Ole's treatment of Donny is worse than Mourinho's treatment of Luke Shaw.

Instead of lying to the kid by telling him he's part of his plans, he should have allowed him go to Everton and play some football.

Ole is ruining the career of one of the most promising technical midfielders in Europe because he has no idea how to use him, and he's doing the same to Jadon Sancho.

Sad to see. Clearly means a lot to him to get his chance. And I feel the players like him based on their reaction. The lads should have been allowed to go on Loan or play .

    Ole really is braindead

Poor Donny was obviously told to go warm up as he was needed to create something in last few minutes……then returns to find Fred ready to go on……shows yet more indecision from Ole and crew over in game team management .

Feel sorry for Donny…in his last few outings he has kept possession far better than either Mc T or Fred are capable of.

Only serious Silver lining that might be in the cloud that is Oles treatment of Donny is that he goes nuclear and demands a Xmas exit and we invest his fee as part of funds for someone like Bissouma or Neves.

Realistically Ndidi or Rice (don’t rate him) would cost too much and probably not move in January but if you got a cheaper decent young CDM in like Bissouma you could then sell likes of Fred and Martial in the Summer to pay for a top class DM like Ndidi.

Even from January on Bissouma or Neves playing alongside an in form Matic or Mc T would solidify the team big time for rest of the Season.

All going well Ole will be gone before Donny and a proper manager will know how to use him or just let him leave if he doesn't fit into his plans. For all the praise Ole has gotten about his man management, the treatment of Donny and previously Rom has been shoddy.

Donny is obviously 5th choice central midfielder in Ole's eyes.

I find the Donny hype train kind of funny to watch, just seems that lads will grasp on to anything to stick the boot into Ole....DvB has shown very little in any game he's played to demand a place in the team,it looks more and more likely to me he wasnt a player the manager wanted and doesnt fit into his plans, rightly or wrongly!

I like the player,I've watched numerous videos on how he could be used effectively by Utd but the reality is he has Pogba,Bruno ahead of him and even Lingard who has become somewhat a supersub in a few games!

Donny the supposed attacking midfielder with 1 goal and 1 assist in over a year or something awful like that, now that people realise he's hopeless going forward there're trying to shoehorn him into midfield!!

Reality is he's done nothing to warrant a starting spot and until that changes Ole is correct to not start him.

Not at all. His first half against YBs and midweek game at West Ham showed what be is capable of producing, which is a level above what Fred or McTominay can do with the ball. Even defensively he was decent, making interceptions and tackles.

McTominay and Pogba were awful on Wednesday night, just plain awful. Yet, they'll be strat back into the starting lineup.

Ole has his favourites and has stated that he has faith in McFred to do a job for him. This is despite ample evidence that neither are anywhere near the level required to move the ball through midfield.

I’d agree with most of that, the only thing that does irk me is why he wasn’t allowed out out on loan. You can’t keep a player like that just for League cup games. But Donny is not the first player in the world to be signed by a club and not used by the manager, so I’m not sure why people are getting so upset about it.

Somebody compared it to Jose and shaw! Jose kept insisting Shaw publicly and basically called shaw a lazy idiot and that Jose had to do all the thinking for him, not exactly the same is it?

Id still love to know why he was signed. Was the expectation that Pogba would be sold? I don’t believe signings are made simply because a manager says they want a player so I don’t know how people confidently lay the blame of signings on a managers door. Particularly at a club that has a predictable history of making stupid and bad signings.

A managers role has changed a lot over the years and their job now is primarily manage the squad they are given . The days of a Barry fry actually negotiating with a player are long gone. There has to be a process with the manager involved to different degrees on different transfers. Donnys signing reminds me a bit like Matas, a quality looking signing for a decent price and very attainable but not necessarily one that the team needs.

When the options being selected ahead of him are a headless chicken (Fred), the invisible man (McTominay), and a want away (Pogba), you have to start asking yourself what the hell is going on.

If Ole doesn't rate Donny that fine but what in the name of jaysus is he looking at when watching those other 3 play.

Honestly I don’t know. I’d like to see more of Donny to see what he can do, it feels like Ole is suffering what a lot of United managers suffer when they don’t want to take many risks with squad and play the same “trusted” players.

when I think of Darren Fletcher I think of McTominey, maybe unfairly or because of similarities. Fletcher was not an exceptional central midfielder, neither was carrick. I remember how much abuse (unfairly) Carrick used to get on RTE for passing the ball sideways and back so much.

He was an extremely reliable central midfielder who helped things transition and tick over but remarkably unremarkable at any one particular trait. Not an exceptional passer , tackler or shot. His passing was good but he wasn’t doing scholes defence splitting passes every week.

