Just finished the show last night, and I really did enjoy it. As a book reader, I found some of the changes to be odd. Mostly harmless in terms of the plot, but still off.

Killing off Eskel. It seems really strange to me that they'd add/invent a bunch of new Witchers in Kaer Morhen, but then go away and kill one of the actual Witchers.

    Another strange one was definitely

How they use Vesemir. Never would Vesemir endanger Ciri in any way, and certainly wouldn't take the risk of stabbing her.

With that said, I much preferred the costume design this time around, Yennefer was far far better this season, possibly because there was less screaming or more likely because Anya Chalotra is more comfortable in the role.

A bit of a mixed bag this season. The first half of it was more enjoyable and engaging than the second half, but it's still pretty solid overall, especially in the acting department, but with one glaringly bad performance by the actress portraying Francesca Findabair. I think I enjoyed the first season a little bit more than this one, though.

I still haven't warmed to most of the castings other than Henry Caville if I'm being honest

I think Joey Batey is doing a great job as Jaskier/Dandelion honestly. Freya Allen is certainly growing in the role of Ciri.

Cavill is doing a great job not only because he's a great actor, but also because he is a massive, massive fan of the books.

I do have a bad feeling that Netflix will cancel the series though, and it's on them for that. The only real negative things I'm seeing about the show is the veering off from the established story.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,816 ✭✭✭Relikk

About cancellation, I got that impression when I read that they were giving Cavill a million an episode. It immediately felt like they want it to fail or be enough of a financial burden so they have an excuse to cancel it. Very odd.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,254 ✭✭✭The White Wolf

I don't think there's a hope in hell they're cancelling this, it would be mental. A tight 8 episode series that is being watched is exactly what they need more of.

People are watching this, make no mistake.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

That's quite the reach, that Netflix are paying more for Cavill cos they want to cancel the show? That makes nose sense. If Netflix want to cancel a show, they cancel it quicksmart and have had no problem cutting all sorts; be they big or small budget. And as White Wolf says, The Witcher is a huge hit for them. Not without reason there's at least one spin off on the way

Caught the first episode and yeah, that landed much better than the shaggier, messier first season already. This show is so aggressively crude, violent and melodramatic and it's a great watch because of it. It nails that sense of European folklore as this bloody, lustful and macabre thing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,816 ✭✭✭Relikk

Of course people are watching it. They even said so themselves. That doesn't stop them from cancelling some fan favourite shows, though. And of course it's a reach, it's an impression I got reading the article as I found it to be quite a lot of money to be paying an actor, per episode, on a streaming platform production, along with every other expense. It's kind of unheard of.

There already releasing a prequel next year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,063 ✭✭✭BKtje

Unheard of? Each episode of friends in later seasons cost 1 million per actor. Each episode of friends took a fraction of the time to film. No complicated makeup, no learning fight scenes, styles or staying in shape.

I would hazard an 8 episode season takes as long as feature movies to make. How much does he make for his box office films? More than 8 million I'd guess.

I'm not saying that it's not a huge amount but i don't think it's as much as it's being made out to be.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,816 ✭✭✭Relikk

I specifically said streaming platform production, no mention of network television in there at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,253 ✭✭✭Sonics2k

Eh, of all the reasons Netflix would have to cancel a show I doubt the amount they're paying Cavill is of real concern. A million an episode for them is very low when you take in the amount that Netflix is worth. 1 million an episode is also not unheard of, there's a great interview with Jason Alexander out of Seinfield talking about getting paid insane amounts of money way back in the 90's, Charlie Sheen was earning just shy of 2 million an episode on Two and a Half Men.

Netflix have a long, long history of seemingly 'randomly' cancelling shows and rarely offer up an actual reason for doing so, quite often even to the cast of the show.

I felt this season had a lot less action, but I did thoroughly enjoy the first fight the dwarves were in, really well executed (pun intended). I'm gonna have to go back and binge the 2 seasons back to back, I feel like I forgot a lot of the first season.

TBH it just reads like conspiracy; or trying to find the cloud in the silver lining 🙂 Netflix are easy going throwing around the cash (see Red Notice and that casts paycheques) but this segue that it's Machiavellian strategy for cancellation is a bit weird, and unfounded beyond "TV service might cancel show". Yeah. They might, but there are no indications at all they will, for a noted hit (such that Netflix feel confident to commission 2 spinoffs already). Season 1 was a huge well-liked success, viral song n all. This isn't Cowboy Bebop, Jupiter Legacy or Teenage Bounty Hunters. And if you wanna cut a show, you don't plough more money into it for an excuse to do so.

