The UKMO would be great if it came off, but as I mentioned earlier I think it will play out like the latest GFS depicts. I just hope there are no more nudges north, or then it will be just a washout with snow confined to the mountains and we can probably kiss goodbye to the wintry showers Friday afternoon too. It will be real kick in the teeth if we miss out on both a dumping of snow and stormy conditions. Although i think we will get the very strong winds but not the snow Well , I guess some people won't see it as a kick in the teeth if we do miss out 😅

No, certainly not as of now. Storm likely to be gone by lunch time. You could have snow but you can cancel at last minute in those circumstances if necessary I assume.

Nice water vapour loop, showing the low centre just about developing in the left rear quadrant of the main southwesterly jetstreak, while another northwesterly jetstreak can be seen moving across New Foundland.

An 18Z sounding from a ship at 46.5N 43.4W clocked the main southwesterly streak at 290 kph at 300 hPa, while 500 and 700 hPa speeds were 204 and 126 kph, respectively. Such a confluent low-amplitude upper jet favours a Shapiro-Keyser structure to develop which will be moving at roughly 70% of the 700-hPa windspeed. Blink and Eu'll mice it.

I really don't get this new trend of wanting kids out of school and work places to be closed every time we get some weather. It really has become common since the hype over Ophelia, now everyone is looking for the easy day off. How did we ever manage in the '80s and '90s, before the millennial generation?

A busy Friday morning commute with potential heavy snow in a country where most don't know how to drive in snow is a small bit more than "some weather". People should heed whatever warnings given tomorrow.

Can always remember school closing for bad weather 🤷‍♂️ and that was 90s, the risk of road debris and falling trees is too high with buses full of children imo.

We'll see exactly how much disruption occurs, but I don't think it will be at red levels. It will be HYPED to that level alright.

I work from home. It's a major Pain in the Ass to have the kids off school. I'll be working unless the power goes out.

That said I'd rather have the schools close than have what happened during Darwin happen again

The media will force Met Éireann to go red? What do some posters be smoking...

Met Éireann sit with the National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management on a crisis event team whenever these storms arise. They've met a few times this week already. There are, as we know, very fine margins in calling high winds hazards from disruptive to dangerous and, as we also know, when it goes bad, like for Storm Barra, accusations of crying wolf are made.

My guess would be that a very, very late call will be made tomorrow evening on red warnings for 3 or 4 coastal counties, once the storm track is clearer, probably in time for the 6pm news to make sure social media and text alerts can carry it in time as well. The problem is, though the storm will be at its peak of school travel at 9am,it will be blown out by lunchtime and so Met Éireann are largely DITDDITD here.

But don't anyone be foolish enough to think the media will dictate the warning level. That's just crazy talk.

Can you say for sure that it is safe to open schools on Friday

If it was your call, based on the current guidance would you send tens of thousands of children into the Peak of this storm on Friday morning?

There is not going to be any significant snow in populated areas. May cause some disruption in higher rural locations, but not any place where there is a noticeable rush hour.

Ah this forum never fails to make me smile 😊 the yays and nays! Looking forward to the morning, see what the latest is! Come on the snow ❄️

If that's a reply to my post then I think you picked it up wrongly. I meant the media will hype the storm to be jaysus, but I don't mean they'll influence M.É.

You have no idea whether it will or not, the models are still not in agreement over the exact track. Making assumptions at this point are no help to anyone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,557 ✭✭✭Widdensushi

But there's posters asking about keeping the kids out of school for today

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,522 ✭✭✭endainoz

And as I said people should heed whatever warnings are given. There are no warnings in place for Thursday, so carry on. It doesn't take much to read a forecast.

It's too early for any respectable forecaster to make a decision based on current data, but it doesn't stop the new generation from making that call now and demanding schools be closed. That's my point. If Met Éireann issue warnings closer to the time the so be it, but some people love to jump the gun to get a day off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,261 ✭✭✭Gaoth Laidir

I never got days off, unless it was for frozen pipes. Not for a short spell of wind or the chance of a bit of snow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,551 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

No, to be fair, the fella referred to 'tomorrow' in a post made after midnight, I took it to mean Friday that he was asking about.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,275 ✭✭✭✭Akrasia

Apart from a few Internet randomers nobody is calling for this. People are speculating about whether the call will be made, but most people seem to be on board with accepting the experts call based on the best available evidence

If you're close to my generation seatbelts were optional, petrol had lead added to it, school buses only had aspirations of safety and kids grew up addicted to nicotine and legally able to buy it from 16 years old

The good old days had some flaws

Things have downgraded significantly overnight. Its looking a regular type storm now, force 10 about right at its worst. Passes over very quick like just 3 hours.

Snow potential also disappearing primarily because the ppn intensity has backed off. They will be some falling snow but with it being lighter the risk of lying snow has diminished.

As the phrase goes if it's too good to be true it usually is lol

Can't believe that beeb forecast lunchtime yesterday, it now looks totally ott. They have lost huge credibility since they parted ways with Met Office.

Re Cork, stormy between 7 and 10am which still coincides with rush hour! ,Snow potential here best chance early afternoon as a few potential showers move in

Whatever about us, still looks pretty rough/potentially severe for southern England and Wales so I would not dismiss their forecast.