I don’t see why Fred or McT can’t be that consistent sort of midfielder. Perhaps it’s down to the balance of the team and the lack of a system many highlight. If a better tactical minded manager came in, why couldn’t these midfielders be as good as Liverpool’s central midfield that seems to be fine regardless of who plays in it.

Surely Ole gave the go ahead to sign him. I feel sorry for the lad as he's wasting his career away by staying.

Wherever you think DVB fits on the Djemba-Djemba to Scholes scale regarding ability there is absolutely no reason he should be in the squad just as a non-playing team mascot.

Whatever meagre minutes he gets could just be allocated to Hannibal (in addition to his reserve minutes.)

Can you point to anywhere in his Utd career where he has had more than 3 Matich starts in a row? Even 2 for that matter.

    I will wait...

Two of the three ahead of him can sign for another club in January on a free and have shown no inclination to sign a new contract yet they get playing time. Top man management alright, play the lads who want to leave and alienate the player you'll be left with. Sweet.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 43,004 Mod ✭✭✭✭Lord TSC

I feel as if DVB was brought in as a backup for Bruno, and because it was felt Pogba was going. And then Ole became a manager who never rests Bruno, and plays Pogba whenever possible (despite the contract situation). So we don't need a rotation option. We never rotate.

As pjohnson says, we could give that time to kids instead. We could have shifted Donny in the summer window if Ole had no plans for him. If there's reasons not to play him, fair enough, I'll trust the coaching team's judgement to an extent. I just don't understand why we keep him hanging round then. Just makes the situation more stupid.

Agreed that the system we play doesn't help the midfield. However, Fred and McTominay don't have the football IQ to play the way Carrick did. They just can't move the ball quickly and will often play the wrong ball. I just don't see any scenario where they step up and play the type of technical tlrole required in midfield to transition the ball quickly either from back to front or side to side.

I just don't have the time but would you keep playing a player who provides very little? We've lost 3 games in the last 2 weeks and he started 2 of those.

He thinks of himself as an attacking midfielder so unless he starts scoring or even being involved in goals then he doesn't warrant getting into the first team.

I can’t wait for the the day that Pogba is gone from the club. He’s wanted to leave the club for years and he has proven to be largely unreliable despite being played in half the positions on the pitch in an attempt to get the best out of him.

let him fcuk off to PSG or wherever and Utd can move forward with the players who want to play for the club.

also a new manager would be nice but I feel that won’t be happening anytime soon.

Donny situation is a hard one, like it's impossible to know if he will work if he néver plays, but there is a chance he isn't good enough, but also the chance the manager doesn't know how to use him effectively (my guess)

Given his reaction in the last game he certainly feels he is good enough, and Ole has said himself he promised him much more game time so can see why he would be pissed off.

We kept romero for an extra season for no reason last year, which was poor out of the club and this donny situation is poor also given what he was promised.

Also if ole didn't think he needed or wanted dvb he should have said so and said what he did need, ole receives a lot of praise for his squad building but I'm dubious how much input he actually has.

And tbf I wouldn't really praise the squad building as the transfers still feel very much unplanned, even looking at Telles and AWB what system where does 2 signed for.

Ronaldo and cavaini certainly aren't both needed but I know Ronaldo was last minute as was cavaini the tear before, we are missing out on greenwood getting experience there also.

TLDR club is still a mess from The top down players are better though

Are we counting Young Boys there? That's harsh on Donny. He was doing fine until he got taken off as a result of the red card.

Maybe they aren’t good enough but I think they may suffer because of Oles limitations.

I was thinking there about teams under Ferguson. I’m fairly sure John O shea played central midfield a couple of times and remember fletcher and Carrick (and others ) playing centre back. I think those two might of actually played as our central defence in one game (was it against Fulham?). I think Ferguson was able to do that regularly , play players in different positions without massive drop in standards.

I mean Park had some engine on him but he wasn’t the worlds best central midfielder. This ties in with the complaints against Ole that he has no identifiable team system that the makes things work. You can play in a way where McT and Fred do a job that is enough for the team.

Actually reminds me that uniteds transfer and squad building issues didn’t just start in 2013 it’s just that SAF was far superior at papering over the cracks.

I think you can’t paper over Oles deficiencies but it’s hard to not look at the squad and see it as unbalanced. It’s kind of like a half galactico hybrid without the Makele to protect the defence. This is why the DM role is so important, you nearly need a Kante level type player if you are going to have 4-5 attacking players further up the park. Otherwise you need 2 solid central midfielders.

What is a shame is that, Ole or not, it does look like one really top DM and the team will definitely challange at the top.

Ole, for me, needs to start dropping and rotating under performing players. Greenwood’s been poor, Rooney had to work hard out the wing so don’t want to hear any nonsense about how the youngster should be facilitated anywhere else. Put your head down, work hard and just do your job.

