If you can send on source of that video of a Russian soldier firing unguided rockets into civilians, be interesting to see alright. There is a lot of FUD being spread on these threads and elsewhere, recycled videos from years ago and straight up myths like the Ghost of Kyiv (the inventor admitted it was false and he made it up). Accusations of mass war crimes being committed and an army having no care for wartime conventions are big claims, ones which dont really hold massive weight against news reporting by most journalists on the ground either.
They would have to, the whole purpose of NATO is to defend the smaller nations against soviet expansion. "You can put your missiles and bases here provided we are protected". What would be the point of those states been in NATO if they weren't defended from Russia? They might aswell rejoined the old union instead.

A Russian work colleague of mine was once talking about a Sergei we dealt with in the course of our work, who I'd hear him talking Russian to. The answer is yes, because if NATO doesn't act to protect the small nations then it may as well not exist at all. The stability of NATO is threatened far more by a failure to defend Estonia than a failure to defend the US, which doesn't need Estonian rockets to defend itself. If Putin invaded Estonia and NATO did nothing, then every other small country in NATO would drop out and it would just be US, UK, FR and DE left holding the ball.

Can someone with knowledge give a brief history of how the soviet states came to be? I have been watching videos but getting confused.
It was all Russia in the tsar? And eventually lenin and the communists took over and drew borders for the soviet states? Why did he do that? Why allow them to have autonomy when they wanted full power?
And I guess the USSR collapsed when all those soviet states saw the results of communism, being poor etc. and they wanted independence?

From what we've seen so far it does not look like theyre committing mass war crimes - if thats their intention theyre not doing a very good job. Sure just look at that video of the ukrainian man trying to stop russian convoys, the russians are frantically swerving all over the place to get around him. I'm not bothered by the Ukrainians engaging in a resistance. I referred to the attitudes on this thread...It's quite interesting the way posters are ignoring what's written to push perspectives that weren't stated.
That's true and it's something that gets lost sometimes in these discussions - it's often just assumed that being ethnically Russian or a Russian speaker equates to a desire to live under Russian rule. If someone assumed that English-speaking Irish people wanted to live under English rule, they would be corrected on that fairly quickly.
Attacking Ukraine is maybe not the smartest move by the end of all this, but it's too early to predict what the outcome will be and what happens in the longer term for Putin and Russia...and Ukraine obviously.
But it's not totally devoid of logic or indictative of a madman. Putin knew there would be sanctions and condemnation and was prepared to weather that storm to achieve his goals. Will he achieve them remains to be seen, and if the price will prove worth it.
Attacking a NATO country is another ball-game altogether and if he was so stupid as to try it, we could safely assume he is, indeed, a madman. A well prepared NATO force would flatten any Russia attack. Even Putin has publicly acknowledged it, hence the threats of nuclear war if there's intervention in Ukraine.
That's what we know of, within 48 hours. You'd be certain there are other incidents like Russian soldiers dressed as Ukranian soldiers and engaging in gunfights. There'll be plenty of examples by the time this is finished if this is the rate they're commiting war crimes at.
Afghanistan was a much different time, and the geographical location is important. Ukraine is a far different scenario. Between sanctions and international pressure, there's a lot of possibility for the peaceful release of Ukraine, dependent on certain assurances by the West. TBH I doubt that Russia will be able to remain in Ukraine for longer than a decade, and would likely leave well before that, if they were given the excuse to do so. Ukraine is going to be a massive headache and economic drain for the Russians.
