Resurfacing at Coolcower to commence Monday the 11th until December 6th. Stop go in place 7pm to 7am nightly. Badly needed and won’t affect traffic much.

I wonder will any of the bypass work around there be done in parallel

Clonfadda road finally reopened! Nice bridge built, will make for a nice vantage point to see the work being done below.

Massive cutting there they did some job in the time it was closed.

New alignment on the Millstreet is open now too.

Will there be a roundabout at Coolcower to join the new road/stay on the old (current) road?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,754 ✭✭✭KrisW1001

Yes. You can see the space cleared for it at the end of that video.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,963 ✭✭✭Chris_5339762

Coolcower yes, but I think it's going to be a direct link without a roundabout on the Kerry side.

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 14,459 Mod ✭✭✭✭marno21

The Kerry side flows directly into the existing N22 but there is a GSJ there for access to/from the old route and into Baile Bhuirne.

That area at Coolcower where the roundabout is isn't cleared either, it was built up from the river level. Quite a lot of fill gone in there it was some operation going on in August/September. Dumper central.

Yep was incredible to see it "appearing" up out of the ground, when I could catch glimpses.

Lengthy document on the development of the Coolyhane Road Upper overbridge by the contractors. Fascinating level of detail.

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 14,459 Mod ✭✭✭✭marno21

Lads yer all gone very quiet.

New overbridge at Kilnagurteen opened on December 3rd. New underbridge alignment at Ballyveerane just east of there is now also complete.

Storm Barra blew down much of the anti-rubbernecking hoarding at the Coolcour junction. Work is progressing at pace behind it and works on the new junction at Coolcour will likely commence in 2022.

    New newsletter:

Interestingly, all structure works east of the Cill na Martra road (near Mons Bar) are now complete bar possibly some works on the Sullane bridge. Drainage works are complete from Millstreet Road to the Foherish river also.

Given how much more advanced this section is than west of there (which isn't very advanced at all in parts), you'd have to wonder if there's any thought being given to an early opening, but the mechanics of this (where the western tie in would be) are tricky. An opening to Millstreet Road would be very straightforward but possibly just lead to lots of rat runs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,754 ✭✭✭KrisW1001

Opening from Coolcower as far as Millstreet Rd would make a huge difference to traffic in Macroom town centre - anyone heading for Kerry would no longer be driving through the main street of Macroom.

If it could be done without delaying the whole project, I think it would be a welcome relief for people living in Macroom.

Even if that section was opened with cones down the centre, one lane each way, and subject to a 60 km/h limit, it would still be better for through traffic than driving through Macroom.

Great update. Really starting to take shape now. They’re at it gung ho again at Coolcower since resuming after Christmas and the final alignment is really taking shape there

When this opens will it make Dublin - Killarney via Cork more attractive than via Limerick (time, reliability, comfort)?

The scale and complexity of the engineering on this project is so impressive, far more so than for the inter-urban motorways. It will be a fantastic drive when it's done.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,056 ✭✭✭awaywithyou

some digging being done at the county bounds..! the farmer at coolyhane unfortunately has had a fair chunk of land taken off him as well as the new road being right alongside his farmyard.... it will take a bit of getting used to for them to see so much traffic close to their home.... i wonder will it be long before we see a dual carriageway all the way to Cork city...?? pity google maps dont update their pictures of the area to give us an aerial view of the new road

I'd agree with you about the scale (and the engineering challenge), but for me the number one complex roads project in the country at the moment is Dunkettle. Holy God it's a headscratcher.

  • Registered Users Posts: 38 OpinionN

A long time I'd say unfortunately. There's no plan to deal with Macroom to Ballincollig as it currently stands. I'd say the current project will need to be completed in order for the Lissarda stretch to become a higher priority item.

It's not terrible from Lissarda to Ballincollig, but Coolcower to Lissarda is bad enough.

  • Registered Users Posts: 38 OpinionN

Wrong thread, but yep Dunkettle is like 3D chess or something. The most complex roads project I've witnessed for a good few years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,081 ✭✭✭theguzman

Definitely only try to avoid hitting the Jack Lynch tunnel early am and late pm if returning Killarney Dublin. I always go via Cork anyway even it means the second toll, Killarney - Limerick is one long drawl with 5 towns and there continuous drag of slow speed limits and traffic jams Abbeyfeale- Templeglantine - NewcastleWest - Croagh and the notorious Adare. The entire stretch should be 2X2 and alot of it could be upgraded easily without a new road build.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,596 ✭✭✭✭siblers

Any likelihood of this happening? Or will they only open it when it's fully finished?

  • Registered Users Posts: 38 OpinionN

I don't believe it was in the original budget/schedule/plan, to partially open.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,754 ✭✭✭KrisW1001

Nah. It was never planned to open in phases. And looking at the latest drone footage, I don’t even think the Eastern section would be ready that much before the Western one anymore: it might allow traffic to use the new route around Macroom a couple of months early, but doing so could delay the full opening by twice that. Not worth it, I think.

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 14,459 Mod ✭✭✭✭marno21

50km/h limit in place at Coolcower until 23/12/22.

Work to commence on the eastern tie in roundabout ?