I'm sure one day Netflix will announce season X will be the last, so I guess you can be right then, under the Stopped Clocks Rule 😁

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,063 ✭✭✭BKtje

True you didn't but Netflix is not a simple streaming platform (neither is Disney+ in that regard). I think they have more in common with the large film companies in how they create content and would feel that they are in direct competition with them in many aspects. In any cases they are employing movie stars and thus need to pay them accordingly.

I've definitely warmed to the castings as it went on. I just default to the characters I know from the Witcher 3 and it's jarring at first seeing them differently. Dijkstra was well cast though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,816 ✭✭✭Relikk

It was fun hearing his name mentioned earlier in the episode, then when you saw who the actor was you immediately knew it was going to be Dijkstra. A good choice, indeed.

Im really enjoying this season. About half way through now.

Overall i enjoyed the first season too, but all the jumping around in time really wrecked my head. Other half couldnt handle that and stopped watching half way through season one. I think if it had started doing that in season 2 i might have just given up.

My brother hates Jaskier, I think Batey is doing great.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Oh yeah forgot about that; that made Season 1 more heavy-going than it ever should have. Did the producers/writers ever give a reason for it? Always seemed a bit arbitrary and without much of a payoff or point... have seen SEason 2 dropped that structure and is basically more serialised.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,673 ✭✭✭✭fritzelly

Producer/writer said it was the only way to get all the characters stories out in the first season but had listened to fans complaints ahead of S2 but it was damn confusing for the likes of me who havent read the books, played the games etc

The bartender's comment on Jaskier's song was pretty meta

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,253 ✭✭✭Sonics2k

Even as a pretty big fan of the books and games I was so confused in Series 1 about the timeline

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,283 ✭✭✭✭Potential-Monke

I prefer him to the game one! Mostly because he's not making me do pointless boring quests.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,235 ✭✭✭✭Penn

The point about Cavill being paid 1m per episode is kinda redundant, because no chance anyone else in the cast is getting near that so that's going to balance things out anyway.

Much better season than the first. Still flawed in some respects, but much easier to follow and actually having Geralt and Ciri together made a huge difference. The actress playing Ciri put in a great performance too.

They definitely took a lot of the criticisms of Season 1 on board too. Changed all the Nilfgaardian armour especially.

The actress who played Ciri's grandmother though, in the final episode not even was she clearly not in the same room as everyone else, I'm not even sure she was in the same country. They showed the back of her head more than the front.

I found jaskier a bit annoying in season , really worked in season 2 ....

First season was quite rough around the edges in places but felt distinctive and had its own style. So far (two episodes left) this season feels a little bland in comparison. There's clearly been some changes behind the scenes. Music isn't as good, direction isn't as good and some characters seem to have changed personality. There's also a shift away from the main 3 and onto previously minor characters/actors and feels like them trying to be GOT. Some aspects are improved and I am liking the story but overall I am a bit disappointed so far.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,276 ✭✭✭readyletsgo

I dropped off by episode 5 of S2. Just hasnt grabbing me like S1 did.

I hear that Netflix looks at the amount of episodes people watch, not the overall viewings. I dont think it will be cancelled, but S3 might be a tough sell (for me anyway).

    anyway.. back to the show..

    2.7: AWE ****!

Ah I hope they're not gonna kill Ciri off because of Demon possession or something.

She's really grown on me in this season!

    Dammit!

Well done the writers.. I didn't see that coming.

    Honourable mention for Jaskier

"I'm so sad and complicated" 😂😁

and damn that scene with the

Nilgaard solidiers.. generals? getting done-in by Fringilla! 😲

Finished Season 2! Top notch second season! Built on the first! Had action, adventure, magic, exploration, everything!

    What an ending! 😲

    2.8: NO FREAKIN WAY!

I can't believe it's Ciris Dad! Wow! What a cliffhanger.. Straight outta leftfield! Didn't see it coming in the slightest! 😲

    Anyway..

Phew! Glad Ciri wasn't killed... Though.. I'm guessing she's not gonna be a Witcher now.. like maybe something more but I'd been building myself up to her becoming a Witcher. The show creators did such a good job with those training episodes!

I liked Yennefer getting some redemption. Her working for the baddie felt very entrapmentey and forced.

