Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. hi folks

looks like the speedmaster is heading to Italy. Any suggestions for shipping with insurance?

    anyone use securus insurance?

    thanks

    mick

Never used securus but good reviews on other forums. DHL will insure also but expect 2-300 euro.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,814 ✭✭✭micks_address

Looks like I can courier for about 30 to 50 euro and 25 euro for insurance with securus

That's a bargain. An Post take €47 for just regular registered shipping but uninsured, within the EU (for a big enough heavy enough box like your speedy)

I used Secursus & DHL to send my sub to Italy - it was 65 for the insurance and 85 for DHL. Can't remember what the fully insured DHL quote was, but I think it was under 200 quid. It was an easy process with Secursus, but I suppose you don't know how good they are until something bad happens.

Having a bit of a clear out.

First up is my Ocean 39 GMT Premium 500 Ceramic

These are €705 on the Steinhart website (watch +shipping)

Was hoping to get €500 for it.

Also up is my Ocean One Titanium 500 premium Ceramic. These are €635 (watch + shipping).

    Was hoping for €450.

If you are interested in either drop me a message and we can talk!

I always use DHL express . To ship it it would be roughly 100 euro with insurance . It’s 10 euro per 1k . most times it is delivered next day too .

PS don’t mention it’s a watch as they won’t take it . I always ship stating Horology goods .

In the end my speedmaster stayed in Dublin. The buyer of my aqua Terra organised postage himself. Fedex collected yesterday and he arranged insurance with securus

  • Registered Users Posts: 618 ✭✭✭Pablo_Flox

Ocean One Titanium has been sold.

The Ocean 39 GMT Premium 500 Ceramic is still available

They really are. It's funny, and I feel stupid even expressing the sentiment but, I haven't quite "bonded" with mine yet (same as above but 42mm), as in I don't love it, or find myself admiring it as much as other watches, it leaves me a bit cold. But it's noticeably more accurate than my other 3 (cheaper) automatics and it's clearly very well screwed together. A quality product.

Hi guys, looking for advice on where abouts in Galway to get a few watches appraised or valued?

Hartman's in Galway would be the 1st name that springs to mind.

If you post some photos here though, I'm fairly certain that the wisdom of the crowd here could give a very near approximation and let you have a little bit of knowledge before you find a valuation.

Need to liquidate some cash for another project, so letting go of my Kermit. I was going to give this a long hold but something has cropped up. I never really wear this one and my hulk occupies my green watch lust.

This is a 2007 Kermit, Full collectors set (that makes quite a price difference on these) in minty unmolested condition. Recently pressure tested with watchfix.

Will pop it on adverts but prefer a boards sale. These really are a beautiful. Will certainly be the cheapest full set one going. PM me if interested.

def the best version of sub you can get, vintage yet modern, a short production run. One of the Undervalued Rolex sports if there is such a thing.

closes eyes and repeats quietly *I do not like Rolex*

  • Registered Users Posts: 536 ✭✭✭Shooter_galway

This is the one I'm looking to see if it's real, my gut is fake as there is no bubble around the date, nothing on the back either. FYI belonged to my late father so just looking for info if that's ok mods?

The sea dweller range actually wouldn’t have a bubble on the date.

But sadly fake in either case.

  • Registered Users Posts: 536 ✭✭✭Shooter_galway

Perfect, was assuming so however do you mind me asking how you know it's fake as there is nothing on the back? Apologies as a complete novice when it comes to watches!

Rolex dont make a white dial version of this watch, lump pip popped out, date window misaligned, front printing looks wrong, indices are too thick

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,152 ✭✭✭893bet

Rolex have never made that watch with a white dial configuration. On a closer look there be a million inconsistencies with print/lump plots etc.

Best if you just take a lump hammer to it. Plenty of better and real things to remember your late father by. Sorry if I'm being blunt or insensitive here.

Does anyone have a Seiko SKX007/9 or SRPD going cheap? It's to do some mods on, so I don't care about cosmetic condition, bracelet vs strap etc.

Hi folks, have a few watches I'm looking to sell, just wondering what best place is to advertise or approach and a guide on price,

    First watch is longines l4.720.2

    Second watch is a

VERSACE Apollo Rose Gold Quartz Gents Watch VFI06-0013

Lastly the third watch is theorema Gm 101-8

    Any help or guidance appreciated

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,553 ✭✭✭Fitz II

The longines about 500-600 euro if your lucky.

The Versache maybe 3-400 euro but its a fairly niche watch

theorema maybe 4-600 euro - thats a challenging watch.

You can try adverts, but expect to wait on a buyer. Ebay another good option.

