I just booked a car for a week in Fuerteventura and this was the first time there wasn't a significant difference for automatic. I'll happily drive a manual but they were much the same this time.

Also because I left it so late I got fleeced regardless. €450 for a week...

It's not really a normal time so you won't see that difference now, many of the companies sold cars to stay afloat during the pandemic, major issues everywhere with availability.

Pre Pandemic (I rented maybe 30-40 times a year) you could pay 7-9 euros a day.

These days its more like 40-50, also your comparison isn't really clear, the manual for 893 is a different company with different conditions compared to the automatic for 1085 e.g. if its Buchbinder or one of the other budget brands add on a fee for Crossing a border, Sixt you don't have that fee for example, or a daily kilometer allowance and so on.

But for sure you always pay a penalty for booking an automatic, I'd say 9 out of 10 times I've gotten an automatic when booking a manual, with Sixt the most common for giving a free upgrade (although they were never really super cheap anyway)

Having both options gives you maximum flexibility, I'd usually take the option depending on the overall cost, e.g. The budget brands become expensive if you want to head to Switzerland or Austria (cross border fee) Some of the premium ones will even sort you out with a car that already has a sticker if you ask nicely ;)

I don't know how we got here arguing about rental costs on a bargain thread but my point is that they are not that far apart. Prices include cross border and one child seat. And probably I said before based on beepbeep, in Ireland in 2021 so far automatics account for 48.6% compared to 10.4% in 2011. That is very close to half and I bet next year they will be overpass the stick. Pricewise automatics as new are not that expensive anymore when compared to manuals and this is reflected on the rentals as well. Automatic transmission is more reliable when you have a spread of drivers.

Anyway looking forward to rent an electric and have my profile sync with the rental ;)

If this ever gets released in right-hand drive , especially if it's 13 or so thousand it'll be a bombshell ...

Yep, needs to be cheap though but a perfect second car for many families, will cost near zero to run and maintain and if it is cheap enough (after subsidy), it will have glacial depreciation as there simply is nothing else like it

Also perfect car for city folk and learner drivers / young professionals, as insurance should be cheaper than any other car on the road today

If it's 13k in europe given our 23% VAT its likely to be closer to 16-17 here

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,134 ✭✭✭Markcheese

I think they were saying it was 17 / 18 k euro in france - knock off the subsidies of about 5 k brings you to somewhere around 13 k -

Probably would be dearer here anyway if only cos they'd have to do a right hand drive for just us and the uk , ( the petrol right hand version already exists in India ) .. and Dacia isn't huge over the water ...

Long shot I know but said I'd put this here in case any boardies were on the lookout for an EV.

I'll be trading my Leaf in over the coming days and looking for a modest amount of €8000

Black Nissan Leaf 2014 (142) Tekna SVE

    87,000 klm

1 bar down and guessometer shows approx 120 klm of range when 100% charged.

    3.3 kwh Chedamo Charger

    17" Alloys

Heated leather seats and steering wheel

    Bose sound system

    Type 2 public charge cable

    Very good condition throughout

The subsidy here is a lot less than €5k if the car's price is below €20k. Iirc there is (almost) no subsidy if the price is below €15k

Which is nasty, I feel the subsidy should be a fixed amount, no matter how much the price of the car is. Like in the USA, where you get the full federal $7.5k tax credit no matter how cheap the EV is

This is a great incentive for manufacturers to sell cheap EVs, people will buy them by the sh1tloads. Also a great incentive for relatively poor people to buy a brand new car

Could something like this have the unfortunate side effect of putting a load more cars on the road ? 150 or so a month and half the students In the country aren't taking the bus -( especially if mam and dad are paying the electric bill ) they're joining rush hour traffic and looking for parking ..

The biggest cost for students getting to/from college isn't the price of the car itself, it's the price of the insurance so no I wouldn't think so

And for the first time in a very long time......we have an EV bargain!

    Tesla Model S 85D asking €35k

Auto Pilot, new tyres, long NCT, private sale, open to offers. Someone in here quickly make this chap a €32k offer please and secure themselves the EV bargain of 2021!!!

Beware it is a 4 seat car only though. Do not buy if you're a family of 5.

Just literally came here to post that Unkel.

Assuming it still has free SuC aswell it meets all the criteria except the silly rear seat setup means you lose the 5th seat and ability to fold down the rear seats.

Nice spec otherwise, air suspension even. No CCS or chademo adapter seen though, the wheels are different to the ones on the screen , probably still on MCU1, and the brake discs look rusty. I'd say there's a couple of k to be spent on her to make her just right. Wouldnt bother most but would bother me!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,812 ✭✭✭✭unkel

CCS €299 - if it has 23kW AC charging, this is not really necessary for Ireland

Front brakes €450 - NCT is nearly brand new, so this might not be needed for a while

Free supercharging - worth less than €100 per year for many owners in this country

But yeah, I would use all three as cons when negotiating the sale with the current owner, plus of course that awful 4 seat setup 🤣

Lads. What is there to look out for on this car? I am presuming there is no warranty?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,812 ✭✭✭✭unkel

Still battery and drivetrain warranty until sometime in 2023. That's your major worries sorted. Next most common thing is the MCU (computer), this is now mostly fixed for free even outside warranty. Then the door handles, these are now fixed with free labour, even out of warranty but the parts are still expensive

If everything works and the car is ok mechanically, I would not hesitate to buy. This car is probably the best EV bargain of 2021 if you can get it for around €32-33k

Agree with all the above but the 4 seat really removes a lot of practicality. Make sure you know what you're buying.

And another bargain. 2016 Zoe for about €8k, battery owned. Need to get proof of that obviously.

Is that the model that got the Zero crash rating or am I dreaming that from somewhere. Great for tipping around though and looks well looked after

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,252 ✭✭✭loopymum

What kind of range would you get on that Zoe?

I have a friend looking for an ev. 112km round trip on national roads, no work charging

    85bhp

    wouldn't pull your forey back.

Picture of the dash says 112km range, though it looks like it's not fully charged. 22kWh battery wouldn't get you much more than that to be honest. Higher speeds would kill the range on that Zoe. 112km round trip I assume at least a decent portion is at high speed.

Forget about it on a bad day in winter (even if driving miss Daisy). Ioniq time for your friend!

Thanks, it's a pity she doesn't have work charging, I don't thing a 1.5 gen would do it easily either, ioniqs are pricey at the moment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,139 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Unfortunately Ioniq time would be twice the money, probably means it would not be a bargain buy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,252 ✭✭✭loopymum

How much are Ioniqs going for these days? All asking high prices on donedeal at the moment and not too many of them
