I hope the opposite. A Finua choke and not having to look at that annoying ear cupping to the drunk hillbillies.

Only for Lowry holed that putt at the last Europe would be heading into the singles with 10 of the team not having won a match 😬

Hopefully the last time we see Casey, Westwood and Poulter. If we need any of these in 2 years then European golf is well and truly f**ked.

Danny Willetts brothers comments from 2016 come to mind.

It should have been said to him by Paddy or someone else, he only has his son carrying for him for his son's benefit (he's spoken before about how much fun it is and how he had promised his son he could caddy in Augusta). That's not really great in a team environment when you're not putting winning and the team first.

I think it's a bit late putting Rors out first now once his confidence has truly been shattered, but maybe he can dig deep within himself and pull out some good golf.

I was a big advocate for putting him out first on the first morning to try and jump start his confidence, now it's a complete shot in the dark, but here's hoping for a green wave to start things off!

Harrington has actually been very clever.

The US would have assumed the EU would send out Jon Rahm 1st soo they (US) kind of accepted defeat in the 1st match and sent out a sacrificial lamb....and loaded their best players further down the field.

But whats happened now is that Europe could conceivably win the first 4 games.... and will probably still be in this till about the 9th or 10th match.

Some sacrificial lamb, Xander's been one of the best players in the world for a number of years and is undoubtedly one of the US' best players.

He should have a major or two already and after winning the Olympics he'll probably win a couple over the next few years.

Just be careful of this if betting.

While they may play out the matches, once the competition is over so is the real competition between golfers. So you may find a few gentleman agreements towards the latter games to end them in halves if the games are tight coming to last couple holes.

Not alone here. A 7&6 or so would be nice. Hopefully the last time we see him in the RC.

Exactly. The analysis of matches where people are saying some players have no chance is farcical. Any of the 12 can beat any of the others on a given day.

Yeah, i mean i don't think any of the American team could be considered sacrificial lambs against anyone. But XS would not be near the top of the list in any case.

That was disgraceful from Westwood, imo he didn't really give a fk, wasn't worried whether he qualified or was picked.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,322 ✭✭✭The Big Easy

Yeah, there's a scenario where the US could win all 12 and also where Europe could win all 12. Neither are going to happen but they're both possible. The list of pairings actually looks encouraging for Europe and has probably fallen as kindly as it could've but to win 9 from 12 is just too big an ask.

Would fancy Bernd to give Brooks a fright though.

Ah come on. Whom a player picks or does not pick as his caddy is nowhere near a disgrace.

Would agree, it's been his form for the last few years in majors, be out of contention after the 1st 2 days, when the pressure is off he starts playing well.

It's a shot to nothing putting him out 1st, could work out.

Harrington has made some bad decisions but dropping him wasn't one of them,. McGinley should apologise for his comments.

What did Paul say? Something specific about Paddy or Rory?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,768 ✭✭✭Xander10

I can't help you there. McGinley is one of the most boring bland people on Sky, I tune out whenever he speaks.

In a nutshell, the US are deep, we are not as deep but Rory has let the team down badly, Poults and Westy would have got on a lot better if their partners turned up.

    Here's hoping for a miracle

The overall strength of the US team combined with the lack of depth and poor form of many players in the European team has lead to this big lead.

harrington and his team have definitely made a few errors in pairings but his players have let him down too. None more so than Rory. But Europe also had some chances in many matches going into the back 9 and faltered. Should definitely be a bit closer.

Would love if Europe could make it some it interesting by getting 4 or so points from first 5 games and then let the likes of Casey, poulter and Westwood get hammered. Poulter was giving it all on social media the last two weeks and hasn’t backed it up. Same with Westwood, just happy to be there.

I’ll go for a 17-11 final score. Maybe a fight between Hatton and JT too

God help us if the US go out and win the first 4 matches, Bryson in match 4 securing the Ryder Cup would be insufferable

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,207 ✭✭✭durkadurka

Reasons for probable European defeat in order

    1. Massive gulf in class
    2. Home advantage
    3. Poor performance from top guys and vets
    4. Pairings choices

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,785 ✭✭✭✭lawred2

I can see Johnson getting the deciding points.

And I wouldn't mind that at all. He's been excellent. Plus all the "old man" of the group talk was really annoying

He is not. He is absolutely awful and insults the intelligence of golf fans almost every time he appears on Sly Sports.

I still haven’t got over the fact that he named Justin Thomas as a “dark horse” and “one to watch out for” after the 2018 Ryder Cup. The same Justin Thomas that won 5 or 6 tournaments the year before, including the PGA Championship. McGinley was a very average golfer who landed a plum draw as captain for the 2014 Ryder Cup and has been milking it ever since.

No question I and everyone else would do the same in his position. But he’s an asshole in a personal capacity as well as being totally insufferable in his now professional capacity.

Thomas v Hatton - can they both lose ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,191 ✭✭✭Barnaboy

JT isn't the worst. But Hatton is insufferable. Go JT!
