16% Beef Nut in 25kg bag @ €280 ton. I would have thought bulk would be a good bit cheaper.

That rise was being talked about before the fire, i suppose the fire will put on another €15 also.
Then €10 cause Brexit, another tenner cause Covid and another tenner towards a new merc for the sales manager at the mill.

€280 per tonne bags, 16% nut.

€265 for 15% crunch collected in December. Price has probably gone up since then.

Unless you are feeding weanlings or finishing cattle it is no longer economical to feed ration to cattle. With present beef prices and ration prices finishing is a loss making business. Strong weanlings over 300kgs should not require ration either unless silage is pure crap. Silage and minerals is adequate for all cattle over 300kgs.

If you are buying a ration at sub 250/ton in bulk it's very unlikely to have decent ingredients. Milks may have reduced bagged pric s as much as possible as bagging plants are well paid for now. However again it unlikely you are getting anything decent in a bag.

Paid 8:50 per bag delivered from dairygold for maize munch, usually get bulk but didn't suit this time

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,349 ✭✭✭✭Base price

€200/ton for rolled barley and oats in bulk bags collected which is up €10/ton on December price. Ground maize €225/ton bulk bags collected and they held the price of the 15% crunch at €265/ton. Payment on collection.

There is no value out there bought Barley/ maize/ hulls for finishing bullocks on grass at 255/ ton. Minimum to be taken was 4 ton.

Ya was told it's going up as well. That mix was costing 200/ ton 4-5 years ago. I be splitting my calves at that price. I definitely be setting up a grazing system with a back fence. See a lad and he has the younger calves ahead of the older ones. There is about 10 young calves and 40 older ones.

If calves are 16 weeks+ and have plenty of grass in a strip grazing set up I be tempted to give them grass only. Even at over 14 weeks I be trying to feed them a good quality 14% beef ration instead of a calf ration

It won’t be at 255 for long with maize after breaking 7 dollars a bushel, meal prices are going to be scary high next autumn/winter looking at future markets

Glanbias gain wean and build 16% protein is retailing at €365 loose collected.

At them prices lads should concentrate on making descent late May silage and feed no ration to weanlings or stores. It's not economical. 2 kgs/ day, that is 65-75 euro for 100 days.

Rep rang yesterday to tell me ration going up €15 and nuts €20 next week. With regards to some of the fancy named product, you should check the ingredients as some of them put more effort into dressing up there products instead of using the best of ingredients

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,374 ✭✭✭Dunedin

I give 1kg to weanlings from November to February (120 days). Works out €38 a head. Works for my set up.

depends on type of cattle to. Big difference in feeding to U/R grade continental cattle versus and O or P grade.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 606 ✭✭✭Fine Day

Agreed. Good to give weanling a kg of good ration per day along with good silage. I find there all the better for it and trive better when they get to grass. Also has minerals etc that is important too.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,374 ✭✭✭Dunedin

I have an area cordoned off outside the shed with three troughs to let them out. The meal makes them fierce quiet also - like suck calves which makes handling them later on very easy.

10th May is my first cut silage date weather permitting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 606 ✭✭✭Fine Day

See what way the spring comes before we think about cutting silage. Fertilizer cost will be a big factor this year. Alot lads may graze first with hope of prices dropping later in the spring or early summer.

    €280 for a 12% finishing ration and €300 for a 16% nut.

Anything going back to grass is getting good first cut silage and no meal and doing good on it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,374 ✭✭✭Dunedin

    Don’t think it’ll be 10 May this year 😞😞

40 percent maize ration blown into meal bin gone up from 250 a ton to 307 a ton

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 606 ✭✭✭Fine Day

Big jump. Beef prices better hover around €4.50/kgs. If not we can called it a day😰.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,642 ✭✭✭Cavanjack

I’ll happy pay the €50 extra a tonne if cattle keep killing €300 + more than this time last year.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,374 ✭✭✭Dunedin

That’s the thing alright but pity the meal, fert , fuel increases are swallowing up the rise in cattle prices.

