    Germany:

This seems to have gotten quite a negative reception but I don't think it's that bad. It is a bit generic, sure, but he puts a bit of passion into it at least. Probably gonna finish right hand of scoreboard but I don't think it's "zero points" bad.

    Montenegro:

Always good to see a country return to Eurovision but this is very "meh". It takes ages to build up, and then ends very abruptly. Not a dead-cert NQ but can't see it doing too much if it does make the final.

    Romania:

The track is ok but his voice isn't great. Needs more high-impact staging to make an impression.

    Denmark:

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    French final is fantastic

    Alvan for the win

Bargain basement Go_A...SOA song was way better, imo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 823 ✭✭✭Liberty_Bear

Two completely different songs . SoA was more disjointed. Fullen is vastly superior

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 9,584 ✭✭✭fitz

SOA track wasn't disjointed at all, the guys flow in the rap section was absolutely incredible.

The winning track is trying painfully hard to be Shum, and if anything was disjointed it was the dude moving from instrument to instrument to show how musical he was, it was cringe.

Shum didn't grab at first listen. It had to built momentum and that it did. Fullen does that from the get go.

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 9,584 ✭✭✭fitz

The only thing that grabbed me about it was how unoriginal it was. It's high energy, for sure, but that doesn't make it good.

I think the French entry is very promising. Has the potential to be lifted even more if they polish up the staging a bit. On the one hand I do see why there would be an immediate comparison to 'Shum', with the ethnic techno-folk vibe, but even so I think it does stand out in its own right. It's really cool to see new life breathed into a minority language. France has really upped their Eurovision game over the past few years (I wasn't keen on 'Roi', but 'Requiem', 'Mercy' and 'Voilà' were all very strong entries) - they may not quite have reached Italy's level just yet but I think it's fair to say that they've a strong claim to being the 2nd best/most interesting of the "Big Five".

It just begs the question; why are there no Irish language acts doing something like this, and if there are then why is RTÉ not picking them up? Doesn't even have to be techno-folk; the Dutch entry with its melancholy-indie vibe is another example of a very strong non-English language entry; I'm sure there are Irish artists out there who could create great songs in that vein.

    Meanwhile, in Serbia:

This is.....a woman washing her hands. And not much else really happens!

It's somewhat intriguing in a "wtf is this?" sense, but I'm not sure it's gonna translate into votes from anyone who doesn't understand Serbian.

And yes, she does actually reference Meghan Markle in the first verse....I had to look that up to make sure it wasn't some Serbian word that sounded similar!!

Here's the actual video of the French song too since no-one posted it! 😛

Playing catchup with the last 48 hours, my thoughts on the selections are as follows:

The Netherlands: This is quite decent, even if it won't be troubling the top of the leader board. Think it'll qualify easily enough and get top ten among the juries in the final. I can see it being overlooked by the televote though and eventually finish somewhere in the 14th-18th bracket.

Montenegro: They haven't qualified since 2015. That will not be changing this year

Germany: Heard so much about how terrible this is only to have a listen and find out it's actually... alright? Would probably be a better song without the rap, but I honestly wouldn't be surprised if this snuck a low top ten placing?

Denmark: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ pretty much sums it up tbh. Sounds like something rejected from an early Miley Cyrus album for being "a bit too generic". SF1 is looking particularly weak so far but even so I can't see how this might make it through

Romania: Terrible hair and outfits aside, it all feels very dated and I don't think it would've sounded out of place at Eurovision 2002. I think Romania will be missing the final once again.

Serbia: I don't know the background of the song, so perhaps there's some clever/hilarious meaning behind it all. Nevertheless I think most will be pretty baffled by this in May, and I think this is another that will struggle to qualify

France: Now this is more like it! I think this is going to do very well for France. Not typical jury bait, but perhaps it'll score some points for singing in the Breton language. This is an easy top ten, and maybe even top 5? Which is a sentence I haven't got to say too often so far this year.

wonder what's the secret behind Meghan Markle's healthy hair?

    I wonder what's the secret?

I may be going mad but I'm starting to root for Serbia to win! 3 million views in a day and trending all over Europe.

First live performance of the De Diepte. S10 gives me Blanche vibes and has an interesting back story revolving around her mental health. I'd be very happy if this won but need to prepare myself for just a top 10 finish -- her stage name says it all. :P

We got a live taste of the Czech Republic's entry during the Romanian national final (starts at 13:20).

Dominika has some earpiece problems at the start but brought it home in style by the end.

Still my most favourite tune so far!

LOLOL!! The lyrics are very unique, much better than the grandma banana ones from Norway. Artsy and quirky, I like risks like this.

Do the pro juries at the Eurovision finals get translations of each song's lyrics to help them vote?

Ireland won't be getting to the final and have a contender for last place.

Genuine question - where can i put a bet on the Eurovision surely Ukraine are a dead cert?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,815 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

I honestly don't agree...it's a fun pop song...I can see it making it out of the slightly weaker semi

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,815 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Not on Paddy power etc but plenty of other options. Very little value with Ukraine they are clear favourites.

    Switzerland

    Belgium

(not officially released until tomorrow but leaked today)

    Georgia

    Cyprus

No time to actually listen to any of these today so will get stuck in tomorrow. Also confirmed we'll be getting The UK tomorrow also, with most expecting that it'll be Sam Ryder with Space Man. If it is him then I think it's actually a decent pick and The UK's strongest entry for years, although not that the bar has been very high either.

Switzerland: Hmmmm.....this could go either way. It's not a bad song but it does sound somewhat like the kind of song that would play over a John Lewis Christmas ad. He has a great voice for sure, but they will need to accentuate that to its fullest extent for this to succeed at ESC.

Georgia: LOL, I have no idea how this will do! Georgia is always among the most interesting countries at Eurovision, no matter what they send, and this one could either greatly exceed expectations and safely qualify, or it will come dead last...I have no idea. Either way, it's a fun entry and I'd like to see it do well; my main concern is that it sounds a bit like a demo, and it's the kind of song that needs a build up and longer duration than three minutes.

Cyprus: It's perfectly pleasant (and very nice to hear the Greek language again) but not a competitive entry. Still, a nice change of pace from Cyprus given their recent entries.

Belgium: Not my cup of tea but objectively it's not bad. Could do well, depending on how good the live vocal is.

I'd imagine it's a cert to win the public vote but it's a fairly rubbish song so I'd question how well it'll do with the juries. Placing a big wager on it is a slight risk in my opinion and for me there's no value in 2/1.

Personally I'd wait for Italy to drift and then back them as they're likely to do well with both public and jury I reckon.

    UK entry

He's a good singer with a terrible song

Scott Mills went all soggy biscuit over it this morning

Tend to agree...no idea why it is currently 5th favourite with bookies.

I am not sure who I will place my wee bet on I have a decent chunk of money (well 120 euro) from betting on that's rich to win the Irish final this year. I fancy Czech rep top 10 if odds are decent.

Is it just me or do some parts of the UK's song sound a lot like Love Shine a Light?

    Greece

Austria has already leaked online I believe but will be officially released shortly.

italy will hardly win it two years running?? that never happens

*btw - is there a risk the eurovision might be cancelled altogether? if ukraine crisis escalates - would be in bad taste to hold it i think
