I had a similar issue with my vw and yes it's a special plug needed. Pain I the hoop tbh

Hopefully plug and charge for Ionity will be part of 3.0, it's already implemented by Ionity albeit for a very limited number of cars.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,614 ✭✭✭eagerv

Hope you got the charge for free, normally if you have to call them they don't charge.. (Saw similar with an iPace last week)

That would be cool, how would the charger recognise the car though for billing ?

We need a lot more Ionity chargers. Even if it costs 79 C/Kwh it was a pleasure pulling up today, 2 cars charging and then I plugged in and still one space free. Looked for charge in Galway yesterday and the 2 chargers were busy with queues.

I never checked, I will later though. I would have stayed past 61% if I had to know it would be for free lol.

Longest spin in BEV every since Friday, never checked total kms driven but on Friday evening after work drove from Dublin - Carlow - 17 Kms west of Galway City, drove around maybe 130 Kms around Galway and then drove back to Carlow today.

Charging much slower than expected caught me by surprise, I wasn't expecting it to be that bad, if the id3 even heated up the battery using the battery heater while charging it could have made a difference as I have yet to charge the battery at higher than 21 Deg C or yet to arrive with 15% or less, if you have to plug in at 15% or lower to get decent charging speeds for the duration of the charge then it greatly reduces the effectiveness of having an EV that is capable of taking faster charge rates but simply won't. I still need to figure out the temp needed for decent charging speeds.

I'm sure VW can correct this with software updates along with proper battery heating but they also might not and we might have to buy another EV to get decent charging speeds in Winter. Even in Summer one might struggle to get more than 21 Deg C especially when setting off early the next morning when away from home needing a fast charge, at he height of an Irish Summer ambient temps can get as low as 10 Deg C and always much lower than what a battery would need for proper fast charge.

One thing for sure, electrics have some way to go yet in relation to fast charging.

Overall though the experience was good, I probably fast charged more than what I needed, in fact I did just out of curiosity, I got home with 37% which is way more than I needed but I didn't slow down below 120 on the motorway and there were some stretches at 130, clock speed. The car itself is great, lovely drive, comfortable and the infotainment is good and I am super delighted I have so much range, getting the 77 Kwh was absolutely the correct thing for me.

ML. Are you registered for Ionity through VW WeCharge?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,346 ✭✭✭KCross

I've done many long journey's in the ID.3 and used Ionity and got 100kW from them in both winter and summer where the air temp was ~8°C and had no issues.

VW can make it better of course and they have said they will improve it with the next version but how much control they give the driver is the thing. I suspect they will take the cautious approach and give no flexibility and have it all fully automated like it is now, but lets see what they do.

The car and the charger have certificates embedded in them and they are tied to the car and the car is tied to your WeCharge account.

Yeah, that sounds like progress, would be great!

Would the ID3 fit a set of golf clubs in the boot without putting down the back seats. Can fit them in the focus after I take out the woods. I'm thinking probably not unfortunately.

Googling ID3 Golf Clubs boot gives the expected results...... Loads of comparisons of the ID3 and the Golf

    Thanks

Sent an email to we connect about the 2.3 update and this was part of their response.

"As we further checked in our tools, your vehicle has not been assigned to the campaign yet. Thus, it is not possible to determine in advance for which time-frame your ID.3 will be assigned."

So probably by next Spring I might get it, to say they are slow with software is an understatement. Might as well just download it on USB as having OTA is useless at this rate.

It's bad form really, the dealer should have updated it before I picked it up in the middle of October.

I still don't understand how you got your car much later than I did, but mine had 2.3 from the factory.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 115 ✭✭VWPAT

Might not take that long. Got similar email and got part 1 3 weeks later.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,614 ✭✭✭eagerv

Wasn't Mad_Lads car one of the ones built probably before yours, but was moved to the port minus some chips? But they still shouldn't have released it without doing the update..

Are you seeing better battery heating performance/lower consumption given you have 2.3 from the factory and not OTA?

Cars built with 2.3 have a different battery heating software module to those that received 2.3 OTA.

Is anyone else having consumption as bad as mine? The car used 40% of the battery today to go to work and back, 40km each way. No motorway and low single figure outside temps.

Currently showing a range of 86km with 39% battery

I took it handy going to work today, set to 107 Km/hr and by the time I got to work had used 18% to get 71 Kms, some 120 Km/Hr stints and some strong crosswinds. Temp set to 23 Degrees, the usual and seat on 2 bars.

I find that sometimes setting the temp lower causes the car to just blow cold air at me rather than ramp down the fan it seems to just turn off the heat or turn it way down.

19.5 Deg in the car for me would be too cold, the car has so much range I won't ever need to skimp on heat. If the sun is shining in then I might set it to 18 or 19 Deg C.

Just my luck I suppose and no other reason lol. it was built Mid July awaiting parts so might of had something to do with it.

My guess is that they won't spend all that money to change hardware to get us to v 3.0 and any serious upgrades after this will require new Gen cars, even if they do it will take a long time considering it took me 6 months to get the car I have no hope they will replace the hardware on thousands of cars to get V3.0. Or if we do get V 3.0 it will have less functions than those of us with older hardware.

VW are all over the place, at this rate it will be Gen 2 in the id range before they get it together regarding software.

Looks like the Configurator on Volkswagen Ireland has been updated maybe with some details of the MY22.5 changes - the Tour 5 now shows two additional sensors around the wheel arches - whether for parking or lane change assist, I'm not sure, but would be interesting to find out.

I had to go out late last night. About 3km total, incl stop after 1.5km. Car had not been used all day so battery was not warm, temp near zero with ice on roof but windscreen clear. Not worth heating car, but noticed there was no battery heating. So something has changed since last update, last year same short trip would have showed perhaps 25kWh/100km. Last night around 16kWh/100km.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,069 ✭✭✭Mr Q

16kWh/100km would be great under those conditions. I'm stuck between part 1 and part 2 of the most recent update for months now so hopefully when it finishes it is better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,614 ✭✭✭eagerv

Meant to ask you if you had got the 2.3 update finished yet after your previous post. Seems a long wait, think it took me about 2 weeks to get second part.

Definitely don't find the battery heating as aggressive as last year, but may well be down to the time of day I normally commute (rarely do early mornings, unless to airport or something). Temp rarely below 5 or 6C when I set out...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,069 ✭✭✭Mr Q

I have had some issue with getting part 2 of the update but support keep insisting it is already installed. Even after requesting a picture which still shows software 0792.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,614 ✭✭✭eagerv

Something strange there alright, keep the pressure on them. And your dealer as well..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,308 ✭✭✭✭wotzgoingon

I don't own a iD3 so I don't know but why don't VW just put the files up on the internet so you can download them and put them on a USB stick and you can update the car way quicker.

This car is only getting more expensive -

The Tour 5 has gone from €41,110 in August to €42,161 in October to €43687 Jan 2022-

My part 2 of 2.3 update came 4 weeks after part 1. I believe the plan for battery heating will be 10% of what it uses at the moment for the first 10minute drive and gradually moves up from there. Eases short journey problems.

FFS I should have cancelled, I think they are changing things too fast already lol.
