend to mess around with it and just forward it; there is no room for interpretation when it comes to the written word of the CEO.

It's the chain of command.

No he's not....he's passing the information down as he receives it.

Why would he paraphrase a whole email potentially leaving out something important.

If something so trivial is causing you stress I'd suggest you start looking for a new place to work in.

I think you need to leave the job. It seems you are analysing everything too much and trying to find problems. If this is annoying you than you are going to have an issue in every job. This is standard in every company - CEO raises an issue with a Manager and then the Manager brings it to the attention of their team. No big deal at all.

How the manager decides to disseminate the instructions from his CEO is up to him, not the CEO. Most likely the CEO does not know nor even care how it is done as long as it gets done. Making all kinds of assumptions about the CEO and then getting up set about it is for the birds.

It does seem like poor practice to be using managers to forward emails like this, and pretend that they are from themselves, because no-one really believes this.

I've seen good managers forward emails from above with their own perspective on the matter, localising the issue to their own division. I've seen good CEOs communicating directly with all staff, including clear instructions for people to take up any queries with their line manager or HR or whatever.

There are many better ways for managers to communicate other than pretending that emails have come from themselves.

This is the way of every business I've ever worked in, the CEO/directors job to decide what the company wants/needs, then it's management's job to communicate that down the line. Sometimes this means filtering it and making it target specific, sometimes it's just relaying the message verbatim.

Dozens of times I've had to communicate to people about an issue that I didn't think was important but the people who pay me do so I did what I needed to do.

You know 99% of the time I don’t care. It’s that 1% that snowballs to the point where you think what’s the point. Truth be told I like the job but pettiness if the CEO would drag down the strongest of wills here.
