A South African doctor on radio 1 now saying it’s a mild thing at the minute but dobbo is having none of it.taken aback when she says it will be the same all over the world but again dobbo doesn’t want to know.shameful stuff from our so called media

I think this whole thing has really taught us where our limits are and how negatively some people react to having those limits tested. It is horribly stressful and very frustrating for sure at times. In normal times we could have got to 90 without ever learning where such limits are.

I really don't think you can do anything about family, they're dealing with this like you even if some more unpleasant elements of their personality have emerged in it. All you can do is just work out what your attitude to all of this is and leave them to it. TBH I’d just ban any COVID conversations and be very firm in stating you have no interest in being involved in one.

Christmas can be tough for people anyway so it is a matter of just getting through those days. I'd echo the suggestion from others, to get away if you can, as soon as you can. Soon enough you'll be able to enjoy Christmas through the eyes of your toddler. Be safe and kind to yourself.

Definitely not alone anyway, that's the first thing.

I'm surprised we're still locking down so hard despite the evidence that vaccines are largely holding up in terms of hospitalizations.

Interms of how to cope mentally, different for every person, maybe try talk with friends? As alot of people are finding this hard, yes, some harder than others.

Try think positively too, like the days will be getting longer, more treatments are available (covid pill, gsk's antibody treatment, vaccines etc.).

Ultimately, I think there's going to be a tsunami of mental health issues after this so maybe its a case of you need to talk to a councillor or a gp. Either way, there are alot of people struggling and don't dismiss your problems as being "just first world problems"

And as other posters have said turn off the news etc. There's nothing positive they have to say (Something I look at too much 🤦‍♂️)

I have no doubt that we'll see lockdowns or restrictions in the future. Probably everytime there is a new variant we'll implement them. Possibly in winter when hospitals are busy.

Sure we even close schools now when we have amber weather warnings as there could be a small chance that it might turn red.

I reckon we'll need a big economic crash to come back to normality.

Just listening to that aswell that Dr didn’t get the memo 😂😂😂 all joking aside seemed to really be playing it down no extra restrictions, peak over, no mad hospital increases all very positive

I heard that too. It was hilarious! No matter how hard Dobbo tried to get the answers he wanted (i.e. that Omicron is a serious threat), she wasn't playing ball with him. In fact you could hear how impatient she got with him towards the end when he started to ask her the same questions again.

Yeah . The data is there from SA . It's hard to know what's going on .

Again as said above Bryan Dobson having none of what the South African doctor was saying how mild this is.

Covid advertising pays these guys wages they want it to continue

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 933 ✭✭✭robfowler78

If it does turn out or be milder that’s a good thing won’t help us to lift restrictions before end Feb as i still believe the main reason is to cover the HSE inadequate qualities regardless of data. It will take that lent of time to “read and examine the data”. But I’d be confident we will have a better summer this year

One would like to think if this is the case then all restrictions will be lifted indefinitely asap. Including mask wearing and the need to produce your papers for having a pint etc. I don't think that will happen though. I think we will be facing in to the next 3-4 months of snake oils makey uppy models.

Caitriona Perry did the same thing on the news last week . Pushing and pushing MM to close schools . He was having none of her either

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 628 ✭✭✭Ozvaldo

Whats that could to do with the point abt the variant being milder and Dobson ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 933 ✭✭✭robfowler78

I think it’s becoming clear that some countries are using their restrictions as a last resort. It will be interesting to see how quickly the Uk go back to full open and lift restrictions. I think we will have much less restrictions after paddy’s day this year. And hopefully less doom and gloom for the summer and get rid of daily update and numbers

Yep.. she framed the question as: 'so why won't you close the schools?' instead of 'what's your reasoning for keeping the schools open?' People underestimate how powerful the national media including RTE are in forming attitudes and opinions in the general public.

We are years away from this ending. People need to harden up and realise this is the new normal for the next while.

Mod - some posts can get pretty close to the 'No medical advice' line and one (now deleted) has just crossed it, resulting in the poster being on a short time out from the forum.

A reminder of the site wide rule, no medical advice

The schools are been kept open for one reason and one reason only if they close then a lot of essential services will have problems with child care. If the kids are all at home the most two income family’s have a problem

For a short period we will probably find that the “huge” case number will rule once again, just until we can see whether they do actually turn into hospitalizations in big numbers. From our perspective it's hard to see when what would happen. Even if we had new case records next week and it fell just as fast, the end of January is the earliest we're going to see anybody looking at changing restrictions.

    Thats the problem. "Eventually".

COVID has probably removed my ability to ever have a family. I moved home-home, in with the parents on a temporary basis in late 2019. Then Covid happened and I couldn't leave them then to move in with a (now) ex. I knew I would not be able to see them. That relationship ended for other reasons anyway. Now one parent is quite ill and the other is deteriorating.

I am 38, pushing 39. I can't leave the parents, they need care and I have no brothers/sisters/relatives. None of my grandparents ever went into a nursing home, so my parents assume I'll look after them. There is already a huge creep in the amount of work I need to do to keep things going.

COVID means I can't date without risking bringing it home to them. They are massively paranoid about it. There is little to no dating going on in my age group. Even a gig I wanted to go to in London after Christmas - gone due to Omicron and the hysteria around it.

Had I been living with someone before all this started I'd likely have a family now.. I'm going to be too old by the time it ends, and more importantly by the time NPHET and the Irish Government back down.

So there was a backlog Saturday even though Fergal Bowers got confirmation there wasn't

That's what we were saying this time last year. Ego comes into on our side though. I get the impression Tony doesn't like being over ruled or doesn't like his instructions not being followed. Omicron and Covid shouldn't be leading to these types of restrictions and impending lockdowns anymore based on what we know and the data we have available from the last 20 months. Yet here we are. Another over reaction.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 933 ✭✭✭robfowler78

Yep I think it will roll on to the end of Feb maybe if we lockdown next week or so we will roll back to we’re we are now for End of feb/ march and then possibly another cancelled paddy’s day. But April onwards will be much more open.

Eh the point is that journalists on Rte are pushing people to say what they want to hear .

Whats funny is Scare Byrne was doing the same with hospitality for a few weeks now. The minute it is locked down she is all concerned about the workers. Parasites the lot of them.

I rang the HSE helpline this morning with a complicated query . Credit where its due the man couldn’t have been more helpful and got it sorted .

    Sometimes we get lucky !!

The schools will be closed in January and this will be used as a push to vaccinate the 5yr to 11yr cohort. Watch how this gets framed over the next fortnight. MM will be on the podium again come December 30th to announce school closures.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 933 ✭✭✭robfowler78

I don’t think it’s anything more sinister then we don’t have a fit for purpose health service along with a highly transmissible virus. We pinned our hopes to vaccines which although work haven’t worked in the way they thought and this is dragging into a year 3. Leo said himself he thought 2yrs would be it. So when your only other weapon is lockdown your kind of fecked. So they have so do this were as the UK and other countries health services are able to deal with higher hospital numbers and can stay open longer.

The EMA have approved the Novavax vaccine for use.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 933 ✭✭✭robfowler78

You could be right they will push hard for the kids to be vaccinated before the summer when cases will start to drop with the warmer weather. Parents won’t be as quick to get them vaccinated unless they want to go on holidays and it’s required.

But I still think they don’t want to close the schools because of the knock on effect of child minding for the essential services.

Yes, it was actually starting to get a bit embarrassing by the end. She was starting to lose her patience with his line of biased questioning by the end.
