Is it wrong I wish he wasn't? would rather invest in peeps going to be here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭Dubinusa

I suppose the results are more important. Robert's is a good hooker. I imagine he comes right in.

Know little about McCormick, though he does seem to be highly rated.

edit* McKendry on twitter - Dan says they’re looking at bringing in an IQ hooker.

Cooney & Stew likely to miss Scarlets.

Team selections are going to be interesting!

Wonder would Niall Annett be worth a shout, think his contract finishes this season also.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,152 ✭✭✭✭bilston

Moving forward Herring, Andrew, Stewart and McCormick should be enough.

Signing a journeyman IQ hooker would be short sighted IMO....unless Stewart and/or McCormick aren't up to it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,538 ✭✭✭launish116

    Was thinking that also.

Stewart's injury record would potentially be of concern & McCormick is only U20. If they were elsewhere would be they be further down the line, potentially yes.

But I'd far rather their fast tracked and effort put in than another journeyman.

Can't understand why Andrew is being snubbed, he was in form of his life last season.

Jonny Murphy seems to be out of contract with Connacht at the end of the season.

So - according to injury update ( https://ulster.rugby/content/squad-update-26-january-2022 ) Stewart Moore is still out and Warwick is back.

To be honest, EOS looks to be getting back to his old self, and I'd love to see McGrath back to where he was, so I think I'd let EOS and McGrath go again.

Ironically, we'll be short at centre with Hume, McCloskey, Marshall, Moore and Addison all unavailable. So, is it:

    12) Curtis

    13) Moxham

    Or maybe

    12) Madigan

    13) Curtis

Some serious selection head aches coming up, can't wait to see how we roll the dice.

Does EOS warrant a rest? I'd expect McGrath would love to start next week against Leinster. Odd to think we currently have 3 decent props competing to play now.

We're pretty tight in row also, if Kearny has left. Vermuelen could do with a week off also and would hope McCann could get up and running again.

Curtis & Moxham/Postlethwaite. Leave Madigan for out half/bench cover.

On the hooker note, fews names IQ being discussed; Niall Annett (Worcester), Byran Byrne (Bristol),George McGuigan (Newcastle), Tadgh McElroy (London Irish)

Niall Annett would be an interesting one.

Wonder if Jude Postelwaite or Aaron Sexton will get a run on Friday in the backs.

Maybe a chance for Ben Carson then.

I suppose Lyttle could be fit.

Conor Rankin is another who could get a shot.

    Doak

    Burns

    Lyttle

    Moxham

    Curtis

    Gileoy

    McIlroy

    Shanahan, Madigan, AN Other...

    That's assuming Lyttle is fit.

    Have I forgotten anyone?

Madigan could fit into the outside backs somewhere as well which might mean a 6/2 split and Curtis and even Doak can cover 10 if necessary.

Lyttle was running through training with the team before the Clermont game.

I sked someone I know who's in the Ulster set-up (though nothing to do with players) what the crack was with Sexton. He seems to be scything through teams for Malone - was there concern about his basics? Were his nuts and bolts not good enough? Said they hadnt heard anything to that effect - he was still highly rated. They said they thought Dan just rated Moxham's physicality. Although they were equally perplexed themselves at Moxham being quite so far up the pecking order.

Senior forwards & academy backline this could be a laugh!

6/2 split and hope our forwards can keep them on the back foot. If it's a 5/3 split maybe let sexton come on as the game opens up.

Not been overly impressed with Sexton whenever I've got to see him tbh but he's obviously someone worth persisting with, some players just take a little longer. Good to hear the coaches still rate him anyway.

Moxham was someone I thought would take a few years to get any consistent game time, I think I might have been 50/50 on whether he would get into the academy as well. His size and physicality were always his selling points but I thought his basics were a little behind, his defence has definitely improved anyway. He might be someone who tears it up in training but hasn't really shown too much in whatever game time he's gotten, so Dan's just being patient with him.

Didn't he come to rugby late? Probably is behind. As long as he gets there... The coaching team are very big on the importance of attitude, so he must have impressed them in that context anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,152 ✭✭✭✭bilston

Said it before but I don't see it with Moxham. Maybe they want him to be the new McCloskey

Ulster team to play Scarlets Rugby, United Rugby Championship Round 11, Friday 28 January at Kingspan Stadium, 7.35pm kick-off, live on Premier Sports

(15-9) Ethan McIlroy, Craig Gilroy, Ben Moxham, Angus Curtis, Rob Lyttle, Billy Burns, Nathan Doak.

(1-8) Eric O’Sullivan, John Andrew, Marty Moore, Alan O’Connor (Capt.), Sam Carter, Greg Jones, Marcus Rea, Duane Vermeulen.

Replacements: Brad Roberts, Jack McGrath, Gareth Milasinovich, Mick Kearney, David McCann, David Shanahan, Ian Madigan, Aaron Sexton.

Don't get starting Vermeulen, but I suspect it's about getting the maximum points out of this game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭Dubinusa

Sexton on the bench! Hope to see what he can do?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,117 ✭✭✭Paul Smeenus

One year extensions for Gilroy, McGrath, Jones and ReaJea.

Makes sense for Gilroy, who's getting on, but dunno why Rea is only getting a year. At this stage, he must be ahead of his brother and Reidy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,538 ✭✭✭launish116

    More conservative than I thought.

Milasnovich didn't stay with Saracens to long.

    Vermeulen looked gassed.

    Good to see Kearny back.

No idea what Dan sees in Jones over McCann.

I reckon Vermuelen will play this week, next week against Connacht, and then sit out the Cardiff and Dragons games.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,117 ✭✭✭Paul Smeenus

Yeah, sounds about right. I know we're all very excited about Europe but we can't put all our eggs in that basket. We need to keep up the pressure on the URC table.
