No, Templehof airport was in West Berlin, so not controlled by the communists, where as Kiev airport is in the hands of the Russians.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

In the build up to WW2 people were advised on how to spot silhouettes of planes and know the difference between friend and foe. I wonder if Ukrainians have had something similar

I wonder how putins family and the families of his generals feel when they see that putins name is likened to Adolf Hitler! Some inheritance to be leaving his grandchildren.

Ukraine only has limited number of combat aircraft ,a good few were shot down over eastern Ukraine 8 years ago ,

By the Looks of things Russia wiped out a all of their radars , might make it difficult to keeps flying if they don't know where the Russians are

It’s devastating to see what Putin is doing. Young Ukrainian people I’ve worked with are highly educated, western thinking and speak perfect English, we should open our doors to them. Putin will kill them all, he doesn’t care.

I didn't mean airplanes specifically its just the poster I was replying to mentioned Ukrainian public hampering and shooting Ukrainian soldiers. I was hoping they would have training to spot the difference

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,604 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

They could try using unmarked planes but it's a big risk.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,291 ✭✭✭✭Gatling

Yes and Russia has chalked up more civilian aircraft shoot downs than anyone else , I personally wouldn't like to be a pilot risking it ,

I was more thinking fake civilians but I get where you are coming from.

time for the CIA to get some anti tank and anti aircraft hardware into Ukraine and into the hands of those that need it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,779 ✭✭✭✭Princess Consuela Bananahammock

I fear the time for that has passed - not going to be easy to get anything into Ukraine now.

I have wondered to what degree the Pentagon might be trying to coordinate something that while the President speaks peace, sanctions or refusing "official" responses; obviously it couldn't be anything American made and need to be second hand, all for plausible deniability, but it's not like the US hasn't taken this route before. Christ they've made Hollywood movies about that sort of thing with Charlie Wilson's War; we'd just never know I suppose.

Seems the border with Poland is like a sieve this week ,

    Weapons and ammunition flowing in

Poland seem really rattled by this - stepping up re refugees no passport required and sending in ammo and weapons.

The question will be what will Russia do about it ,they won't take likey to Poland sending supplies ,and the way putin is going Rogue I wouldn't be surprised if he does something stupid

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,431 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

He won't touch Poland. They're in NATO.

So much as a fart in the wrong direction of a NATO country and he'll bring down the biggest air assault on himself since the Dresden firestorms.

Wild speculation by the ignorant here but I was thinking today about the idea that Putin can be targeted by making life difficult for the rich people surrounding him (these oligarchs)....I initially thought this was a good idea as they might turn on him etc

Im now thinking Is it possible it would actually be a side benefit for him if the West go ahead and do that?

Were they getting too big for their boots and this might castrate them, reduce their power and influence and restore them to dependency on him essentially or weaken them to pick them off one by one..........I mean assets frozen, travel bans etc, that sounds like advantage putin to me, especially if they are trapped in Russia and he has replacements lined up....

Not a chance. They are saying its a military mission and they are not aiming for civilian targets. Mistakes will happen of course but no way he wipes out a whole city of innocent people.

He may have lost the run of himself but he isn't that mad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,431 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

It's possible. You'd imagine it's something he would have wargamed, being a paranoid delusional such as he is.

The question is, if those same few hundred oligarchs are going to impressed being shut down in the international arena where they love to live and play and give it all the Billy Big Bollox.

They may well feel that Putin has killed the goose that laid the golden egg and on that basis they may use their sheer mass of numbers to move against him and replace him with a more acceptable face of Russian internationalism.

Either way I do feel this will end with some sort of internal Russian upheaval, whether at street level or in the gilded offices and leather trimmed limousines of the money men, I don't know.

If Putin gives the order to do something stupid against an EU and NATO member you would hope there would be some resistance from his military

Attacking Poland would guarantee the start of WW3, a war that Russia cannot win

Well not guarantee, Putin could be abandoned by all of his allies and it would just be the entire world vs Russia

    Chomsky(2017) on the Republican party

"Has there ever been an organisation in human history that is dedicated, with such commitment, to the destruction of organised human life on Earth?"

This is why I'm suggested it this popped up in the CA thread ,they are preparing for mass casualties events in Russia or close to Russia

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,291 ✭✭✭✭Gatling

I would absolutely hope so or we're in a more serious situation than we realise, look at the threats yesterday and today against Sweden and Finland ,

We're playing playing a whole new game and only one person knows the rules , and he's only knows one thing ,

he's going to be the victor

Reports of another ship hit in the black sea - panama registered. That ‘s 3 ships in two days - situation seems very very unstable.

ETA - Bulgaria has closed it’s airspace to Russia. It’s all getting a bit end of days vibe .

The world's response to the attack on Ukraine by Russia has been shameful, toothless and cowardly. The sanctions are garbage. Do you see Putin $###### himself? Exactly the opposite. The sanctions will affect the West as much as it will Russia. Besides, Russia has a $600 million reserve. Any affects will take a long time to bear fruit.

Russia has said it knew these sanctions were coming. They've been reducing their dependence on imports. The US, UK and other countries intelligence predicted all that has happened thus far. What did they do to prevent it? Nothing!

Putin is a mad man and a very dangerous person. Listen to him with his thinly veiled threats about reacting with such force the world has never seen to any country who interfere. Going about the Ukraine government being druggies and neo-nazis. Putin should be taken out. Cut the head off the snake. He's a bully and is a real nuclear threat.

And he asks the Ukrainian army to turn on their own government. Sure that'll happen, after the Russian warship taking out 13 Ukrainian soldiers on Skull Island, bombing civilian targets, running a tank over a motorist, etc.

Countries like Germany and Italy will in a way have blood on their hands. They're blocking the move to remove Russia from the Swift banking system. Money can be replaced, lives cannot. Essentially, they care more about their own economic success than innocent Ukrainian lives. And the upcoming UN security council vote at 10pm is pointless, as Russia will veto any resolution.
