I feel the same way. I think what needs to happen that women will need to make sure they are not alone when jogging...sad this is the case but it feels like it is the only solution

An utterly awful act of violence.

I hope her family, friends, acquaintances and her very young schoolclass and all the schoolkids and colleagues at Durrow NS manage to get the strength needed at this time.

    God rest her. RIP.

A thing isn't what it says it is.

A thing is what it does.

Whatever way it transpired, it's just heartbreaking stuff for her loved ones, the poor girl.

I never understood the behaviour s in new York city when i moved there in the 80's . As an irish girl i saw people walk over other people on the street ignore altercations and generally in my eyes behave badly by not helping their fellow humans. That was 40 years ago now i hear a girl murdered for stepping into help someone and i fully understand the behaviour. New york was dangerous then and ireland is dangerous now. That poor child someones daughter educated and improving her community. God help her poor mother & father RIP.

Genuinely cannot wrap my head around this. An utterly senseless crime, inconceivable what her family are going through. 😓

How will her family ever come to terms with this loss. Completely mindless, incomprehensible.

    May he die screaming.

There are no words to describe this appalling act, it has numbed every one, I just can't imagine how her poor family are coping with it, an unbelievable thing to happen, really heartbreaking.

In my mind the punishment for this crime will not meet in my view justice 12/20 years is not enough i think the guilty must give to society how about a kidney make someone on deaths door a new lease on life I am just so angry now R I P .

they alerted the emergency services and stayed with her while she was dying and amongst all that they identified the perp, well done they will have PTSD for while its not something you can forget easily.

Words fail me on this one.

A beautiful young soul gone within the blink of an eye.

Those 2 ladies will be needing counselling for a long long time now and I commend them for their bravery.

I normally brush off news of murders sort of as part of life, ya here about them on the news every so often. This one has hit me hard for some reason though.

First they came for the socialists...

It's unbearable and so unfair to think how that poor woman's life ended. Such a senseless horrific end to a life. It's terribly terribly sad.

If there is an afterlife I hope she's there and at peace surrounded by those who loved her and passed before her. 😢

An absolutely heartbreaking situation for Ashling's family. May she rest in peace.

Terrible and shocking. Poor girl with her whole life in front of her, she likely never harmed anyone in her life and then ends up in the path of this monster. It reminds me of the Jastine Valdez case, another totally pointless killing at the hands of a deranged madman. What was done since then to prevent such random attack and killing?? Nothing. Not sure what can be done as there is no sense to either situation.

Thanks for the clip, she was a fine musician for sure, great ease in her playing. What a senseless waste of a life full of further promise and hope. RIP Aisling.

Your attitude comes from nowhere but love, care and concern. I can clearly see it.

Poor Girl, Poor family, and then you have people who found her and people who had see her body at the end of her life.

Some people will live with the scars of this for their whole lives.

    No words really.

I'm utterly appalled. This is a dark day for Ireland. This has shaken me to my core. RIP Aisling.

They reported this story on on Sky News

The reason this is shocking in particular is the time of day and the all round circumstances.

Most murders are committed at home and by someone known to the victim

A random attack, in a small town, at that time of the day is very uncommon and deeply disturbing.

I can't begin to imagine how grief stricken her family are.

Her dad was a well know musician, and Tullamore is a small town by any standard so it's going to be something the entire community is going to have deal with.

Shocking crime. What was his motivation? Just to kill or did the women who came across the attack disturb him from something else. I don’t know if they will ever find out. I feel for women who feel unsafe just going out and about in ordinary life. Is there a solution, sadly I don’t see one that will make a significant difference.

There is literally nothing that can be done to stop a random attack/killing unless someone designs a minority report style future crime predictor.

This is a horrific case, and i'm sure extremely traumatic for her family, friends and also for the community that she was from.

But can we please stop with the amateur dramatics? Women can't do this now, women can't do that now. It's absolute nonsense and i'm sure this young lady would not want over-hyped, tabloid style fear to be her legacy. This is by far the safest period ever to be a woman in the Western World. These attacks/murders are extremely, extremely rare, which is why they generate such publicity. There is no boogeyman around every corner waiting for women. Live your life. Don't be afraid to go jogging, wear headphones, go out etc. just be aware of your surroundings and be careful. The same advice also goes for men.

I’m starting to feel that way myself. A lot of the time when something like this happens I just feel so helpless.

My partner changed her walking/running routine about a year and a bit ago, after she had an uncomfortable encounter (she wasn’t harmed, thankfully) when out when it was a little darker. Naturally she hears something like this and believes that the random attack, as rare as they are, could happen to anyone in broad daylight.

She was very rattled by this last night. And you feel sh*t because there is nothing you can do to stop this happening even if she takes all of the right approaches.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 58,620 ✭✭✭✭walshb

Yes. This death is very unlike other murders. I cannot recall similar. Time of day, victim and perpetrator not known to each other.

So desperately sad for any parents/family to lose a child, but like this does not bear thinking about.

There are some vigils being held for her tomorrow, at 4pm. The time she was attacked.

It's a very difficult situation right now, so I'm not going to comment on the crime itsself. I'd gone to bed early yesterday, after being up early. So only heard about the crime this morning.

Also heard about two teens being stabbed in Blanchardstown. My sympathies go out to their loved ones too. Just hoping they make a swift recovery.

It's absolutely horrible to think she'd (unknowingly) celebrated her last Christmas. Just horrible. Sincerest condolences to her family, friends, and loved ones.
