Par on his last hole the 9th and he's in next week, Great run he's on recently

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,945 ✭✭✭The Big Easy

Hardest hole on the course, but he's playing the golf of his life and has gone from not quite having it when necessary to pulling out the goods when the heat is on, so fingers crossed.

48ft to hole but on left fairway. Must be on the fringe or run off area.

Van Royan quad bogey throws Seamus a lifeline

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,945 ✭✭✭The Big Easy

Looks like it, the only chance is a complete Hoge collapse, but that looks unlikely.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,788 ✭✭✭Ottoman_1000

    Disaster.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,945 ✭✭✭The Big Easy

He still needs to drop a couple more but after a quad, it's possible I suppose!

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,781 ✭✭✭Motivator

What a total sickener this is. Still has a very outside chance depending on others dropping shots but I’d say the chance is gone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 347 ✭✭Scrabbel

Would Mitchell’s move have edged him out anyway?

being honest he's had an important year and sorted himself with the exemption and PGA pension and was very unlikely to do something amazing when the full field of top golfers is present and correct.

he's a great golfer but not top 50 in the world.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,708 ✭✭✭Speak Now

Yeah dropped to 72nd, Mitchell birdied last 3.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,490 ✭✭✭✭coylemj

Pity, would have been a great end to the season to make the BMW but he can be very happy with what he's achieved. Good luck to Seamus in 21/22.

His interview was class as always. Even in disappointment he was still so chilled and cest la vie. Hard to be too disappointed with the year he has had

It’s a good thing he missed the putt on his last hole. I think if he made it he would have finished 71st and missed out on the BMW by something like .4 of a point. Now that really would have been a sickener.

Overall, what a last 5 months for Seamus it’s hard to be too disappointed all things considered. In the spring we were all just hoping he would make a cut to get a few quid together and boost his points. The win seems ages ago now but the new season won’t be long starting. Hopefully he can push on again next year safe in the knowledge that he’s not under immense pressure every week to perform well. He can almost freewheel through the year and look forward to the big tournaments and of course his first major. Top class guy and I’m so delighted for him.

Wouldn't be surprised if he wins one of those early season wrap around events before the top guys get going again.

Think he could have a big year, there's certainly more regular tour wins in him and who knows what else, if you're not in.........

Hope to see him on the European Tour over the next few weeks now that he is free from PGA Tour, surely he will get some invites?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,945 ✭✭✭The Big Easy

Just did the maths there (because I'm avoiding work), he would've missed it by 3 points, incredible and I'm sure someone will tell him and he'll be a little less disappointed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,945 ✭✭✭The Big Easy

I'd say he'll take a good break and get ready for the new season which starts again just before the Ryder Cup on September 13, another win and he could get himself into the WGCs and the rest of the majors. he'll want to hit the ground running now he's healthy, playing well and free from pressure.

The new PGA season starts in 3 weeks, the week before the Ryder Cup 😄

He's had a great season culminating in the win. There are so many players who never make it when they turn professional, never mind actually winning a tournament so a great achievement for him. Hopefully its the start of something big for Seamus. Even this week when by his own admission he didn't have his A game he still finished in the top 40 in a top class field. So with none of the pressure that he's had to deal with this year, with him being able to set out and plan his itinerary for the year and not worry about qualifiers etc. and with the confidence he will have gained this year, next season could be an even bigger year for Seamus. Here's hoping.

He will definitely be home for the Irish open next year as the win means he is exempt through to 2023, likely to play more than one event in that time hopefully.

With no pressure in terms of status for the next 2 years, I think he could force his way into the top 50 in the world. When a chance pops up of being in contention on the back 9, he will not be thinking of trying to get as many fedex cup points as possible and can simply think of winning.

2 core players of this years Ryder Cup team; Matt Fitzpatrick & Hatton also missed out on top 70 to put into perspective the level he reached this year with no players championship, no world golf events, etc unlike those 2 players.