Traffic will be some mess there when the heavy works commence especially when the peak summer season starts with everything open this summer and the usual Kerry traffic. Friday evenings will be like Game of Thrones.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,442 ✭✭✭embraer170

If coming from Killarney, isn't it already better to go via Mallow and join the M8 at Mitchelstown? It is a bit of a slog but no worse than the Killarney-Limerick.

Our very crazy Mr Dronehawk, has just posted a new video of the scheme from east to west. Its 11mins long and goes along the whole scheme. Remember 11 - 13mins is roughly how long it'll take to drive, so its been sped up to real-time.

This is wonderful. Great perspective on the entire 22km.

I can't help but notice when watching this how much more far advanced the scheme is from Coolcower to Bothar Cill na Martra. West of there is months behind the eastern section. At Toon Lain, it becomes much more advanced again and is very advanced from there to the Big Cut just west of the Bohill Bridge where it drops back again from there to Slievereagh.

You'd wonder would a partial opening from Coolcower to the Mons Bar be possible? The underbridge at the Mons Bar is the only major structure on the entire scheme yet to commence.

…or how about: “starts off fine, but then gets bogged down and ends in a confusing mess that nobody’s happy about” if you mean the TV programme, or “starts okay, but gets slower and slower until it grinds to a halt, and everyone’s given up hope that it’ll ever be resolved”, if you’re talking about the books.

50km/h signs finally now up at Coolcower. Looks like work should begin there shortly.

The alignment of the new road looks very advanced along here. The weather since Xmas has been incredible for this kind of work so I wouldn’t be surprised if they are ahead of schedule along this stretch.

Itll be interesting to see how they manage the tie in given the heavy traffic and the narrow nature of the existing road.

Eamon Ryan hinting at a potential early partial opening in late 2022/early 2023 in the Dail yesterday:

The ongoing new bypass project consists of the construction of a dual carriageway from Macroom to Ballyvourney, finishing just before the county bounds of Kerry. The project comprises a 22 km dual carriageway with four junctions beginning west of Ballyvourney passing north of Macroom and rejoining the existing N22 south of Macroom.

Construction commenced in the first quarter of 2020 and is due for completion in the first quarter of 2024. Construction is progressing to plan, with significant earthworks operations under way. Construction of a significant number of structures is ongoing. The longest precast concrete beams in Ireland, at 49 m, were manufactured for a bridge on this scheme and were successfully lifted into place in December 2020. In addition, a large steel deck was successfully launched across a river and valley in March 2021. A number of structures with decks in place will facilitate the mass haul of earthworks on the scheme from west to east.

Overall, works are approximately 60% to 65% complete with full completion expected in 2024 and a possible early opening of a section of the scheme in late 2022 or early 2023.

TII has informed my Department that signage will be provided at both ends of the scheme to warn the oncoming road users of the new road layout ahead. Cyclists and pedestrians will be asked to use the old N22 which will be adapted, where possible, to accommodate active travel modes.

Cork County Council is reviewing the existing junctions to ensure road safety. The N22-R585 Castlemore junction is currently under assessment and will be subject to safety improvements in early next year. Other junctions on this section of the N22 will be reviewed in order of priority, taking account of accident data.

Not a hope from the progress on the western sections I have seen.

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 14,459 Mod ✭✭✭✭marno21

Agreed, some of the western sections are well behind.

Some parts are quite advanced though. The section around Macroom has earthworks & bridges pretty much complete now. They were beginning to lay the foundations for the road this week at Coolcower.

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 14,459 Mod ✭✭✭✭marno21

Very much looking forward to the next drone update. The contractors have been making massive use of the good weather since the turn of the year and a large amount of earthworks seem to be progressed. Very visible from the existing road around Coolcower and Coolnacaheragh.

I find it very difficult to believe this won’t open at least 6-9 months ahead of schedule. 1 main structure left to finish and much of the earthworks complete, with a long summer ahead.

As per the quote above, the official date is still 1st Quarter of 2024. There’s a lot of work still to be done on the Western section of this project, so a full opening would be very unlikely before Q4 2023.

I hope our friend DroneHawk manages a trip down to Macroom quite soon. Really have to hand it to the contractors they have made some incredible progress since the turn of the year. The excellent weather has clearly been a major help.

I have a feeling the progress since the last video will come as a pleasant surprise to many on here.

Tarmac going down this week and last at the eastern tie in at Coolcower. Work on the new alignment for the N22 to Cork is also ongoing.

Long article on the bypass on the Examiner website

Says its "expected" the Coolcower-Carrigaphooca section will open either at the end of this year or early 2023. Here's to hoping.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,964 ✭✭✭cantalach

The only thing that doesn’t add up there is that they don’t seem to have made any provision for a phased opening from Coolcower to Carrigaphooca. The spot where the new road crosses the existing N22 at Carrigaphooca is not going to be a junction. It is just an overbridge. It has been complete for some time now, and the embankment carrying the new road west from the overbridge seems now to have been built up to the height of the final surface. Also, the new alignment of the existing N22 seems to have been “finished”. I’ve had a good look every time I’ve passed through, looking for signs of a temporary merge being built, and I really don’t see anything to suggest that this is on the cards. That said, I haven’t been out that way for about 5-6 weeks so maybe something has changed in the interim.
