In this video, Inge talks about his road trip from Los Angeles to San Francisco, visiting Las Vegas, the Hoover Dam, the Grand Canyon, Page, Death Valley, the site of the album cover of U2's The Joshua Tree, Yosemite National Park and other interesting places along the way, all in a Tesla Model 3 that he rented on Turo.

He also gives advice about widfire season. You can find out more about current wildfires at www.fire.ca.gov. Thanks to Tesla Motors Club forum member SMAlset for bringing up this topic and providing useful information and a photo.

Why is there no carbon tax on EVs?

In respect of their construction and in the use of fossil fuels like gas etc to generate the electricity to charge them??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,094 ✭✭✭✭javaboy

You already pay carbon tax on the fuel used to generate the electricity.

In this video we take a day trip in a 24 kWh Nissan Leaf from Mallow to Newcastle West to cycle the Limerick greenway. How much of the battery does it take to drive 100 km?

Update 2021.40.6 includes a feature that many Tesla owners have been asking for for years. Waypoints! In this video, Inge explains how the Add stop feature works.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,029 ✭✭✭Sabre Man

In this video, we drive to Newcastle West from Mallow with an even lower state of charge at a colder temperature, which causes some range anxiety, or should that be range concern? Inge also talks about how long it takes to charge and how much it costs, including the total cost of this trip.

Maybe stupid question but does the 22/43 AC chargers on the ESB triple chargers disable the chademo and 50DC connections? If not, can the DC chargers send out full power?

Reason I ask is because I was up at the airport during the week and out of curiosity looked at the airport and Clonshaugh chargers on the eCars app. It looked like the slow AC charger was being used at both and the DC chargers were not available. Having said that, today there's a 2019 BMW hybrid parked the last 4 hours at the triple charger beside Glasnevin cemetery using the AC43. But the eCars app says the two DC chargers are available.

Seems like a crazy design if the slow charger can 'knock out' the fast chargers?

    I'm confused!

The AC does not disable the DC on those triples. If the DC was disabled there was from a different reason. However, there are some which are labelled "power constrained". These have no sufficient grid connection to sustain both AC and DC at full power. They also don't have hardware and software to do a sensible load balancing. They just split the available power in half.

What sort of mileage do you need to be doing to make an electric car viable?

That's not an easy question to answer, but if you can charge mostly at home, and especially if you can use a cheap night rate for electricity, then the more you drive the more you save compared to a petrol or diesel car.

Here's a video that attempts to answer your question.

In this video, Inge spends a long time in his Tesla Model S while drying clothes and wonders how long the battery would last if he was stuck in a traffic jam for hours and hours.

Apologies if posting in the wrong place and the search is diabolical.

Does anyone have information on how to get reduced tolls on the M50.

Eflow know that my car is electric and today I was told to apply for LEVTI on etoll.ie

Lot of information there but I can't see an application form.

Is it that the 50000 vehicle limit has been reached?

I don't think we got over 50k even if you count the PHEVs. There was no form when I joined just ask over the phone. It took me 3 calls to set me up in the first place. I think I read somewhere that it is due to end this year so hurry-up.

In our previous video, Simon reviewed the MG ZS EV. In this video, he goes for a long drive to see if he can get close to the claimed combined range of 440 km (WLTP).

As an EV owner for 4yrs I should probably know the answer to this question, but would it be better for the battery health to charge at 3.3kw versus 6.6 all the time?

I appreciate it's known that a lot of rapid charges hurt battery chemistry, but is there much difference between a couple of years charging at 3.3kw v 6.6kw, forgetting about 50kw etc?

I know than installing a proper home ev charger is the way to go as it is quicker but is using a granny charger more expensive?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,270 ✭✭✭loopymum

    I doubt it very much

Only way I can think of that would make it more expensive is charging outside of nightrate hours.

There are only 9 hours of nightrate so on average a granny cable charges at 2kw per hour so you will only be able to charge 18kw at night rate

The same amount of electricity will cost the same, irrespective of how fast you put it into your car.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 298 ✭✭eltoastero

i don't have anything to back this up, but I've always read that slower is better as heating the battery up too much can cause damage (but this discussion is usually comparing DC charging (50kW+) to AC charging (11kW or less)). Having said that, I suspect there's not much difference in terms of thermal load on the batteries between 3.6kW and 7.2kW (or whatever your car can pull at 16Amps/32Amps) so I don't plan on throttling my at home charging speeds to 3.6kW / 16Amps, but if you've time on your side (or a smaller battery to charge) then there's certainly no harm in charging at the slowest speed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,326 ✭✭✭✭KCross

I dont think it would make any difference.

Battery degradation occurs when the battery is overheated to temps like 40°C. You'll never get to that temp in Ireland regardless of 3.6kW or 6.6kW.

Here is one I can't find an answer to. I'm getting a second charger put in next week. Is it possible to also put in an outside 2 pin plug on the same line? So I could plug in a power washer for example?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 66,660 ✭✭✭✭unkel

No, no, no, no, no. In a modern EV, regular fast charging does not hurt the battery chemistry either and neither does charging your battery to 100% often as long as you don't keep it at that for a long time

Please stop perpetuating these false beliefs. All of the above has no material impact on the state of health of the battery or your range. Your car won't be worth significantly less after 10 years if you do all the above

Are there charge points in Killarney National Park? This question came up in a post from Thomas McGuire, who was unable to find a charge point near Muckross House that was listed on PlugShare.

According to PlugShare, there should be two charge points in the park, but if so, where are they? Inge decided to investigate and this is what he found.

3 pin plug I meant, can't edit it now. Still can't find any answer. Any time I Google it I just get results for charging via 3 pin. But I just want an outdoor socket so I can plug in a power washer.
