God I hope you're correct but I'm not getting my hopes up until lights out 8 days from now.

The Mercs really did look a handful to drive. The kind of stuff that's impossible to hide and sandbagging speed is no good. They looked woeful on the straights with high down force.

Good to see that Haas have made big strides from last year. Their test times were faster than their best in quali in Bahrain last year. Big steps forward.

Overall it's hard to really know who will be fastest. Can't wait for next week. I think Mercedes are genuinely struggling and their porpoising is still very obvious after 6 days of testing. But no doubt they'll sort that out and will be right at the front after a couple of races at most.

An aero issue, wonder how much they need to adjust to compensate to make it manageable and what does that effect negatively on the other side. If there's no sandbagging it makes for an interesting start.

I'd pronounce it porpoise-ing. Can't fathom why it would be pronounced any other way.

    Can't they just say bouncing?

    Or juddering.

Anyway, the shared pool of reserves just got bigger with Oscar Piastri now confirmed as an option for McLaren should they need him. Daniel is however looking likely to be OK for round 1. Both Mercedes-Benz and McLaren can call up either of Mercs Formula E drivers De Fryes and Vandoorne or even Paul Di Resta if they're really stuck.

    This too shall pass.

Fair question. Its an old problem so the term is inherited from the last time it arose with ground effect cars.

Does anyone know where the term comes from? Is it an aerodynamics industry term or where doesn't come from?

Edit. Apparently it's descriptive of how porpoises move through water, bobbing up and down as they go.

Yes and apparently only Mclaren were aware of it and used there experience of it from last time to try and mitigate against it. It was very dissapointing to see a team the size of Ferrari and with the resources of Ferrari not be aware of it. All the others not being aware of it except maybe Renault/Alpine and Williams I can understand as they were not around last time porposing was an issue.

They were discussing it on the-race podcast and they said it will cause headache for drivers. That sounds like a minor inconvenience but it actually sounds like concussion type injury. The last time porpoising happened was before anyone gave a shyte about concussions in sport. Now it's different. I think they'll have to sort it out one way or another because they can't have drivers heads rattling around if it leads to concussions.

Is it actually a big problem for speed? If they're bobbing on the straight, what different does it make? Does it have a big impact on breaking for the next turn or if cars are fighting on the straight and they need to quickly turn while porpoising.

They run the car as low as possible to maximise aero affects , but if they run a higher engine mode can the just run the car slightly higher to Reduce the porpoise-ing/Tortoise-ing/ juddering/bouncing , It wont eliminate it for them but Might make it something they can live with and compete with until an upgrade is found .

Yes , No , Typing through my hole ?

After looking back at some footage , Alpine is almost as bad as Mercedes for it

That's the challenge -- the 'easy' fix is to raise the ride height, which will eliminate porpoising but also have a big negative impact on ground effect, which is how the majority of the cars' downforce is generated under the new regs.

So now that testing is done what do people think of Merc? Lewis said yesterday that they won’t be competing for wins this year… do we think there is any truth in that? The car looked horrible yesterday on corners and the porpoising on the straights looked very uncomfy! Are they sandbagging or are the problems concerning?

I wonder if "skirts" might help.

As soon as Russell finished a quick lap attempt he backed off immediately to a crawl and he was 2 seconds plus off the Red Bull times, his head was all over the place. Ocon I think had a similar problem.

Red Bull don't seem impacted by it to any where near the same degree

I was hoping we would have Mclaren, Ferrari and at least one other team in the fight for pole next week.

If Merc (or Red Bull) rock up and blow the field away it will be very disappointing. Hope we see a top ten next Sunday all close together at the end

Another disaster of a season for Alphine coming up. They really are such a poor team.

They've looked really bad, one team will surely have got it reg chances wrong and it looks like it's Alpine. Going on what we've seen so far they look like they'll be in the bottom two or three teams. That pink livery is awful, it's just the racing point livery but the blue/pink isn't much better

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,623 ✭✭✭✭flazio

You feel for Ocon, he left a team managed by Otmar Schnaffhaur (or however that's spelt) with a pink livery and an aggressive teammate. Now look where he is.

    This too shall pass.

I'm going to hold judgement on Alpine until the season starts next weekend.

Cannot wait for next week, if even just to get a general idea of just how fast each car is. I know there have been huge changes but I can't see Merc car being as bad as it's been made out. I also think I'm building myself up for heartbreak with the Ferrari 😂

So did Williams have very slim to no sodepods first and do we think Mercedes copied them with there own interpretation or were Mercedes always going to do that?

This is accordingbto the-race podcast, but even just from a practical point of view, they arrived at testing and their DRS didn't work. So they just kept high fuel in the car all through the test and never did low fuel runs.

Small agrument in favour if them having a better understanding of race pace due to the high fuel running, but bit of a disaster at the same time.

Do we think Mercedes are sandbagging?
