The Irish Times has some details on this, which wasn't meant to be out yet

Basically - we're getting nothing for a decade except DART+ and Metrolink - even Luas Finglas which seemed to be higher up and easier to deliver

After that they propose putting Luas lines everywhere - Clongriffin, Balgriffin, Tyrrelstown, Blanchardstown, Clondalkin, Tallaght-Kimmage, Tallaght-Knocklyon and UCD-Sandyford as well as the Lucan/Ringsend/Finglas/Bray proposals. It should be easy-ish to put Luas lines down on Bus Connects corridors I guess, but if that is the plan it should be achievable much earlier.

DART+ Tunnel kicked out for decades

Eastern Bypass finally officially dead - its been obviously dead for ages. This should free up some land reservations.

In fairness, if such an extensive coverage of Luas lines were to be delivered for Dublin, then it would substantially alleviate the need for Metro in the medium term.

what's the medium term? the Luas lines are planned for 20 years from now; with probably 5 or 6 changes of govt in that time frame it's a meaningless target.

Does anyone know WHY public transport initiatives/infrastructure are being mothballed again?

Have the Greenies given a view now they are in Gov? Money is cheap now, environmental impact of so many cars on the road needs sorting, the population is increasing, public transport is just not getting the investment it deserves for all our sakes whether you drive, cycle, walk, scoot.

Shame on them.... again.

The initial Green response I've seen is basically blaming the NTA. Like they aren't the governing party. Ryan is not focused on his brief at all and the entire state seem to be obsessed with electric cars as a panacea

It is unreal. If you look at the history of metro systems in Europe, here’s a tiny comparable selection:

Budapest 1896

Lisbon 1959

Athens 1904

Oslo 1966

Dublin 2035 (if we are very lucky)

Of course we are told to all leave our dirty cars behind and either buy electric or take public transport. Proposal to virtually ban very many cars in Dublin. Yeah, just throw the keys to the city centre at feral scumbags. Nobody does joined up thinking.

They might do joined up thinking, but it does not extend to joined Luas lines - they just cross in the City Centre. They could not join the Heuston side of main line, even though the Phoenix Park Tunnel was built when Queen Victoria was around. It was pointed out many times - but no, it was not suitable until the Dart Underground was cancelled and then suddenly it could be used, but only for a few trains a day.

Thinking is just not enough - doing is what matters. So what are they doing? Well, nothing - what is their excuse this time?

My Dad used to talk about the Phoenix Park Tunnel when I was a kid in the 60s, and how it could be used for commuter trains. They are always only at least 7 decades late in implementing anything.
