"Rian Keogh was paid €355 in five cent coins by Alfie’s Restaurant in Dublin city centre this week, a number of weeks after the student finished working for the establishment.

Keogh said he was waiting for his final pay before Alfie’s owner Niall McMahon told him it was ready to be collected at the premises on South William Street.

When he arrived to get the money, the third year UCD student said he was taken aback to find that the money was being paid entirely in five cent coins in a large bucket, amounting to around 7,100 coins. "

The guy had to take a Luas home with 30 f*ing kilos of coins. No matter what kind of Hugo Boss suit you are wearing that's going to suck

I've seen screenshots referring to them doing the same to someone else a year or two earlier. Possibly to be a smartar$e way of giving two fingers to people who hand in their notice?

It seems to have backfired, I've seen numerous sources sharing tales of them serving canned canned Guinness, Lidl wine being served at a 9x markup and so on. Also tales of them allegedly making prospective staff work a full week for free as a trial. I'm not sure "there is no such thing as bad publicity" applies here.

Under what law is it not legal? Are you confusing it with the law that you are not OBLIGED to accept payment of over 50 coins? It seems that the student accepted the payment. Although he probably a) didn't realise he wasn't obliged or b) didn't wanna wait another few weeks for payment.

There's no doubting there's more to this story than being let on but the employer seems quite the petulant, childish and pathetic sort, some seem to think this establishment might gain from the publicity, I'd doubt that very much, its kind of Ironic given the much publicised shortage of staffing in hospitality, this will no doubt NOT assist this employer who clearly has quite a contemptuous approach to it's staff. I care not what the issue was behind the scenes, this behaviour is quite disgraceful.

I'd be curious to know also if this establishment is a member of the Restaurant Association of Ireland, you know the organisation that's been bleating on for the past few months about staffing shortages and how excited and thrilled 100's of thousands of staff we're to be returning to establishments like the aforementioned 🙄🙄🙄

The apparently international DJ who works there tried to justify it. The poor lad had a right to quit.

Had a creep through the DJ Gary Touhy's precious tweets and he seems to be a tool. Like if it's OK for him to self identify as an "International DJ", why is it not OK for someone to identify as non-binary ?

Resturants usually do not have an issue with coin, unlike pubs ( too little) and chippers( too much coin). In most resturants they get most of the coin they give out back as tips so they recycle it. As well if you pay say in all 50 cent pieces, or euro coins he will end up with a lot of the one coin which can be slow to get rid of

If U was getting a lot of cash in I would be inclined to pay my employees in cash too. You still have to give them a wage slip and account for there tax. It costs 2 euro/ 100 to lodge or withdraw notes from a business account.

If you had 10 employees being paid a total of 5k/ week paying in cash would save you 100/ week in lodgement charges. Most businesses do not do it as there is a risk of the money being robbed.