Bruno is a funny one, hard to have him rested or dropped , he works so hard in fairness but sometimes feels like games are passing him by. But like Ronaldo, Bruno can make something out of nothing.

The elephant in the room is Pogba. I think of him kind of like Ruud in his final season. Ruud was the best out and out striker I ever saw at United, just lethal. But in his final year , saf wanted to change how the team played, build it around Ronaldo but also Saha. I remember the league cup final where United were superb with Saha leading the line and they looked more like a great team.

it wasn’t that Ruud wasn’t exceptional player, he was and he was by far our best striker. But when he played he had to be the focal point and the team “suffered” or was limited in how it could play. I think shoehorning Pogba (who is top quality when he performs) has been a problem for Ole and Jose. It’s not actually the managers fault IMO as neither were allowed to offload the player.

The player was looking for a move since 2017, it’s not that the club couldn’t possibly of sold him. But this doesn’t look on paper like something a United manager should get sympathy for. “Oh poor Jose/Ole having to figure out how to fit a world class central midfielder into their team”. Same thing happens with Moyes and Mata and it’s a reaccuring theme at the club that’s easy to dismiss.

Performance doesn't matter with Donny, it's the results it seems, which is harsh given that most of his starts are in lesser cups with a team thrown together. He was good against YBs and good against West Ham in the cup.

I do think some of the criticism of Ole re him the last night is over the top though. I'm fairly sure he was going on (and not being messed around with) until Telles had to come off. Fred filing in LB made much more sense. But in general, Donny has every reason to be frustrated imo.

I don't know how some people think Sancho is being treated the same way. It's the opposite, he's being played regardless of performance and has been given a real chance. The big similarity between both is that they don't suit Ole's style of play imo, both prefer passing and moving.

Maybe Donny was too cheap, add another 20M onto his price and there's probably a lot more pressure to play him.

But ultimately he's not a player that suits Ole's style and I would be glad for him to get a move away from him.

I mean, they could do a job when we pack the midfield and keep things tight. This papers over the huge cracks in both of their games though. Matic has a far better footballing brain but doesn't have the pace. Look at how Matic steps back into defense to make a back three when we have the ball. That never occurs to Fred or McTominay and they are constantly caught in no man's land. There is an element of poor coaching and systems here but that's really midfield 101 play right there. Also, no system is going to make either pass the ball batter. They just aren't very good.

You make a really good point about making the players suit the system rather than relying on vibes. I looked at greenwood on Wednesday and he must have been told to not track back. Otherwise he would surely have been hauled off. When our fullbacks overlap the wide players don't cover for them. They just drift centrally and leave huge gaps. That is a system failure again.

In fact, everything about how Ole sets up his teams makes very little sense. Against Villarreal it was clear after 5 minutes that McTominay was a lone figure in the central midfield. Which, they copped on to and just played straight through the middle with acres of space to then flood our right-hand side. Dalot got no protection from his winger or midfield because they were clearly told not to cover. Some will say Greenwood was lazy and should have been covering and I agree he absolutely should have been bit if he was completely ignoring a managers instructions he should have been hauled off.

Bruno has played like a drain since late last season. The odd assist or goal is not covering the fact that his all round game has regressed. Why? Well I think having him and Pogba pushed up so high makes both of them worse and kills any space for the other attackers. It also makes us incredibly easy to defend against and to counter. Especially when McFred are so slow to move the ball and tend to get caught on the ball or give it away very cheaply in terrible positions.

"Well, yeah, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"

I think VDB is being to treated unfairly, does not seem to get a run of games at all and only gets a very rare start and then sometimes he gets the last 10 mins of a game. This is where I think Ole coaching is also called in question, you have a player who we know can keep a ball moving & keep it flowing whereas you don't know what version of McFred your going to get. Ole is to afraid to lose a game which sometimes hinder his chance to win a game.

Pogba & Lingard can speak to clubs "officially" in 2 months so come the very first week of Jan we could be about to lose those 2 and DVB if he requests a transfer then we are back to screaming for more midfielders while Haaland will be on the move also so money be tight.

Dalot wasnt over lapping at all against villareal it took me a half to figure out what he was doing but he was slotting into midfield in a 2 2 5 1 type system when we were attacking. (not exactly as telles pogba and Bruno were in many areas at different times)

Something I actually thought should have been tried with AWB at some stage but surprised they did it with dalot.

Anywyas looked like the players on the right had no idea what they were doing, and dalot had an awful game in the end, hr probably left mct too Much as he himself was getting roasted on the right with no help.

Needles to say whatever they were at didn't work and the players didn't look comfortable.
