I just got this breaking news from the BBC News app. A man has killed several people while being armed with bows & arrows in a Co-Op supermarket in Kongsberg Norway.
The incident took place at around 17:30 Irish time. 18:30 local time. Police are not looking for anyone else in relation to this attack. Police have said that the suspect may have acted alone.
BBC News - Kongsberg: Several killed in Norway bow and arrow attack
Bow and arrow attack, don't hear of that often. Hopefully just some nutjob acting alone and not affiliated with any organisations. RIP to all those killed.
At least 4 people killed now according to the Guardian. It's very sad news to hear things like this but you have to wonder if this attacks like these could be exploited by terrorist groups more often if police try to monitor their activities in the future.
The amount of danger that these items cause if used in the wrong hands could be more catastrophic in more extreme ways if not monitored properly.
5 confirmed dead now , that could still rise, seen some of the arrows used in the attacks
Rather interesting choice of weaponry in a county with armed police. RIP to those killed.
Most of the police there don't carry afaik, there would be a bit of time for someone to go on a rampage before the armed units turned up. Still a strange choice of weapon.
They don't Carry firearms while patrolling but they carry submachine guns and pistol's in locked cases in every police vehicle ,so they are armed at most times but need permission from the chief of police to access the weapons for duties
They've been armed from tonight as a short term measure
Translation: Due to the serious incident in Kongsberg where several people were killed and injured tonight, the police in Norway are temporarily armed. The Norwegian Police Directorate has issued a national order for armaments. It is given to increase preparedness and the police's ability to respond. This is an additional emergency measure. The police currently have no concrete indications that there is a change in the threat level in the country.
I think this is more of a reflection of fear that this might be, against all odds, part of a bigger terror attack, which often sees multiple events happening over different locations.
Paris 2015 for example.
Creative though, so kudos for the delivery!
How's Junior Cert year going for you?
37 year old Danish man arrested.
Its a pity it is difficult to turn a bow on yourself afterwards.
Yes. Looking at the damage he caused, and how long it took him to be apprehended, you have to assume a certain level of skill, and a very calm hand. It’’s an unusual choice of weapon forms random attack, for which a gun would have been much easier to use.
Since he is represented by lawyers already I am sure an insanity defense is already being developed though.
Well he is entitled to a defence no matter what he did.
"I am sure an insanity defense is already being developed though."
What else could they use? Do you think these are the actions of a rationally thinking sane person?
I never said he wasn’t entitled to legal support, I said he was obviously clear enough to realise that this was the best course of action.
Most insanity defense claims fail.
5 people killed ... and one can imagine the nice holiday camp sentence he'll get in Norway ...
Yes yes I know Norway has one of the lowest repeat offender rates in the world and lowest crime etc .... just when you focus on one case it just seems so unjust - Brevik comes to mind ...
There still trying to figure if this is a lone wolf terror attack ,
Attacker was a local Norwegian who recently converted to Islam
He was Danish.
The Norwegian report I read said he was ethnic Norwegian
Converts, of any faith, take their new religion and it's commands very serious.
Of course they are the actions of a sane person, he just has a different belief system, one where this is not just sane but the highest act a person can perform.
That doesn't make it right as far as I or you are concerned. You are looking at it through a purely modern European lens.
Investigated previously by authorities in relation to radicalism according to news just now.
Reports say he is Danish, nothing about his religion.
Rte had it
DAnish mother, Norwegian father. Radicalised Muslim convert
Murderous scum, does not matter what nationality he is. Families of 5 innocent people destroyed.
It seems unjust because your looking at it with a view that the justice system should punish people rather than fix them. It's a fundamentally different philosophy.
A supporter of restorative justice could tell you that it's unjust that someone who realises the mistakes of their ways, accepts them, fixes their underlying issues, and is ready to contribute to society in a meaningful way is left to rot in a jail cell will no support just because you want to see them 'punished'.
What a shock
