Similar performance to Saturday, outplayed for large parts of the game, look defensively vulnerable (and nervous). Took a moment of pure quality to drag us back into the game and the sheer cunning of Ronnie (the knock down to Lingard and his anticipation) to steal a win!

Feels like Ole dodged a bullet there (as he has had a habit of doing). Really need a much improved performance against Everton on Saturday before heading into the international break.

As an aside, anyone know if/when additional tickets for Atalanta home are likely to go on sale?

When can we expect Shaw and Rashford back?

In fairness. he brought on a third CM for the more advanced Mount that day and Chelsea looked better in both a defensive and attacking sense after that change. I'm pretty sure Ole would not have done the same at HT. He has brought on Matic for what would be considered a more forward thinking player late in the game a few times in recent weeks and it worked on more than one occasion. More evidence to me that a more balanced team can be more productive than a disjointed unbalanced one.

I've watched that winner 10+ times now, still can't get over that assist from Lingard. It's one of the best I've seen lately, he worked very hard for it.

Clean as a whistle, he beat 2 desperate defenders for that touch and barely made contact with either of them before he got to the ball. VAR did their very best to steal the headlines, they tossed and turned over that replay, but Lingard gave them nothing.

Finally...Jesse bracing and curling up on the ground as if a bomb's about to go off after making the touch was priceless.

I'm happy for Jesse, surely 2021 has been his best year of football yet.

Lingard played a massive part in that goal. I’ve been a big detractor of him in the past but credit where it’s due. His work rate and desire can never be faulted.

pogba could do with taking a leaf out of his book.

I think Ole massively underestimated Villareals ambition last night and it took him a long time to adjust.

If only we'd had the chance to play them quite recently in a very important game, would have given us a good chance to scope them out, learn their strengths and weaknesses, and plan our tactics against them...

In fairness, I think his assumption of their attacking intent may have been based off that game where their only shot on target was their goal.

Context: I'm an Ole fan and a Pogba fan who thinks a lot of people get hysterical fast.

Last night was the low point for me in my support of Ole. The 1st team choice excited me; I wanted to see if Ole could impress a system on his players, specifically Pogba that would see us disciplined in the middle of the park, allow our attacking talent show their value and see if our FB's could provide competition for the incumbents.

No to all that. It's not clear what tactical training is really being done between matches but the vaccuum in the middle of the park which McT alone couldn't deal with, the indiscipline of Dalot (which is a shame, I really think there's a player there) and the congestion up top as a result of Pogba's spatial drifting was infuriating. Our CB's were exposed so often and so easily. I feel sorry for them.

Credit to Ole here: he made changes that affected the game and turned it our way, which is something you can rarely say. Matic showed why we need a good DM on the pitch at all times. Fred showed the value of a player understanding his role and committing to it, even if it's not his "natural" game (John O'Shea would have been proud). Cavani showed why he is still world class. Lingard showed how important hard work is.

I feel sorry for VDB. I think he'd have done well yesterday with McT. Them as a pair I think could work, provided they stick to their detail. As talented as he is, Pogba's never going to do anything other than what he always does. When he plays on the left, great. Play him as a 10 occasionally: super. Play him as a CM with holding responsibilities and watch the gaps open up.

I love Ole and think he's one so much good for the club but the coaching of this squad is abysmal. The same problems recur and nothing seems to be done about them. I've previously given Ole the benefit of the doubt and questioned what Phelan, Carrick et al do but f**k that now: he's in charge. He might not be responsible for developing the tactical detail or giving it to the players but he's responsible for those who are and he hasn't done anything about it for too long. Move him to DOF if that's what his strengths are.

United looked far better when Pogba went off for Matic. Not blaming Pogba , I just think like you say the team is too unbalanced trying to accompany so many forward minded players. Dropping or rotating One of these attacking players out may be the making of the team and Oles salvation. Pogba may be the one to pay , unless they got 4-1-2-3 with Pogba and Bruno centrally ahead of a DM but it seems to leave the 1 DM exposed. Not much benefit to playing Pogba deeper beside that 1. Bruno probably would work harder and be better defensively but nobody wants that.

Utd are extremely lucky Gerard Moreno was missing last night. I've no doubt he'd have take the chances they created or it would have been a different story this morning. I'm genuinely worried about the return game and the two Atalanta games.

At least this morning the media are mainly calling it for what it was, getting out of jail, rather than a great comeback and questions are being asked of OGS's tactical nous (or lack thereof) by guys who've been pretty much cheerleading in the past. Even guys like ultra optimist Andy Mitten are now asking questions.

I think it may be the best assist of 2021. Sure Bruno/Pogba have had some great defence splitting balls but the speed at which Lingard made those 3 or 4 decisions to set up Ronaldo was amazing.

I was wondering this, though he was only offside because I think he was fouled while laying off the ball.

