If this turns out to be another Hurricane Ophelia, when most of the country experienced a gale yet all businesses shut, it will be difficult for Met Eireann to live it down. With the impacts of COVID hitting businesses hard, the last thing we need is a situation in several counties where businesses shut for no reason. And before anyone brings up about how terrible Ophelia was, it wasn't really. Southern fringes got severe winds but it was very isolated. Three people died, however one was killed using his own chainsaw and the guy in Louth hit by a tree yet winds were barely gale force (a terrible freak accident). Afterall, a 60kmph gust can bring a dying tree down.

I feel compelled to post this as it bothers me that we have dumbed the weather down to such an extent that the slightest event now gets warnings. Yes we need to be cautious but have we gone over the top?

Many people will not have a choice but to go to work even in a RED area's ... as OPHELIA showed from what I remember - ignored, its only advice

I can't remember everything that was on the BINGO card, do you have these?

-- Looks like it is coming in faster than expected.

-- When will this reach Dublin?

-- I don't understand why people want to see damage and hazardous conditions.

-- I find the BBC much more reliable.

No Ophelia didn't affect you is what you mean. 400,000 homes were without power. That's nearly a quarter of all homes in Ireland. I live nowhere near the coast or the fringes as you say. The southern half of the country was very badly hit by Ophelia. Two big cities in Ireland Cork and Waterford were badly affected along with many large towns. When it went past the midlands it probably weakened a lot but it was by far the worst storm i witnessed in my life.

Don’t waste your time. Same nonsense every year.

    Position at midday at noon.

Quite a decent gradient to the east of the low centre aswel, which is a little unusual.

    Kerry looks like getting crunched

Coastal Wicklow (Greystones) here, will be curious to see how this unfolds tomorrow. The gusts were quite strong today around the town.

Where? South Tipp is protected by mountains from southerly winds.

It's because the red for Clare is mainly because is for the second part of the storm when the wind direction changes to a north westerly. The early wind won't affect Clare as much, but sure yeah blame met eireann

ICON has struck out in its search for a soulmate and I think that its 15z run (yes it has one) returns to the herd, although that is based on the precip as there does not seem to be an update for pressure. But you can see from that the circulation is back north again (on the 15z ICON).

ECM and Hirlam also tracking straight for Galway Bay, there's almost no model disparity on track now, landfall timing ranges from 1100h to 1400h. The Hirlam would suggest that the Dingle peninsula might see the worst winds, in WNW flow just after the low has reached about the Aran Islands, about 1030h to 1330h would be the peak. Clare would be worst hit around 1430-1630h. Other models seem to have a more uniform outcome across the region so that timing should be regarded as just a suggestion from the one regional model. I think it has a good record though.

Yep, messages just received from 2 schools here to that effect. Remote learning will not be in effect either which is fair enough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 169 ✭✭poppy37

No there’s no provision for online tuition in a red warning, the red warning for Kerry was only issued when we received a text from the local comprehensive confirming the closedown and for students to revise if they wanted to. Incidentally half the pupils are from West Limerick which should really be under a red warning as well. The school was already on a day off today so very happy student here.

Schools in all counties with Red and Orange weather alerts will shut.

That includes Cork, Kerry and Clare. all of which have red alert.

It also covers Limerick, Waterford, Galway, Mayo, Wexford, Dublin, Louth, Wicklow and Meath.

Probably makes sense not to bother their arse with remote learning for the one day, as especially in rural areas, broadband service could experience outages at times and turn any online class into a farce.