Let's not get carried away with ourselves. Outside Ireland, he is a relative unknown and represents no value whatsoever (as an invitee) to tournament sponsors in mainland Europe. And the European Tour won't be too inclined to give away any slots at the end of the season when you have lots of local players scrambling for their 2022 tour card.

Turns out he'd have needed a birdie on the last to qualify for next week. Still a great season for him.

Any one know what his schedule for the next season is?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,945 ✭✭✭The Big Easy

I doubt Seamus knows yet 🤪

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,778 ✭✭✭Trampas

Season starts next week so I assume he has an idea. I’d like to see him play as much as he can and get out there early. Get a good footing on the points list

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,945 ✭✭✭The Big Easy

Fair, but I don't think he'll know much beyond this wraparound part of the season and the tournament of champions in January (I presume his win gets him in that?).

His schedule is still going to be heavily dependent upon his OWGR and whether he can get in the top 50 before next season proper starts (big ask but I'd say it's what he's aiming for)

Spoke at an event in Dunmore today. Seems a wicked nice fella.

As far as I know, Seamus plans on getting 6 or 7 tournaments played before the end of November. His first start is the last week of September.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,776 ✭✭✭abff

I'm surprised that Seamus has decided to give this week's tournament a miss. With all the Ryder Cup players missing apart from Rahm, it would have been an ideal opportunity to kickstart his season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,029 ✭✭✭paulos53

He has played this event 4 times previously and missed the cut each time. He now has the luxury of being able to miss events on courses that don't suit him

Seamus kicks off his season tomorrow at the Sanderson Farms. Very interesting to see how he gets on here, it’s the start of a busy stretch for him so fingers crossed.

Hopefully he gets off to a flier, was most impressed with his form during the summer. Had finally sorted out Sunday afternoon issues, keep the hammer down and press on because his talent merits it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,781 ✭✭✭Motivator

It’s very hard to know what kind of a start he will get off to. He was back in Ireland for a couple of weeks and is only back in the states maybe the last 10 days or so. He was playing golf in Ireland (albeit with his buddies) so it’s not like he was away from a club completely. He was in such good form hopefully he picks up where he left off and the biggest thing is he has going for him is this season is essentially a free hit. He has no pressure on him so he can go out and play unrestricted. Best of luck to him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,099 ✭✭✭✭Mantis Toboggan

When you say this year is a free hit for him does that mean finishing in the top 125 is irrelevant and won't affect his card for next season?

Yeah his card is secured through the end of 2023 regardless of results for this season. Hopefully his card won't be something he needs to think about again for a long number of years. The next step is a win in a full PGA Tour event, maybe this week, you never know!

No, not really, it was the same week as the Open, so was a reduced prize pool and doesn't carry the same exemptions (mostly but not the Masters if an opposite field event). It was also worth less Fed Ex Cup points than a regular tournament. It still carried the same two-year exemption for the Tour.

I'm open to correction on the Masters qualification, but Seamus has time to get into the top 50 before then and maybe win a full tournament before the cut off.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,781 ✭✭✭Motivator

Yes to qualify for Augusta he will need to either win a full event or be inside the top 50 in the world rankings.

This season will be a whole different ball game for Seamus. It’s the first team he can really gamble and take chances without looking over his shoulder every week. It’s also the first time he can really plan out his season. Gone are the days where he’s had to play a course that he knows doesn’t suit him but he has to play anyway in the hope he gets lucky. The pressure is really off and he can just go and enjoy himself now. God knows what that could do for his confidence. He knows he’s good enough and the win has shown others that he’s good enough to do it.

birdied 3 of the 4 par 5's which is great.Paddy and Shane so often don't get their fair share of birdies on par 5's and it really puts you at a severe disadvantage to rest of field if you are not getting getting your share .Just checked PGA stats and Shane below num 130 for scoring on par 5s for year 2021.Hard to believe with his short game his scoring average on par 5s isnt better.
