Free To Air on Satellite but you have to add as other channels as it's not on the EPG anymore.

    There's a subscription service online

There is a CNN subscription online but it is currently only legally available to people in the UK. It means that other then the “other channels” method on satellite CNN have withdrawn from the Irish market without giving any alternative legal option to view their channel.

Service is still there, still Free To Air. What's changed is that they aren't paying to promote it on SKY EPG or Freesat EPG.

If they get more income via subscriptions then they won't be coming back. Hold off in the hope they do a deal with Virgin/SKY.

The failing CNN+ is closing down.

Just to say that, contrary to some of the posts above, CNN is still on the Sky EPG in Ireland. Their distribution strategy now looks a bit of a mess. They’ve burnt their bridges with some providers in aid of a streaming service which will now never launch. Maybe they can go on Discovery+, perhaps.

Any idea why it came off Freesat and is it likely to return?

Why it came up Freesat and other platforms; was apparently to drive customers towards their streaming service. That strategy is now in tatters (though they are still offering a stream of CNN International only in the U.K.). As to whether it will be back your guess is as good as mine.
