    I'd be very surprised.

He's not good enough. He's not as good as Herring, Stewart, possibly Andrew, possibly McCormick currently but certainly doesn't have the same ceiling, which is true of Walker as well.

If we don't get anything from this game I would guess this would be the first time we ever end a euro campaign with 0 points.

So from that perspective getting something is important.

  • Subscribers Posts: 42,486 ✭✭✭✭sydthebeat

Ah exeter are completely throwing this.

only 2 starters retained from last weeks 1st XV in the win over benetton, 6 of the 8 reserves from that game starting.

    a back row at 4…. a 9 with 1 start this season…. academy players at 11, 21 and 23

Thats a very callow exeter line up

"...Thats a very callow exeter line up..."

Never underestimate Ulster's ability to find a defeat in the most unlikely of places...

Short term injury cover deal for Lyttle. An Dalton has re-signed.What has happened our academy locks?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 217 ✭✭ljsulster

Hopes and Irvine both move onto senior deals also. Treadwell and O’Connor likely away

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,505 ✭✭✭launish116

Would see us lacking true experience and true 2nd rows. Sheridan and Izzy really aren't out & out second rows.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,704 ✭✭✭Paul Smeenus

Dalton getting another rattle as well. And James Humphreys moving into one year senior deal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,505 ✭✭✭launish116

Can't deny the home grown approach!

Richie didnt wait around with moving Jack up the depth chart at 10.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,704 ✭✭✭Paul Smeenus

    Not undeserved, in fairness.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 988 ✭✭✭Scythica

Agreed, I had high hopes of Morgan after seeing him tear it up at Canes 2 seasons ago when he played. I think unfortunately his style doesn't suit sitting inbetween Doak and inexperienced centres at the moment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,704 ✭✭✭Paul Smeenus

I wouldn't write him off - he's arrived at a time of massive upheaval and we haven't had any scintillating backs moves with anyone at ten this season. I suspect things will improve under Sextin next season, if he is indeed coming.

Jake Flannery is now our oldest outhalf at 25 - Morgan and Humphreys are 23, Murphy is 20. There's a hell of a lot of maturing and learning to be done amongst that bunch, as well as getting to grips with pressure in big games.

There'll be a lot of growing pains before whichever of them is capable of it comes good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 988 ✭✭✭Scythica

Yeah I agree. With a full strength backline I think Morgan will come good. Albeit the same could be said for the rest I suppose. Ultimately depends on what our attacking structure is going to be in the future.

With Augustus coming we will absolutely be getting front foot ball off set piece, although with our current backrow stocks it almost seems a slight luxury signing again. I suppose Izzy will primarily be lock. Hopefully we have 1 or 2 more big lads coming in for the tight 5. Oh for the likes of a Muller again..

Not a great start against Exeter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,129 ✭✭✭✭Clegg

    WTF was that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,129 ✭✭✭✭Clegg

Wilson looked like he was ruck inspecting rather than filling in at pillar.

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 8,544 ✭✭✭fitz

    Oh my, that's poor.

Ulster genuinely need to be studied, they have an amazing ability of making literally any side they play look good.

  • Administrators Posts: 54,764 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭awec

the two years out have really affected Lyttle. He is seriously slow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,129 ✭✭✭✭Clegg

That's excellent from Izuchukwu. Was that four carries in that period of possession before he went over for the try?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,505 ✭✭✭launish116

How we let Lyttle go should be a sackable offence in itself

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 8,544 ✭✭✭fitz

That's great grit from Ulster to quickly pull back the Exeter lead.

Exeter have won one game all season and tried to concede this game by sending their B team

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,129 ✭✭✭✭Clegg

Great from Timoney. Neither side can tackle or defend for their lives. Makes it entertaining I suppose.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,129 ✭✭✭✭Clegg

    Ah Lowry.

Kick it through or fall on it. Don't try and pick it up side on and one handed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,122 ✭✭✭Shehal

This has been impressive from Ulster…impressive as in they've managed to make the B side of the 2nd to last team in the premiership look competitive.

Honestly some of the mistakes Ulster have made are taking the p!ss level of territory at this stage…its like they have 3 options and still manage to pick the wrong one every time, lets be honest…who's surprised Lowry tried to pick up that ball and then knocked on? I almost expected it, which made it more funny.

Izuchukwu and Timoney head and shoulders above every other Ulster player tonight. Consistently making an impact. Not impressed by Wilson. When he gets a head of steam going he's hard to put down, but he has been plodding around the pitch mostly and looks unfit.