Same here. 1kg/day each. Makes a huge difference to them & makes them quieten & used to the system here. I can handle & rub them in the pin now. I aim to calve the best at ~24mths so good 16% crunch important

If your silage was cut then feeding meal for s a waste of money and time. Get some molasses and bagged mins and feed it in the troughs and walk around for that matter have them outside and walk around it will do the same thing.

It the minerals that are Important not the ration. I feed minerals on top of silage here. It's actually getting harder to get bagged minerals off merchants. Some want to only sell the molassed mins in buckets which are a waste of time.

I feed mins, salt and calcium flour( cubicle line) to stores.

At them prices I would be checking what in the ration because it way out of kilter with what I am hearing. Now I am not feeding but those prices are 30+ less than I be expecting for decent ration.

It 300 compared to 2019/20. But 4-5 years ago rations were 220-240/ ton and base prices were 4-4.2. I be sticking to finishing off grass. At those costs you need the margin on the animal before you start feeding. If you exclude the year where they dropped them to 3.5/ kg we are only 40-50c/ kg above even the lowish prices of last year on average that is 140-175 euro on a 350 kg carcase. It was summer cattle off grass that have left money over the last two years

I be more afraid of processor's cutting around the edges, on weights and on aged cattle. Weight would be the big fear. There was talk of a 420 kg limit 2 years ago. It could happen again

a few years ago I had 5 weanlings in a shed that it just wasn’t feasible to give nuts to. The rest of the weanlings got 1kg - all got the same silage and the difference was unreal for the ones that got the nuts over the others.

it was an eye opener for me and I’ll be sticking with my 1kg however a waste of my time and money it might be.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,966 ✭✭✭✭Bass Reeves

It probably more down to minerals than the nuts. As well research by Teagasc has shown that by the following autumn the cattle not fed nuts will have made up the difference where good silage and minerals are fed.

Adequate minerals are worth a few kgs of ration by themselves. Lad get caught up on how cattle look leaving a shed not by how they look 6-8 months later. I have seen cattle who preformed badly in a shed outperform cattle are are hotish out of the shed.

10 years ago a lot of farmers were feeding ration to stores over the winter. Very few lad with decent silage do it not with stores going to grass any longer.

Compensatory growth is one of the biggest factors in profitability of fsrms

Not to be too argumentative on the point, I’ll admit that minerals is something that I’ve not explored too much as I’ve had great reactions to the 1kg nuts so I’ve not changed

fully agree re the compensatory growth bit and the hot cattle leaving the shed - they melt when let out. All nuts stopped min one month before turnout too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,966 ✭✭✭✭Bass Reeves

If you are giving a kg of nuts the cattle are getting about 1/3 to 1/2 of there actual requirements. I used to top up to the right mins years ago. Now I just use the mins admittedly on stores only.

Good quality silage like you are feeling could be very deficient mins. Calcium in the form of limestone flour and salt helps as well. However you need to adjust for the minimal amount they put in most bagged mins.

Hear talk of meal rising another €20. Where will it stop. Finished cattle will be scarce come April/may at this rate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,261 ✭✭✭Grueller

Traditional breed forward stores fit to be finished from grass will be some trade in March and April.

If ya can get meal. Ordered a pallet of meal from a company 2 weeks ago and still no sign

Beef Finisher Nut bulk Ton bag 360, weanling nut 385 also ton bag... South West Cork. Heading for 400 ton weanling nut shortly but nuts are needed and do pay. Yes will be cutting the weanlings nut back heavily in months time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,966 ✭✭✭✭Bass Reeves

Cattle off grass again will leave money. With the price of ration there will be no cattle rushing off grass in May/ June either. At present ration prices you would want a 40-80c/kg difference between grass and shed.

I didn't think there was a shortage of meal? Maybe try another company.......