Jaskier seemed to get the worst of it from the core team reputation this season.

Though the Witchers.. between this and Nightmare of the Wolf.. the Witchers legit got it the worst.. though again.. Nightmare of the Wolf really kinda showed them bringing a lot of their misfortune onto themselves.

One kinda Marvel/MCU remindery thing was when

Ciri was watching her dream/illusion fade away.. it felt like The Snap in how she was losing her loved ones. I think the writers/cast/direction/set/etc team did this really well. It definitely had some big feels in it. Well done on that cos like.. there was easily a chance it could've been seen as just a bit of a copy. While here it felt like they really put enough effort in to have some impact on the viewer.

Future: Season 3! I'm in! The other show with Michelle Yeoh, I'm in!

Witcher Team is on point for building their universe!

Can I just say that as a long time fan of the Witcher series, it's great to see these little reviews from Slydice. Someone coming into it completely fresh and just enjoying the show and leaving their thoughts on it and predictions.

Just finsihed the second season now. Never played the games. Enjoyed Season 1 but had had enough with the time jumps.

    Thought season 2 was excellent.

    Jaskier was excellent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,253 ✭✭✭Sonics2k

I really don't think Joey Batey/Jaskier is getting the credit he deserves for his portrayal and acting in S2. I absolutely love him and even his facial expressions in episodes describe so much

Am I correct that Nightmare of the Wolf is a prequel?

Is it set before Geralt’s time?

Also I need a reminder - does a Witcher age like a normal human? How old is Yrnnfer in season 1 ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

Yes, it's a prequel. Particularly when the ending has

the bunch of kids. The one without hair is Geralt

No, witchers like Geralt live longer.

Also, mages (not witchers) like Yennefer live longer.

Not sure how much longer in each case.

Flicked this on over Christmas with no prior knowledge or expectations. Flew through both seasons and have loved it so far!

Garbage. It felt like I was watching a bad Dr Who episode of the Whitaker era.

The dialogue and interactions between characters is banality to the point of sleep inducing. Acting for the most part is drama school level.

Scenes chop and change like it was Eastenders. No build-up to any of the plot developments. Zero character development.

The elves are annoying and boring. Yennifer is mostly nerdy and boring. Frangilla is a terrible character and an eye sore to look at. Geralt barely has a personality this season.

Frankie from Pusher who plays Vessimir is hands down the best actor in the show so its a shame his screen time totals about 25mins out of 8 hours.

Episodes were also way to long. The story could have easily been told in just half the time.

When the cut scenes in the game are better directed and contain far better writing and acting , then the showrunners have a problem.

Disappointment seems to be the general consensus for Season 2. Season 3 will have to be a step up in quality or it may be all over. Its highly likely they threw money away on that Blood Origins show

    From the start 🙃

Sword of Destiny and The Last Wish are collections of short stories in the Witcher universe which are kind of a lead up to the events of the main story much like S1 of the show. Blood of elves is the first part of the Witcher saga and covers much of Season 2 but there are some differences and potentially spoilers in blood of elves that haven't been covered yet in the show.

The book order is listed on wikipedia.

Really liked the season only familiar with the games but was somewhat confused by the overall plot. Only weakness was the Triss, they seem to not know what to do with the character. Someone above was saying season 2 was not liked- I cant see why, was a step up on one for me.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,566 ✭✭✭Need a Username

I started season 2 last night.

    This show is great.

The episode had a proper old fashioned fairy tale feel to it. The writers and the actor did such a great job on Nevellin’s character that when the truth about the curse was revealed it felt like getting kicked by a horse.

I know the chronological order of the story from season 1 but I have a question about the when of things.

Geralt and Jaskar were in Cintra for the wedding of Ciri’s parents which was 16/17 (??) years ago. As best I can recall Geralt last saw Yennifer and parted ways with Jaskar after the dragon hunt - how long ago was that?

Do Mages age slower than humans or do they not age at all?

And what about Witchers? Is Geralt aging slower?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 22,407 CMod ✭✭✭✭Pawwed Rig

Mages age slower. At one stage Yennifer said she had already been at court for 30 years.

The time lines in season 1 are fairly confusing alright

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,555 ✭✭✭Ave Sodalis

Mages age much slower that humans by a few hundreds years, but I don't believe they're immortal. Witchers also age slower, but their lifespan is unknown because non of them ever died a natural death.