  • Registered Users Posts: 536 ✭✭✭Shooter_galway

Thanks Fitz, would watchfinder be any good or will that just get lowball offers?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,553 ✭✭✭Fitz II

You can try, but I would be surprised if they made an offer, not the usual type of watch they buy. Limited resale market and all that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,814 ✭✭✭micks_address

yeah its interesting... on our belfast trip friend had a breitling with him and he was asking about trade and all places said they wouldnt take as trade but would try and sell for him.. just seems to be rolex, tudor, omega thats interesting to retailers and even at that id say rolex more so than the others

That's pretty much the market now. Outside that range there's little enough movement and lots of stock sitting there. As you noted even a once very desireable brand like Breitling are seen as off piste.

Fitz nailed the prices, though being honest I think he was being kind too. Take the Longines; in sold listings on ebay they run between 250-300, so that's about the height of what a dealer is going to give you and Longines are a recognised brand and that range of watches was a good seller for them. I say was as dress watches are deeply unfashionable at the moment. The other two are going to be an even harder sell, though I suspect the Versace might get the fashion name folks interested. See what they actually sell for on ebay. IMHO that's a very good judge, not dealer prices. It's how I judge the values of my watches. Real value = what can I actually get for one in a week.

Just wondering how would they sell it for him? I was wearing the Pogue in that (horsey) place on the M7 and this was suggested. Naturally I declined at the time.

A lot of places and indeed some fairly big online players offer a sale on consignment service.

They take the watch into their stock, give it a fettle or a clean and then sell it with anything from 6 to 20% of the sale price as their cut.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,814 ✭✭✭micks_address

Yeah we didnt get into specifics but they take... advertise and take a cut of the sale... not sure of the percentages involved..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,553 ✭✭✭Fitz II

If the Timepiece gentleman thing though us anything its that consignment is dangerous. Its a no risk deal for the dealer. They get free stock and none of their money tied up in it. However if they go bust you are SOL.

Watchmaster in Germany are a huge consignment place. And they operate a slick but dangerous scheme. You send the watch. They get any service or polish need. Then they advertise it and sell taking 20% of the sale price minus the cost of service. On a lot of watches you will actually only get about 50-60% of the sale price back. I think in this day and age of ebay and adverts thats a mad bad deal. Pretty much any watch you put on adverts for 40% less than a fair price will be gone in a flash, even those with a more niche appeal.

Another problem with consignment is that you have sent the watch away, its gone from your possession. As far as you are concerned its mentally sold. So when the dealer rings you with a offer 20% less than reasonable you often just accept it cause some money is better than no money. I often put in mad offers on watches on watchmaster and they get accepted. I got my dress Patek on there with a cheeky bid of 5k less than asking price.

What Fitz said. I don't think I've bought or sold from a dealer in over twenty years. Not since the interwebs allowed us to bypass the middle man. Now that's vintage which is very different to new stuff, but too often I've found dealers are full of poo. No way would I go the consignment route that's for sure and for all the good reasons Fitz notes.

Would anyone be interested in a faulty late 1960s Timex Sprite handwound watch to tinker with?

It was working ok, but now it isn't winding properly and only runs for a short time.

Maybe someone is learning how to fix watches? Might be one to mess around with?

Only just seen this now as haven't had a chance to catch up on here lately, thanks for thinking of me @banie01! :)

Have been looking into getting some basic watchmaking tools the last few weeks along with taking a trip to The British Horological Institute for a few days on my week off in October to do a beginner course before going out and buying tools as I may not even have the nack for it!

@NIMAN If the offer is still there, I would be interested as I have to start somewhere ! ;)

At some point in the not too distant future I'd love to pick up a ww2 era pilots watch (40mm+) where would you reccommend buying and researching?

I'm at the cheaper end of the market so I'm guessing it'll be slim pickings

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 60,170 Mod ✭✭✭✭Wibbs

At 40mm+ you've even slimmer pickings I'm afraid B. The vast majority of watches of that era are sub 40mm, even sub 35mm. Above 40mm you're down to the bigger Longines Weems(mad money), German B-Uhr navigator watches(big money and huge 55mm) and the 1930's mostly 40-42mm pilot's watch design made by, well loads of brands. the latter is probably the only game in town at your budget. Zenith example below.

This design was made by Zenith, Omega, Longines, Helvetia, Laco, Doxa and a host of others. The recognisable names today are again likely well out of your budget. The Helvetia ones come up regularly and they're a good bet, though quality varies. Figure 8-1000 quid for a good one.

Thanks for the info, not the news I wanted but pretty much what I expected lol.

I have a few vintage russians around 35/36mm and I just don't wear them due to the size. I'll keep an eye out but at around 1k I think It'll be a long time before I can justify getting one
