What’s the best way to sign up for Ionity these days, directly with them? Looking to have Ionity as an option just in case. PS - I’m looking to avoid crazy holding charges on my credit card ;)

I wouldnt, they add a fee on top of the really expensive Ionity fees.

Something like Chargepoint or Maingau would be better

Both of whom are more expensive than going directly to Ionity.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 19,492 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

And are still managing to add less of a fee than easygo!

Theres no difference between 73 and 75 cents per kWh, it's both extortionate. I just wont use ionity directly due to the ridiculous pre auth of 80 quid

Is that avoidable with ChargePoint/ Easy Go etc?

I think Chargepoint take a tenner on sign up and take auto top ups.

EinfachStromLaden (Maingau) just invoice you the cost.

Chargepoint is PAYG (same as ecars)

Maingau is a monthly invoice (same as non PAYG ecars but without a monthly sub)

Both of them avoid the ridiculous 80 euro pre auth. I woudlnt mind one pre auth but sometimes it takes 4 goes to get an Ionity charger working. And my "max" at an ionity currently is about 21 quid in my Ioniq anyway

  • Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 11,725 ✭✭✭✭Black_Knight

    Ah yes. Forgot about that.

Last time I use ionity I used chargepoint to use up my old credit (set my credit card to a virtual revolut card to stop them Auto topping up). Not sure who I'd use next time. Maingau at 75c I guess is worth it.

Virta app suggests 71c/kWh but I've but registered to find out. I use ionity so little

I used the Easygo app today and it was a doddle, I was charging in no time.

Contrast that to the Ionity app which has failed to get me charging on 3 separate occasions.

I'm happy to pay a little extra if it works.

I see there's now an Ionity Passport plan open to anyone, so you don't need to go through a 3rd party to get a subscription (one of the main issues I had with the whole thing)

Not much info on how to sign up, I'll try it on the app later

Rates are better than standard, but still worse than some of the exclusive plans

Small point of order 😛 the Ionity Pay&Go rate is 73c/kWh here not 79c

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,187 ✭✭✭innrain

I wonder what triggered this change of heart? In 2020 when they switched to the 79c/kWh some said is to discourage the Tesla owners of using their network. Since then Tesla added few hundred station to their network and didn't flinch. Tesla speaks about opening the network to others. Are we talking price war here? This year I have seen lots of local councils from DE having negotiated special pricing for their residents. Even tested one here (you need German address). Would we see the likes of Maingau returning with better than 73c pricing? Have they realized that they're bleeding money and their service is as Diess said subpar? It is good news anyway.

I'd say it's a combination of all of the above

I think Ionity was trying to sell their services wholesale to car manufacturers and other charging providers, which was why they originally said you could get deals through mobility service providers

I'm guessing that plan went nowhere and they realised they're losing out on potential customers, particularly since it seemed most of the subscription providers were in Germany

Also, since Ionity is currently shopping around for investors, they're probably trying to make the business a more attractive looking investment. Having a base of subscribers paying monthly fees would go a long way towards this

Ionity is actually jointly owned by the carmakers Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Ford, Volkswagen (via Audi and Porsche) and, since the end of 2020, Hyundai-Kia which each have a a 20 per cent shareholding of the joint venture. Shell and Renault were reportedly interested in bidding for a further 20%-25% stake a couple of months ago for around €400-500 million but I havent heard anything further on that.

I tried signing up for that but the app doesnt load and theres no where to sign up on the website

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 19,492 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

That doesnt allow me to sign up for the reduced rates?

Use the app. For Android tap on the menu button upper right hand side which opens your account. you'll notice a message about Ionity passport.

I visited Gorey for the first time a few days ago and again today while I’ve been back visiting family. First time using a high power charger having only had the car 3 weeks, and having read this here before I was pleasantly surprised to get over 240kw today!

IONITY: Europe's first open charging network with Plug & Charge function

The leading pan-European high-power charging network, announces today it is the first open charging network in Europe to offer Plug & Charge, at all its charging stations. The announcement will make electric vehicle charging easier than ever before.

That's very interesting and always an advantage that Tesla have on their network.

I wonder then, which rate will it charge you - the base rate for ionity (79c), or if you have a subscription with VW or one of the other manufacturers that give you a better rate (33c) will it give you that one?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 21,566 ✭✭✭✭Cyrus

reading the article it sounds like it is effective now? anyone care to check :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,538 ✭✭✭cannco253

    some more detail here

"VW, for example, says that it sees Plug&Charge as an essential convenience feature and will introduce the technology to other vehicles in the coming year without revealing further details."

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,187 ✭✭✭innrain

That is the big question. First you need a compatible car, then you need a contract. They need somehow to know who to bill. Probably the reason for the 200 quid annual subscription they've just launched. Here the MSP (mobility service providers) would have a place otherwise you'd need to have contracts with all network operators which is impractical. In Ireland there are not so many but still. I think the likes of Plugsurfing/evway/plugshare who don't necessarily own a network but sell you a service would gain traction once the Plug&Charge becomes more popular.

In the case of the VW cars, they've added the We Charge app to the car. At the moment it can only find chargers, but they'll be adding the ability to start charging later

I'm guessing plug&charge will be part of this

What might get tricky is if you want to use another charging app (say Chargepoint). If they don't have an app on the car then it probably can't use plug&charge