Lyttle looks more composed than any Ulster back on the pitch. Yeah he's experienced, but he hasn't played professionally in two years. Very impressive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,505 ✭✭✭launish116

Little harsh on Wilson, he played 60+ minutes in a game that has had minimal handling errors/scrums, high paced game for long peridos. Man of the Match

Izzy & Timoneys engines are unreal!

Postlewaite just makes ground also, both power and footwork.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,129 ✭✭✭✭Clegg

Wilson had a much better second half. Was involved in turnovers at rucks and carried hard. Thought he was dreadful in the first however.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,122 ✭✭✭Shehal

So with this margin it means if Bordeaux win by 29 points or more tomorrow Ulster are through, otherwise they go into the challenge cup.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,505 ✭✭✭launish116

Be better heading to the challenge cup

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,481 ✭✭✭Brief_Lives

    blahh

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,292 ✭✭✭letowski

With an attacking team like Bordeaux, that's very possible. But a game like that could be very loose, both teams could get TBPs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,382 ✭✭✭hold my beer

Did Wilson get man of the match

Interesting reading back the volume of posts when Ulster were struggling compared to when they were running in tries for fun! A winning Ulster doesn't sell newspapers or Internet forum posts it would seem!

Anyway, Ben Carson continues to surprise me. He has serious gas for a 13. Has he been the find of the season for us in that yes we knew about him but he has hit unexpected levels...to me anyway.

Izzy is probably our best player now. I know it wasn't a great Exeter team, but that some effort. He .ight just find himself in the Irish 23 for the 6Ns at this rate.

    Timoney was great as well.

Full back is a big problem now with McIlroy out long term. I think Lowry will just have to play there.

Moore is a modern Paddy Wallace, he gets shifted around too much. To me he is a centre and that's where he should play, but obviously there is a lot of competition there is Postlethwaite, Carson, McCloskey and Hume.

Yes, deservedly so IMO, not sure what Clegg was on about above.

Well I say deservedly so, but actually Izzy deserved it really.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,370 ✭✭✭Locke_Lamora

After that first half I found little joy in what happened after. Despite playing some good rugby and running in some nice scores I felt more or less indifferent about it all.

Izzy going from strength to strength right now, Munster fans are feeling aggrieved about Aherns absence from the Irish squad but Izzy deserves his place - I would drop Henderson before him. Would like to see him improving his defence next and stopping players on the gain line.

Slightly annoyed at Cooney getting in ahead of Jude, he’s growing into a very good player for us.

Wilson will have to bide his time but there aren’t a lot of quality tightheads knocking about on the island. Sure he has room to improve on the nuts and bolts of front row work but he’s having big impacts every game and his scrums are decent for such a young prop

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,505 ✭✭✭launish116

Postlewaite and Carson just look so natural together. Defensively they’re a great unit. Carson actually looks leaner than previous seasons.

Would love to see Postlewaites metres gained, and there not all crashball. He absolutely folded someone in first half also.

It will be a crime if Lyttle goes back to the farm in two weeks!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,914 ✭✭✭✭bilston

Well I suppose it depends on whether Stockdale and Baloucounce are nearly back. But to be honest he is probably the best winger in the squad after those two.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,704 ✭✭✭Paul Smeenus

Yeah, it's funny how the number of posters/frequency of posts falls markedly as the Schadenfreude melts away. Curious, that.

Agree with your other points. The Irish management seems obsessed with 6/8s. As much as I am delighted for McNabney and want to see him kick on, I really think Wilson has deserves a development player call-up to the Ireland squad ahead of him.

I also think our best 15 has Izzy at six and Sheridan in the second row.

Good to see Moore and Reid back. And surely Lyttle has to get another full-time contract.

Now, is it me or are our set pieces slowly improving? Scrum looks more solid - whereas earlier in the season I dreaded every one, now I am daring to hope for parity. Barrett has been a quietly efficient player in that regard.

Our lineouts has improved as well - especially our defensive effort. Against Connacht and Leicester Izzy stole a lineout each, if I recall.

Also, thought Hollie Davidson was excellent

Juarno Augustus showing up with some good carries for Northampton against Munster.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,505 ✭✭✭launish116

He's a right lump, next season gonna be hard deciding on a starting back row. Think the ballast would of been better in the row.

Sharks 0-12 up against Bordeaux after 8 minutes. Would expect them to still lose but I'd say that's Ulster's chances goosed.
