Hey all, hoping to order our first ever ev today. Have a mid terraced house with driveway.

Ive been googling like mad, and remember reading an article at some stage (I think) that the charger doesn't necessary need to be connected back to my trip board, but can be connected elsewhere? Our trip board is at the rear of the house, but with the porch the meter and main switch is located.

I scanned through the thread, but it's a massive thread.

One other question, if I order today and there is 6+month wait time, can I get the charger installed and just apply for grant when I receive the car (e.g. Jan 2023)?

    Thanks in advance

No. You must have grant approval before you install the charging point

Chargepoint can be connected directly to the external meter cabinet as per IS101010.

Grant must be applied for in advance. Do it closer to the time. It’s not a lottery who gets it or not. Everyone that applies gets it once you have off street parking.

Cheers folks, timing was more a worry of getting the car and having a delay for the charger.

i had my charger installed 3 days after ordering it. Turn around time is fast enough,

what you should do is check to ensure your tails etc. ( cables between meter and fuse board) are 16mm, otherwise there may be additional work needed that takes time.

Ok, but you need to complete the process within 6 months of getting you approval. You need to have the car and send evidence of ownership to complete the process. It's become very awkward timing wise as you could be waiting months to get an installation so you need to time application, installation and car delivery all the happen in the same window.

The house had a complete rewire in 2017 to industry standard. Would that mean I'm ok?

Is it possible to get a charger installed for less than 1200 quid these days? (before the 600 SEAI). Was hoping to only have to spent a couple hundred above the 600 SEAI)

I posted details of a company that quoted me 979 before the grant for an install last year.

    No connection to them.

Cheers what charger do you get? My house is a simple install so I resent getting charged 600 quid for a couple hours work

Tesla type 2 cable arrived today...worked perfectly on my E2008. Thanks Gumbo...was great value compared what I could find anywhere else. Left in the boot now so will never be caught short 🙂

Its got very rough in terms of getting people to do anything. 40% cost increase in year and they have a backlog of work going out five weeks. Tell you all you need, That's not bad though, probably still a cost saving. I need to get the house heating serviced, the heating company came back to me that there is a 7 weeks wait to get an appointment, looking at 3 months to get a heat pump services.

I also got quoted 1500 for an install (charger included in price)

Now that electric Ireland appear not to be doing the eo for 1200 that is a lot of competition gone out of the market

www.carcharger.ie also done a pulsar wallbox with load balancing for me in November for €1199. Then got the grant back. Might be worth calling them.

You can buy the Wallbox Pulsar Plus from Amazon Spain for €623 delivered. Link below is white box with 5M cable & type 2 connector.

    https://www.amazon.es/Wallbox-Pulsar-Cargador-el%C3%A9ctricos-Potencia/dp/B07KN5BP8Z/

Wallbox are Spanish based company I think.

Should be able to get electrician to install it for less than €600 IMO.

    I’ve had a Zappi v2 installed.

Can I use the MyEnergi app with it ? I don’t have a MyEnergi hub, only the Zappi EV charger unit.

if yes, when registering the app, it asks for the Registration code of the unit - I can’t find that on the information screens of the Zappi. I have the Serial number, but not the Registration code.

    Thoughts appreciated.

Do you know if you can claim the grant if you buy the charger directly and get an electrician to install it?

Might be an option if it turns out cheaper.

I will need one installed in a new build soon and the place is already prepared to have the charger installed (dedicated cable from main fuseboard to outside wall) so the installation itself should be rather simple.

You will need the hub for the use of the app which is where the registration code is.

The hub is also required for software updates as well so might be worth looking a getting one.

Some electrical wholesalers have them which is where I got mine and was slightly cheaper than buying direct.

You can supply your own charger but you need get a registered electrician who'll certify it. You won't get a grant without the certification. It's a point people often miss is that you're paying for the cert as much as anything. Crowd who did ours had all the gear to do the impedance checks and fault checks and whatever else needed and to record the measurements on the certification form. You'll find a lot of electricians unwilling to do paper work of any form for nixers. We initially tried to go down this route as we know a guy fully RECI registered, but he said not way to the paper work.

That's a big increase in prices.

I got my EO unit installed by Electric Ireland last May and it was 1100 before the grant.

Can you highlight the part of IS101010 that deals with the wiring to external meter cabinet? My electrician thinks this is illegal! As my fuse box is in the middle of my home I'm hoping it can be wired into the external meter cabinet directly!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 586 ✭✭✭sumo12

    Change electrician so!

Sorry, I'm being a smartass. Yes it can be connected inside meter box. Nothing else can be connected in there. External fuse box must be installed outside meter box, beside charger. I posted on it a few pages back.

Lots of guys have installed mini fuse board inside meter box and then an isolator outside beside the charger. Seems this was allowed for about a month from March 2021 to April 2021. From April 2021 you can connect to the supply inside the meter box but not install anything else in there (ESB rules)

This is the gospel as I was told it...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 370 ✭✭prosaic

But where can we find the true gospel written down?

An electrician I talked to said the ESB can serve a notice saying they are not happy with xyz being in the box but that's about as far as it goes. He said the box is your property but ESB have the power to get annoyed (my wording).

Meter cabinet installs are within regs. It will be further confirmed in a Safe Epectric newsletter due to be released in the next 2 weeks

That document isn't available for free. Can you quote that section? Want to reference what it says to the electrician