Yeah I think that's it - similar as to what happened at the weekend with Watkins. Both goals stood in the end, which is probably the right decision for me. Sometimes those technicalities can be too particular or anal, for want of a better word. If the player is directly in the line of the goalkeepers sight and directly affecting the keeper's vision, or an action such as a dummy or the ball going under the attackers legs leaving the keeper blindsided, then the goal should be ruled out fair enough. But just having any part of the attackers body in front of any part of the goalkeepers body is not the same thing and the goal should stand.

Ole complained about the Watkins one, but ignored this one when they were very similar. Both keepers were not directly having their vision blocked, while there was some 'interference' from a player in an offside position, technically. Can't have it both ways!

Isn't Woodie out the door shortly?

    Yep

He'd go up in my estimation if he gave us Conte or Poch as a parting gift

Scott is the weak-link in the McFred portmanteau, especially since it's Fred who is scape-goated . I think Matic alongside Fred would be a lot better balanced as it would combine the energy levels of Fred with the nous of Matic. It looks a lot less likely to happen, but DVB could be an replacement for the former if they want more control, and the latter if he/when he gets tired. Hiding in plain sight.

Lingard also nearly scored off the bench. So a good chance and an assist by making simple front post runs from the 88th minute. Were Sancho/Pogba even in the box the whole game? (hyperbolic I know)

Very surprised at his improvement on the wing. I think it really was just confidence with him in that he wasn't taking risks like he once did and making those smart runs off the ball. I'm probably one of the few who thought he was doing okay at the tippy tappy stuff around the box but would then not take a shot or make the run to top it off.

There's a reason every manager he's played under bar the current one has found a use for him and love his attitude. How many times would he have been useful last season and not used should be another stick to beat Ole with.

De Gea was touching Watkins at the weekend and was clearly being somewhat hamstrung by his presence. The two incidents are nothing alike.

I also think it may have been a penalty if not given but not watched that closely.

Pogba was muck last night. I loved Cavanis work rate. Constantly hassling and tracking the opposition. It's exactly what we need in the 1st half. They could take a note out of Liverpools style of play. Fergie used to a big advocate of good workrate.

I actually agree that Fred is a better asset to the team than Scott but Matic and Fred has been tried and it has failed anytime it has been tried tbh, it puts Fred on the right side of the centre mid as Matic can't go there and he's just horrific there. Its like when Lindelor has to play left sided centre back, it just doesn't work unfortunately.

Maybe if we had a younger Matic, who knows. I actually liked Matic & Donny together. I think Donny would also make a good partner for either of the two mainstays but not sure we will ever get to see it in anything other than flashes.

When he did see game time last season he had very little impact so it's harsh to add his underuse as another stick to beat Ole with. He was so poor that the vast majority of the fanbase wanted him as far away from the team as possible. I know you've been a strong champion of him over the years and I've always been clear that I believe he could be a valuable part of our squad but his upturn in form is not as simple as Ole deciding he should starting using him all of a sudden.

I know, it's almost as if Ole is the manager of one team and not the other. 😱

Also, the 2 incidents are nothing alike.

If you watch the reply of Ronaldo's goal Rulli has his hands out by his side ready to dive but he them moves his hands up as he think Lingard is going to crash into him before he hits the deck, Just as he does that the ball falls to Ronaldo who shoots & scores,

The split second Linguard caused him to put his hand up to almost catch Linguard cost him saving the shot , but Ronaldo was split second away from kicking the ball so i don't know what u do there

You can't really see it from the original view u can see it in the link below

You wins some you lose some i guess ,

True - and they saw from that game that they gave us too much respect and that we're tactically inept and naively managed, so why not play more attacking against us this time?

There's really no point discussing Donny as part of any combination. He doesn't fit into Ole's plan for the way he wants to play. It's as simple and brutal as that.

The only way he gets in is if Ole takes heed of the criticism and tries to play some football in the middle channel.

I actually think all our midfielders are getting a raw deal to varying degrees due to the way we play.

That's not what happened at all actually.

Id suggest watching it again, a few times I suppose.

Even just head to around the 2 minute 30 mark of that video. What you said is completely wrong.

See, what happened was - Lingard impeded the goalkeeper by diving into him and making sure he wouldn't be able to save the shot at all, he went out of his way to dive in front of the keeper so that the keeper had to alter his positioning, not cause he was beaten by Lingards assist of course, but because Jesse launched himself like a torpedo at him.

Lingard should probably be suspended for a couple of games and United docked the 3 points.

Or, same as the weekend the goal was fine. Not sure.

In reality the keeper doesn't actually alter his positioning because of Lingards body, he does try to adjust of course because Lingards touch went right to Ronaldo who was about to shoot so being a goalkeeper he tried to adjust to make a save.

Which games were they? He only made 6 appearances last season for United. Got a load of goals from January to the end of the season. Are you suggesting that moving him to a different place changed his ability because from what I can see it was simply actually playing him.
