So may reference to Consultants' reports. I get the impression that if the amount spent on consultants was actually used on construction, then we would already have a lot more greenways. Do Councils, the NRA, Waterways Ireland and Irish rail not have any capability to do some basic project design and assessment?

The NDP states Galway to Dublin Greenway will be completed by 2026, lets hope so.

The Galway to Dublin Greenway will be completed by 2026 whilst 2021 will see the commencement of construction on a Greenway Bridge in Athlone. We will also see the completion of the Royal and Grand Canal Greenways (including the Dublin sections) by 2025. Greenways around the country will link in with Active Travel infrastructure in our towns and cities as we develop a National Cycle Network strategy (to be published in 2022). Nine greenway projects financed under the first call under the Strategy for the Future Development of National and Regional Greenways in 2019 and 2021 should be opened between 2022 and 2024

No, they don't and it would be a waste if they all did have this capability.

Is the N56 Greenway fully completed? Are there any quiet parts?

From what I remember of driving around last year, it wasn't really a Greenway, more of a segregated cycle lane beside the N56.

Took a cycle this lunchtime on it as far as the Garycastle junction

Its decent, hard to really get too excited given the limited length. The bridge will be the big thing. Saw the fencing off around the Library

By the looks of things, the bridge will be biased towards those coming from castle side. Do the plans for this mean that those coming from Monksland will have to do a U turn to access it or get a smooth approach

Not sure I understand you regarding the u turn. The bridge will be located between the Luan Gallery and the Radisson, so its fairly close to the existing bridge already, I think 60-70 meters away, so it shouldn't mean much in terms of actual diversion.

Its likely there will be some kind of chicane or other speed measures as its a city center bridge shared with pedestrians, so I can't see anyone being able to go over it at full speed.

Edit: I came across the EIS on the ABP site which has some useful images, added below.

I don't think those roadside cycle facilities are actually considered Greenways. When it was discussed here, I think the consensus was that they should have another term, Greyway or similar, there doesn't seem to be an official term for less than a Greenway but better than a painted hard shoulder.

Were still working on the approach to Letterkenny from Illistrin a few weeks ago. I don't know what's beyond Termon.

I saw the consultation for the Avonbeg Rd scheme is now open, which led me to spot that the below link is missing on the map @riddlinrussell

TII and IFA have reached the fighting about money stage of the Galway-Athlone greenway planning, I'm sure a deal will be done, hopefully reasonably quickly.

As far as I'm aware, if the High Court refuses leave to appeal to the Court of Appeal, there's still a window of 28 days to apply directly to the Court of Appeal itself for leave to appeal. So it mightn't be the end of the saga yet.

I guess we'll know more later today when we hear if the stay on works is lifted or not.

Thanks, I wasn't 100% sure if all avenues of appeal were closed with that decision

Assuming it's all systems go, there's still the small matter that, as things stand, the greenway will terminate at the local road on the north side of the estuary as a 1km section linking with the Valentia River Viaduct has been refused permission due to coastal erosion concerns.

It should be possible to solve this by diverting a little inland and then swinging down to the bridge but it'll require a new planning application.

Alas, I'm not so confident there's any viable solution to save the section west of Cahersiveen to Renard Point.

It could end up being on road in Cahirsiveen to Renard Point the road is mostly wide enough for segregated cycle tracks - the junction to turn down to Renard Point would require some traffic calming. Been a while since I was down there so memory may be playing tricks.

    The final SDCC section of Grand Canal Greenway up to the Kildare border at Hazelhatch has gone to tender;

Personal opinion here. I think we need more parking facilities for the Royal Canal greenway in and around Enfield. I fancied a cycle from Enfield to Kilcock earlier today and couldn't find any parking anywhere near the entry point beside Enfield rail station. Plenty of parking in the station but its 24/7 pay display. All the nearby businesses have warnings they're for customers only (perfectly understandable), thankfully found an on street space near the Edenderry junction which was only free because of the bank holiday. When you consider further down the canal from after Moyvalley there's plenty of free parking entry points its a bit unwelcoming from Enfield and I reckon Kilcock probably isn't much better.

    This too shall pass.

But if free parking was installed it would be immediately taken up by everyone who previously parked at the station and there'll be an empty car park there afterwards? If you'd bought something in Enfield would that not make you a customer?

Pay-parking in a glorified village. Depressing. May as well live in Dublin when getting rode sideways for your money.

Why do Irish Rail try and turn car parks into revenue streams - their business is transporting people by train. They should give free parking to patrons of the trains. Charges should be just for non-passenger parking.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,576 ✭✭✭Pete_Cavan

You're right, there should be a holiday sun lounger approach to parking, a few people get there early and have their place for the rest of the day, screw everyone else. If you want to park in an area of high demand for parking, you should be grateful for pay parking ensuring a rate of turnover.

Parking cars take up a lot of space, it's perfectly reasonable that people should pay for it. Unless you are suggesting that on street park be removed and put to other uses?

OK, maybe not right beside a commuter station, but if you compare the stretch from Moyvalley to Kilcock to say Mullingar to Abbeyshrule, it feels a lot less welcoming to visitors. Fine if you want to install a €2 to pass barrier and make sure it's well away from the train station but give the day trippers something. I reckon there are at least 8 free car parks between Mullingar and Cloondara specifically made for the Greenways.

    This too shall pass.

    Leeching what exactly?

Is it a thing the closer you get to Dublin the less and less recreational cycling is encouraged among families?

    This too shall pass.

People wanting others to subsidise the storing of their property.
