    Great stuff from Sherrock

Good to see the crowd behaving themselves during her match too, very little booing of Clemens from what I heard

It really was incredibly impressive from Sherrock. Both the 141 and 170 checkouts were under huge pressure, she really has fantastic composure on the big stage.

However with all that being said, she still doesn't have a tour card. I wonder if the PDC are trying to think of ways to somehow giver her one without making her go through Q-School.

Tonight's games look fairly underwhelming, especially the last two.

    1. Ryan Joyce v Rob Cross
    2. James Wade v Rowby-John Rodriguez
    3. Gerwyn Price v Bradley Brooks
    4. Jonny Clayton v Nathan Rafferty

The only game there I can see a 'possible' upset in is Joyce v Cross, you'd be inclined to think its a 'given' for Cross to take that handily but I wouldn't put money on it.....Ryan Joyce is throwing some beautiful arrows last couple of Months. I'm a big fan of Rob Cross & think he's a brilliant finisher but.....mmmmm...... like I say, NOT a game to have a punt on.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,761 ✭✭✭Dillonb3

Could she earn one by default if she climbs into top 62 by end of world championship? 2 more wins in grand slam will put her 67th in OOM and just leave her 4.5K short of 62.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 12,294 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kingp35

Yeah she could, I think the last player to do that was Ratajski. He earned enough in a year to get into the top 64 and won a card without going through Q-School.

Rowby-John Rodriguez is another who doesn't have a tour card but could win it back by getting into the top 64. He's more likely to do it than Sherrock.

  • Registered Users Posts: 348 ✭✭Timmy O Toole

So she needs to make the semi final of the slam plus win a match at the world's while hoping no one around her in the OOM wins anything? Doubtful.

Amazing that she couldn't get a card through the development tour or Q school despite how well she plays on TV.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,672 ✭✭✭TheChrisD

I agree that beating Mensur and Wright/José is unlikely; but the route of beating Mensur and two matches at the Worlds isn't really out of the realm of possibility, especially if she gets a good draw at the Worlds.

That would put her on £45k, which based on the current provisional rankings including the WC would be 60th place. Then it's just a case of hoping that she doesn't lose more than 4 places from those below her getting lots of money.

Ryan Joyce with Tetris shirt/walk on?

Great to see Rob Cross back at 'top level' performance.....great numbers/ finishing. He kinda 'lost his mojo' after becoming world #1 but I think he's got an unbelievable talent/knack @ thethe oche. When he first hit the big time, beating p Taylor etc. I had him pegged as the new MVG..... thought he'd be world#1 for several years. Ryan Joyce met his 'Waterloo' in that game

He was never world number 1. He also won a major TV title in each year since he joined the tour. His consistency let's him down alright

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 12,294 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kingp35

Tonight going as I expected so far, all incredibly one sided matches.

Joyce was really disappointing, a great start but completely fell away. Credit to Cross to putting him under pressure though.

I stand corrected!!!!! For some reason I had it in my head Cross reached the 'holy grail ' in 2018, my bad as the young uns say

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,513 ✭✭✭shockframe

Rodriguez is very mediocre but a good show by Wade. Did it for his country no doubt!

Ah lads the roaring out of Price is just embarrassing.

He sailedvfairly close to the wind there.....10-8, I thought he'd win with a 3/4 leg 'cushion '

He seems to be getting worse with age.

it was it seemed an accepted eccentricity of his but I think over the last while it’s become very off putting both to the audience and more importantly his opponents...

a good throw and it’s the turn to the audience, the shouting and roaring, basically the panto act, then he goes to retrieve his darts, then a word to the scorer and referee... all the while taking the momentum out of his opponent...

its not done for entertainment, I don’t know why the PDC don’t just sanction him,

16.01 - During a match players shall conduct themselves in a manner of respect for the other

player(s) and shall refrain from annoying the other players or using offensive language or

making offensive gestures and shall refrain from any unsportsmanlike conduct.

{EG: such as deliberately losing a Leg or match, deliberately delaying matchplay, or

             interfering with the throw of another player.}

16.02 - Any player found by the Organisers to be in breach of Clause 16.01 shall be deemed to

have brought the Sport of Darts into disrepute and shall be disqualified from any further

         participation in the tournament

However, if the player, or the Officials of the said player's team challenge the

disqualification, or forfeiture, the matter shall be appealed immediately to the WDF

Executive, whose decision shall be final and binding.

Wright making things very hard for himself, playing very poor

Suljovic playing awful here but still only two behind.

Mensur looks done. He doesn't look like he's able to break her throw

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,011 ✭✭✭PsychoPete

Thought Suljovic would have no problems on winning this one

In fairness ....... did anyone see this coming.....??....i thought suljovic would finish this off with a 3 or 4 leg cushion!!!!!!!

