I thought mirrors had a strict set of requirements set by the FIA? Its one of the safety rules iirc.

    Those look suspiciously different.

So only 2 days of testing left. Who looks good and who looks in trouble?

I'd say Alpine are the most disappointing of the works teams.

Mercedes was porpoising badly again today going by some videos from this morning.

The Williams looks interesting from this pic:

My interpretation is that they are talking about the ability for cars to race close - rather than the performance of the cars being close. To my view, the issue would arise more so if the Merc implementation created a massively different wake behind the car that made it more difficult to follow a merc than any other car - and the regs were changed to allow cars to follow more closely.

Of course it seems they can look to change the rules if they want - but I don't think Brawn was talking about the possible speed of the car, but its wake.

I'm not sure on the details of what would make the mirrors illegal or not but if they're not supposed to produce an aerodynamic effect (according to Binotto's quotes) then I'd be throwing in a complaint to the FIA if I was another team - "it's not in the spirit of the rules" or something like that. The green section highlighted here that the mirror is sitting on is clearly going to produce some sort of aero effect:

Here's another view of it. Clearly not just a support for the mirror.

You could well be right, and considering Ross’ position within F1 he was being deliberately vague during his interview, which is understandable… the first time he saw the car in person was during the actual interview so it wasn’t like he had many answers lined up

Is the top part a part of the new crash structure? I know it's gotten bigger this season but can't find much on it. What I think is the issue is that they have that detached from the sidepods. Which I'm assuming wasn't explicitly banned in the rules but if they're the "sidepod crash structure" then one would think they need to be part of the sidepod.

And just to keep the disclaimer, going the above is guessing and supposition.

We all get wooed by the small side pods, but the tech heads in F1 look at the strakes above it. This is why I am not an are engineer.

Who tried to mount their mirrors on the Halo a couple of years back?

    This too shall pass.

Got to see a decent amount of that to day.

All the teams seem to struggle with lock ups under breaking

Mercedes and Alpha Tauri seem to me to me the most uncomfortable to drive with the "bouncing " pretty sure a full length race with that is going to hurt in those cars. Ferrari look pretty rough as well but seems to have the pace.

Williams look pretty good and consistent which I think I am happy about , didn't think I like Williams

Aston Martin to me oddly looked like one of the more stable cars even with SKY commentators say it was rough , I didn't think Vettels or Strolls head was bouncing around as much as others.

Mclaren was hard to read , really struggled on breaks when Lando Norris did get out , mostly replays of him giving up corners a running wide .

Alpha Romeo , Didn't look too bad when Bottas put in his laps . Kind of gives me the feeling the Mid field his year might be from Third place all the way back . A much clearer picture will Come once Kevin Mag and Mick Schumacher get a run in the Haas , might give an idea if they are closer in the group this year.

Redbull , Perez ran all day and looked consistent only thing I could see from them was small struggles like the rest under breaking , mainly at turn 10

I really like how different all the cars are , even the ones that look like they are going in the same direction have something different

And yes I haven't posted a single thing since the Final race last season ..........avoid all the non stories with bored journalists when they have nothing to report :D

Yes that part that the mirror is on is also the side crash structure and it us normally in the sidepods. I seen a video on it earlier.

I personally think myself the the mirrors on the no sidepod Mercedes are ugly. I hope they are not allowed get away with that. As for there super skinny sidepods well fair play to Mercedes but I am really hoping the W13 is am unreliable duck and blows up every second race like someone else before said. Would love to see Mercedes have to go back to the car they had at Barcelona half way through the season and be on the backfoot.

Does this mean that Merc actually have the resources to develop two completely different cars at the same time?

Do they have two of each? Can they run two different spec cars? Do they have to give both drivers the same car?

    ...so many questions now......

Watched the highlights there on youtube, porpoising seems to be a big problem on the Mercedes and Alpha Tauri.

This video goes into a little detail about having more than one car turn up at testing. It’s not the first time Mercedes have done it, although it seems to be a little more extreme this year.

Compared to last year, these cars are desperately slow and understeers in the slow stuff, the wait to get on throttle is insane.

Williams seems to be having a hard time today, that fire was mental.

Poor Albon caught in commentary just as it happened 😂 apparently trying something with the brakes, obviously didn't work well.

Should be far, far fewer issues with track limits this year anyway. :D

Are the bikes crowd OK with those kerbs with the fall-away on the non-track side. Won't even need to be a big drop to cause huge floor damage so if the bikes crowd don't complain then get those kerbs on the exit of every corner of every track that doesn't have a wall on the outside.

Bottas starts from second and brings out a red flag before finishing the extra installation lap. 🤣

He really couldn't have gone another 50 metres to the orange mark on the wall?

They are all struggling with understeer, the cars look awful at low speeds from the onboard footage. Going to see loads of turn 1 accidents this year I think!

I think this best shows the difference of the Mercedes W13 sidepods at Barcelona and Bahrain

I haven't followed testing vs actual performance in the past but is the Merc's comparative lack of pace unusual or just par of the course? I know they're the King's of sandbagging from what I've seen over the previous few years when it came to practice sessions vs actual quali pace. I dont doubt they could be gaining whatever data they need without showing their hand buy curious if there's ever any correlation. Call it wishful thinking!

That Mercedes looks a right handful. Crazy amount of porpoising and all over the place in the corners.
