That's not how the Russians see it unfortunately.

A Russian work colleague of mine was once talking about a Sergei we dealt with in the course of our work, who I'd hear him talking Russian to. I asked my Russian colleague where Sergei was from and instead of answering he started into a big long spiel about Russians living outside of Russia from Imperial/Soviet times and how the SU collapsed and trapped these people against their will etc. etc. I eventually just asked "What nationality would Sergei consider himself?" and after a lot of humming and hawwing he finally admitted "Sergei would call himself Latvian".

You think it is a yes for Estonia, because NATO, but a no for Ukraine. Not that simple I’m afraid. Some countries are deemed more important than others for political reasons. There may be more chance of the US defending Saudi Arabia than Estonia.

They would have to, the whole purpose of NATO is to defend the smaller nations against soviet expansion. "You can put your missiles and bases here provided we are protected". What would be the point of those states been in NATO if they weren't defended from Russia? They might aswell rejoined the old union instead.

Jesus, are you really trying to defend an army that is clearly antagonistic and has absolutely no care for wartime conventions?

No, I'm not. You are trying to insinuate that I am to score points.

If you can send on source of that video of a Russian soldier firing unguided rockets into civilians, be interesting to see alright. There is a lot of FUD being spread on these threads and elsewhere, recycled videos from years ago and straight up myths like the Ghost of Kyiv (the inventor admitted it was false and he made it up). Accusations of mass war crimes being committed and an army having no care for wartime conventions are big claims, ones which dont really hold massive weight against news reporting by most journalists on the ground either.

Lavrov asked by cnn reporter if they planned to decapitate the Ukraine government . He clearly avoided answering the question, instead saying they would not target civilians and of course mentioned the neo nazis again!

Be very surprised if Zenelsky and others get out alive.

The US might not initially - they have a really strong track record of that, being WW1 and 2 - but the rest of Europe wouldn't hold back from defending, then after some thought, the US would begrudgingly come and lend a hand and then claim it was all their idea and that they won single-handedly, and now the EU owes them an endless list of favours.

They came about voluntarily in 1922 after the Russian Civil war which pitched the Reds and Whites against each other. Part of western Ukraine went to Poland but Stalin got it back after WWII. The decline of the USSR was really Gorbachev and Perestroika. He carried out a lot of reform from 1985 onwards but the real trigger was the fall in oil prices and probably the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Ukraine became independent again in 1990.

Incorrect, if Estonia were attacked tomorrow by Russia, 30+ countries are obliged to and would immediately come to its defense.

On the other hand, if in a fantasy world if Estonia decided to attack Saudi, it might take several months of sanctions and negotiations before the US would decide to get involved.

NATO is a defence alliance, if it does not defend it does not exist. Abandon Estonia and every country in Europe with perhaps the exception of the UK would walk and form their own Alliance. Right now the US is the dominant force in NATO, in spite of Trumps bluster it actually suits the US that the other NATO members underspend because if they equalled the US expenditure their combined military capability would exceed that of the US.

If the US abandons a NATO member it risks creating a new Alliance from which it is excluded and which would be stronger than it.

They have…..Ukraine, a peaceful country, looking to do the right thing, no danger to anyone , simply looking to be exceeded to the UN…and defend themselves like any country and people have a right to…

    and nothing, no help…

    Russia take Ukraine….

the UN, US, EU do nothing as the Russians advance west into Ukraine in a system of organised and coordinated bloodshed, chaos and destruction

Weak leadership, apart from sound-byting , Biden and Boris are as about as useful together and indeed individually as a cock flavoured lollipop.

the tangible threat of Russia in time being able to advance on and into other parts of the continent like France or Germany could become real…

Germany is only about 60% the size of the Ukraine, better defence certainly. France smaller again….

history won’t look kindly on Biden, Boris or the UN.

**** me that is weak. Can't be entertaining such demands. Draghi needs to be brought into line. It seems like the EU could fracture I over these things. What next, ourselves demanding Guinness is exempt from any sanctions!!?

I know it's apples and oranges but consistency and unity in the message is important.

If NATO mutual defence clause is not adhered to, then the alliance is worthless and ceases to exist. Of course they would defend any NATO member.

The other thing is, Russia would not be stupid enough to attack a NATO member in the first place. Because NATO members have nuclear weapons, as do Russia, so to see 2 nuclear powers fight would be the end of both.

Sounds like someone's upset the Urainians aren't rolling over to have their tummies scratched and are shedding Russian blood instead.

They won't be the last. Seems that RT was one of the "unfortunate" victims. Such strange times that they and the Taliban are considered good guys!

I'm no Boris fan at all but I think he has probably done a lot more to help Ukraine than many other European leaders. The UK has supplied a lot of military equipment. The Germans in particular seem pretty reluctant to come down too hard on Russia, but then every country has their own interests.

Nevertheless, Ukraine always knew they were going to be left to fight this on their own. That's the whole point of them trying to join NATO. I don't think they really believed Russia would go through with this. Again you might criticise the US and UK (not sure why you chose those two countries) but it was them who were telling Ukraine that Russia was going to invade while other countries and even the Ukrainians themselves didn't seem to believe it.

Anyway, it sounds as though the Ukrainians are putting up a bigger fight than Russia expected and that might explain why they are suddenly open to talks to end this.

I think Ukraine's biggest ally now could be the Russian people and if they actually find out that 1,000 Russian soldiers have been killed in 36 hours of fighting (if that's true) then maybe Putin will have serious issues at home.

? They are treaty bound to protect fellow NATO members immediately.

The air raid sirens in the background there are utterly chilling. I'm so damn sad about this, such pointless sensless loss of life.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,464 ✭✭✭✭rob316

    Such whataboutery.

What do you want the US to do? Engage Russia over Ukraine? Its utter fantasy and even further fantasy thinking they will march into a NATO country let alone France or Germany.

(what i assume are) air raid sirens being sounded in Kyiv in the last few mins

France seem to be playing both sides well. The honest broker with Putin and now a promise of "defensive materials" to Ukraine, budgetary assistance of up to €300m.

I agree entirely. It would respond and it must.

And for NATO not to respond would result in the US handing over its current position of being the only superpower to an as yet unformed European Alliance. If the US NATO abandons an Eastern European NATO member, European NATO will go it alone.

The US do NOT want a rival military alliance on the planet which they do not control even if it were a friendly one.
