They were discussing it on the-race podcast and they said it will cause headache for drivers. That sounds like a minor inconvenience but it actually sounds like concussion type injury. The last time porpoising happened was before anyone gave a shyte about concussions in sport. Now it's different. I think they'll have to sort it out one way or another because they can't have drivers heads rattling around if it leads to concussions.

Is it actually a big problem for speed? If they're bobbing on the straight, what different does it make? Does it have a big impact on breaking for the next turn or if cars are fighting on the straight and they need to quickly turn while porpoising.

They run the car as low as possible to maximise aero affects , but if they run a higher engine mode can the just run the car slightly higher to Reduce the porpoise-ing/Tortoise-ing/ juddering/bouncing , It wont eliminate it for them but Might make it something they can live with and compete with until an upgrade is found .

Yes , No , Typing through my hole ?

After looking back at some footage , Alpine is almost as bad as Mercedes for it

That's the challenge -- the 'easy' fix is to raise the ride height, which will eliminate porpoising but also have a big negative impact on ground effect, which is how the majority of the cars' downforce is generated under the new regs.

So now that testing is done what do people think of Merc? Lewis said yesterday that they won’t be competing for wins this year… do we think there is any truth in that? The car looked horrible yesterday on corners and the porpoising on the straights looked very uncomfy! Are they sandbagging or are the problems concerning?

I wonder if "skirts" might help.

    This too shall pass.

As soon as Russell finished a quick lap attempt he backed off immediately to a crawl and he was 2 seconds plus off the Red Bull times, his head was all over the place. Ocon I think had a similar problem.

Red Bull don't seem impacted by it to any where near the same degree

I was hoping we would have Mclaren, Ferrari and at least one other team in the fight for pole next week.

If Merc (or Red Bull) rock up and blow the field away it will be very disappointing. Hope we see a top ten next Sunday all close together at the end

Are they getting the 3Kg weight increase ??

Another disaster of a season for Alphine coming up. They really are such a poor team.

They've looked really bad, one team will surely have got it reg chances wrong and it looks like it's Alpine. Going on what we've seen so far they look like they'll be in the bottom two or three teams. That pink livery is awful, it's just the racing point livery but the blue/pink isn't much better

You feel for Ocon, he left a team managed by Otmar Schnaffhaur (or however that's spelt) with a pink livery and an aggressive teammate. Now look where he is.

    This too shall pass.

I'm going to hold judgement on Alpine until the season starts next weekend.

So did Williams have very slim to no sodepods first and do we think Mercedes copied them with there own interpretation or were Mercedes always going to do that?

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

This is accordingbto the-race podcast, but even just from a practical point of view, they arrived at testing and their DRS didn't work. So they just kept high fuel in the car all through the test and never did low fuel runs.

Small agrument in favour if them having a better understanding of race pace due to the high fuel running, but bit of a disaster at the same time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,018 ✭✭✭✭PsychoPete

They normally do but even if they are off the pace give it 4 or 5 races and they'll be at the front of the grid

Their biggest issue is that they haven't got on top of porpoising in the way the other top teams have, making the car more of a handful. Their strategy seems to be to get the FIA to fix it for them, they've been wheeling out George Russell to say how it's dangerous and the FIA need to do something and the usual elements in the British media have been following up talking about how it could give drivers headaches and theorizing steps the FIA could take to stop it. The rest of the teams have got on with changing their designs to iron it out.

I predict a rule change "on safety grounds" a couple of races in and Mercedes to suddenly find a bunch of performance when it happens.

Their DRS didn't work in Barcelona but was working in Bahrain. Otmar was on commentary for a bit during the afternoon session on Saturday and said they he wasn't sure they'd be doing low fuel runs due to the hydraulic leak & lack of DRS Barcelona so they had to catch up on running. Still think they look low mid table at best

I'd agree, I don't doubt they'll get it sorted and be back to the front even if it's just Hamiltons car. Russell is a pr machine and do will whatever he is told. The British media is of course very much in the Merc park as usual but if RedBull,Ferrari and Mclaren are ahead of Merc then the British media will be even worse than usual and the fact its two british drivers, it will be even harder to listen too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,845 ✭✭✭quokula

Yeah Alpine seem to have a bunch of excuses between not running DRS and losing out on running time, but so far there's very little evidence that they're in a better position they were last year. Which is not good enough, this should have been the year they had an opportunity to get back up amongst the other works teams and prove they belong in the sport. What happens if they're also-rans again? Is it another holding pattern while they wait for the next new regs in 2026 and hope they get those right?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,674 ✭✭✭✭vectra

Could happen, but I doubt it. The rest of the teams would most likely object to rule changes if they have got it sorted. Then it would be a Mercedes design issue and not a widespread issue.

The teams will pretty much all have a simple way to fix the bouncing, if they want to find a way to do it and cost less time, well that's what F1 is about. :P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,507 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

The fix is simple right? Just raise the car. It'll slow you down a bit, so it's about finding the sweet spot. Doesn't need a rule change...

Although on the headache issue, I saw Ocon on Ted's notebook joking about needing paracetamol if it's bumpy...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,790 ✭✭✭✭Burkie1203

Merc pushed for a pit stop change on safety grounds because Red Bull were better then them. So if they push for this on safety grounds because they cannot fix it .....

If Mazepin has been pulled as driver surely Uralkali are gone as sponsor as well - how do Haas have money to compete?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,921 ✭✭✭Joeface

Mick Schumacher is a Ferrari driver so I assume they get a deal on the engine price.KMag comes with his own sponsors as well , Gene haas while not a Billionaire is a very wealthy man . Given the car performance at the Test and currently the only American team I am sure they will have a number of new sponsors added. Also smallest team on the grid I believe so that also helps the financial side.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,674 ✭✭✭✭vectra

That was pointed squarely at Red Bull, This would be against more teams.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,021 ✭✭✭✭duploelabs

Because the cheque is already cashed probably and they can't ask for their money back

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 291 ✭✭jv2000

I think I heard in an interview with Steiner that Gene Haas is willing to put a bit more money into the team and that they can survive for a while without their sponsor. It is also no accident to see them do low fuel glory runs in testing to try and attract a new sponsor. I still think their car looks better than last year but they are probably still 3rd or 2nd last in the pecking order. Between Rich Energy and Uralkali they have a good record with title sponsors... 🤣
