Cruel break for him with that downpour arriving before he could tee off. It definitely impacted on his drive.

    Tough conditions out there now.

Poor wedge shot...looks like second place .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,136 ✭✭✭youcancallmeal

Not a great approach on 18, that's him finished unless he makes that very difficult putt for birdie. He didn't do a whole lot wrong really but Straka just came out of nowhere

It's unfortunate cos he did the hard work in catching Berger and playing well. Then the rain right at the end worked well for Straka

Unlucky not to win but second will keep the family fed for another while yet

Shane looked really gutted there ..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,714 ✭✭✭Xander10

True. But looked a bit nervy when he hit the front. Tee shots at 17 and 18 pulled.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,078 ✭✭✭✭vienne86

You couldn't blame him. Awful luck.

Where will he be in the world rankings after that second place?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 665 ✭✭✭goldenmick

    He's gutted!

I backed him in running after the first round at 40/1. And also in a double with Jiminez in the seniors tournament at 8/1 (just won by 4 strokes).

I think I'm about to have a stroke.

Rain made him rush that wedge shot too. Even so, he played well but could have made 1 or 2 of those putts earlier.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,511 ✭✭✭dublin49

pity, weather and Straka playing back 9 exceptionally well denied him at the death, didnt leave much out there bar one shortish one on back 9.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,093 ✭✭✭CMcsporty

Yeah. Why did he rush the wedge?

it’s not like he doesn’t know how to grip it in the rain!

can only blame himself on the 18th. Bad drive. Bad approach.(easy from here)

vgood final round all the he same

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,093 ✭✭✭CMcsporty

No...But they are world class iron players like Sergio.

so they hit the ball into the right positions at Augusta.

Shane is not in their class with the irons and not good enough with putter. Harsh but I think true.

I mean if Harrington couldn’t win The Masters I don’t see Shane or McIlroy winning it.

He's a very good iron player and if Danny Willet can win it.

Didn't do much wrong really, was unlucky that the rain came when it did. It was a big advantage for the tee shots of the group ahead on the 18th. In fairness Straka had a brilliant back nine and was unlucky not to get an eagle at the last. For Shane to not drop a shot on the last day is no mean achievement on that course under that pressure. That short putt on the 8th? was the only poor putt he had from what I saw of his last round. I'm sure he will be gutted but it should give him confidence for the weeks ahead.

I know! & Danny Willet...that was a bit of a fortuitous win. But fair point

great result for Shane. Worse break of his career is a bit much now. Not like straka didn’t have to play in rain. As said earlier he looked a bit nervous on tee shots

He had the lucky break with his approach through the trees and branches for his WGC win, luck is part of the game

Shane played great last night but this par 5 problem has to be sorted out. I've been banging on about for a long time now.

Yesterday he was level par for the two par fives, both Straka and Kityama were two under.

Over the week Straka was -6 for them, Kityama -7, Shane was -1.

On the PGA tour this season he is ranked 207 of 211 golfers in Par 5 scoring. Last year he was ranked 132nd.

That just isn't close to good enough for a golfer of his quality.

He falls down on the Par 5 because hes not accurate enough off the tee which puts pressure on his irons out off the rough (where he ranks nearly dfl)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,905 ✭✭✭coillcam

Had a look at this after spotting the NLP post on Twitter. He was actually 2nd SG from the tee and 3rd SG approaches but SG Putting 16th over the event. On the Par 3s he was +3 also.

The rain really did screw him and Berger on 18 tbf. Straka had a 7 or 6 iron from 200 yards for his second, still not straightforward in that downpour.

Tough for Lowry but he didn’t lose it, Straka won it. Some last four holes from him, reminded me a bit of Schwartzel the year he won the Masters. Lowry didn’t do a whole lot wrong except for the drive on 18. He won his Irish open in a hurricane so I don’t think the rain affected his tee shot that much to be honest. It was a nervy swing and the rain had some impact but why did he try cut the corner if he knew he couldn’t do it? Just put the ball on the fairway and take your chances then.

It certainly wasnt stolen from him, now if Berger had sneaked it with those 2 chip ins he would have more of a case to being robbed.

Can't agree with that, especially the Harrington yardstick.

Yes, you typically need to be a top putter around Augusta, but a lot comes down to course management, i.e. putting the ball in the right place on approach shots is key. Shane can do this with his short game. If putting was everything, Langer (who sufffered with the yips) wouldn't be a twice winner and still making and cut everyday to date.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,093 ✭✭✭CMcsporty

Yeah I expanded a bit on that with Sergio, Scott etc who were all elite Iron players. Just like Langer. Incredible at getting the ball into the correct positions on the greens.

My Harrington analogy was based on his peak 2007/08 when he had an elite short game, scrambling and putting. Plus his long irons (and hybrids) at there best. He was 36/37 and had already a T5 and few T20s.

Shane is 34/35 and no T20 yet...although i think he will this yr but i doubt his skillset is elite enough to actually win it.

Has the OWGR website been down all day or did anyone get a look at Shane's updated ranking earlier?

Edit: website now back online. Shane is 35th. Seamus Power has dropped one place to 47th. To get an Augusta invite, Power needs to be in the top 50 in the rankings published on Monday March 28th, the week before the Masters.

I don’t think Lowry is good enough to win at Augusta, I don’t think the course really suits him and there’s no shame in that. Zach Johnson is the ultimate course management player and his win at Augusta proved that. He played every par 5 that week as a three shotter and it paid dividends for him. I don’t know why more players haven’t adapted that approach regardless of their length. If Lowry could do that and rely on his wedge play he’d give himself a chance but unfortunately Lowry is a poor putter let’s be honest. The amount of short putts he missed over the season is scandalous for a player of his ability.

Johnsons win was a bit of an anomaly though weather-wise. It was exceptionally cold that year and the par 5s weren't actually on in 2 for a lot of the guys. Whenever the normal weather is in play, Augusta is there for the longer guys