Kudos to Fallon Sherrock...... well done

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,421 ✭✭✭✭Rikand

Well I thought she had a great chance, but I'm a fan of hers, so I would be biased :)

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 12,294 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kingp35

Well done to Sherrock but Suljovic was woeful. Pitiful performance. Wonder did the pressure get to him?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,708 ✭✭✭Speak Now

Odd the way you meet the player from your group in the last 8 if you both win first knockout match. Was this covid/pod related?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,421 ✭✭✭✭Rikand

It's pretty lame but having said that, if it wasnt this way, fallon would probably get the winner of MvG and Anderson and I wouldnt fancy her chances against them. Peter Wright not on top form yet, so a chance of getting some revenge

I wasn't even thinking of Fallon, it applied to every group. They could easily have had no repeat pairings until the final if they so wished. Just thought it was unusual.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,982 ✭✭✭Degag

It is unusual. As far as i'm aware it's always been this way for some reason.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 12,294 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kingp35

Yeah it's always been this way. It makes no sense, very strange way of doing it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,513 ✭✭✭shockframe

I'd say a lot is down to having the quarter finals played over different nights. Couldnt have one last 16 winner playing the following day or another playing 3 days after.

Though it is a bit strange having quarter finals being potential group stage game rematches.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,508 ✭✭✭✭ArmaniJeanss

The format is terrible as it effectively breaks it down into 4 mini-competitions - one person and one person only from Groups A & B will be in the semi-final, ditto C/D etc. As said it's always been like this.

My understanding is it harks back to the first few years of the Grand Slam when they had 3 headline players (Taylor, Lewis, Barney, obviously seeded 1,2,3) and they didn't want the situation to arise whereby the three of them would end-up in the same half of the knockout draw because the wrong one came second in their group. Their dream outcome was a Lewis v Barney semi and the winner playing PT in the final.

Doing it 'properly' always risked the Euro 2020 situation whereby a couple of the 'wrong' teams won the group and we ended up with Belgium, Portugal, France, Italy & Spain in the same half, and England v a bag of spanners in the other half.

WTF happened there? To be fair i couldn't see what MvG did

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,508 ✭✭✭✭ArmaniJeanss

Thats not really a reason, as you could still maintain the different nights thing. e.g., from tonight we have two players qualifying from Groups E & F (Wright and Sherrock) and two from Groups G & H (Smith and MVG/Ando). Instead of E and F playing in the quarters and having a repeat pairing, you could easily mix them into G & H at this stage. Two guaranteed new match-ups and everyone is still on the same schedule.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,513 ✭✭✭shockframe

Yes should have pointed that out too!

Gando played well in that one. Was unlucky with the draw. Nearly better than the other 3 winners tonight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,629 ✭✭✭ThebitterLemon

What’s up with Anderson the whinging moan bag. Should have just gotten on with it and taken the leg!!

he didnt do anything - MvG was giving out to himself. Probably called himself a **** bollix or something and Gary thought MvG was saying it to him

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,280 ✭✭✭✭mdwexford

Great game though, proper old school with both of them near their best.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,823 ✭✭✭Deeper Blue

    The QFs look interesting

Two hard games to call in the top half

I reckon Wright will have too much for Sherrock

    MvG to annihilate Smith

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 12,294 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kingp35

There's a little bit extra riding on the Wright v Sherrock match if my maths are correct. If Sherrock wins that means she'll earn a minimum of 40k from the Grand Slam and she already has a minimum of 7.5k from the World Championships. This would put her on 47.5k which should be enough to put her into the top 64 and so earn a 1 year tour card.

So basically Sherrock is playing for her tour card against Wright.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,028 ✭✭✭boomdocker

Tough ask for her if Snakebite plays anything near his best

He's pretty unpredictable these days though, so she has a chance

  • Registered Users Posts: 348 ✭✭Timmy O Toole

Van Gerwen is finally looking back to his best isn't he. Can't see anyone one left getting near him

I was really confused when watching as I knew he scored 42 and I thought he had 82 left but then Webster said the graphic was wrong and he had 78 left. As the marker got it wrong it's still a valid leg but he only scored 497 points.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,672 ✭✭✭TheChrisD

No, it's just down to how the Slam works in the knockout stages. It's the only way to ensure that the seeded players will play 1/8 2/7 3/6 4/5 in the knockouts, assuming both make it through their groups.

  • Registered Users Posts: 348 ✭✭Timmy O Toole

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,823 ✭✭✭Deeper Blue

I was sure the marker had gotten it wrong aswell, I'm glad to read that as I thought I was going mad 😂

Has Russ Bray been with the PDC since the very beginning?

I like his style but he can't have long left with errors like this week.
