3 place grid drop for Verstappen

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,375 ✭✭✭chicorytip

I think the right rear wheel of the Red Bull would not have hit the head of Hamilton in any event given his sitting position in the cockpit, Halo or not. It was the engine cover of the Merc that bore the major impact and, given the structural integrity of the cars this would not collapse even given the weight of another vehicle landing on top of it. It was a relatively low speed incident which looked worse than it was. Hamilton was even attempting to reverse out from underneath.

That's utter nonsense. Total nonsense. Lewis puts max in the wall at 150 mph and gets a 10 second penalty and still wins.

    This is BS.

How can the FIA give a 3 place penalty for that and a 10 second one for the Silverstone 51G crash? Utter shambles.

Sky now ragging max for not checking if Lewis was OK completely forgetting about Lewis celebrating in Silverstone while Max was in hospital

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,178 ✭✭✭✭Frank Bullitt

Sky raging all day now cause their golden boy crashed. Hamilton was trying to reverse the car when Max was getting out of his for **** sake.

Can't give a time penalty to a car that didn't finish the race.

Likewise Hamilton probably would of got a grid drop if he also crashed out during the Silverstone incident.

    Can Red Bull appeal?

I take it you didn't actually see the incident itself or any of the photos of the tyre on top of the halo.

Yes but rare that these decisions get overturned.

I guess they had to do something to be consistent. Thinking about it now, 3 places isn't that harsh at all, and probably won't be much of a factor if RB have pace in Russia.

Well if he’s taking the three place drop might as well take the new engine/parts penalty too at the next races

I think Max was always going to take the new engine penalty at Sochi. It's a track Red Bull are usually poor at so this penalty matters not a jot.

The worst part of it is that Hill and Herbert will feel vindicated with their utter drivel of analysis.

5 place for the engine and additional places for other parts (excluding those needed for the new engine itself)

Might be wise to take the pen now! Starting 7th won’t have a much worse impact than 3rd if HAM is on pole! (Presuming Max gets pole)

Personal opinion is racing incident and move on. HOWEVER, 3 place is actually lenient. Remember Bottas and Stroll got a 5 place each.

    This too shall pass.

They certainly do, I think I lasted longer watching Sky than others but I switched it off to avoid watching their glee - not before Hill said he thinks Max did it on purpose again but not intentionally (don't quote me on that)

That's a misleading image. The main point of impact was the engine cover of the Merc. If that were the exact position where Hamilton's head was he could have suffered injury - without the Halo, that is. The Red Bull finished up at a slight left pointing angle, three wheels on the ground. You saw Hamilton attempting to reverse out from underneath. The Halo is designed to protect drivers from flying debris or striking stationary objects and certainly is effective in that regard but not completely so. The incident that resulted in the death of Senna, for instance. It's unlikely a Halo would have prevented that particular injury but that occurred as a result of bad engineering and poor construction - compared to the standards of today.

Yeah you'd imagine red bull and max will change out whatever they can and start at the back of the grid.

Halo saved Hamilton today no doubt. Another vindication for it. But as great as it is, it can’t stop people spouting shite.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,681 ✭✭✭✭flazio

It's not misleading at all, look at the green aero flap above the crowdstrike logo to the left of picture. It's broken and the tyre is pressing on the Halo. No Halo that's heading down onto Lewis.

Not too dissimilar pre Halo incident here.

    This too shall pass.

The 2 points could be very decisive at the end of the season.

My 2 cents is that Max was slightly more at fault, he has a tendency to charge into duels like that, though he has calmed down a lot in the last couple of years. But overall to me it's a standard racing incident between two drivers who weren't going to give each other space because of their position in the championship.

The punishment becomes harsh when you look at the incident in Silverstone. The punishments are not proportionate.

I don't get why people are complaining that Max didn't ask Lewis how he was, Lewis was obviously OK as he was trying to reverse out of there.

I also think that the decision may well have been influenced by comments that the stewards heard on Sky. If it was Italian or German TV commenting they wouldn't pick it up, but they would pick up an english language one easily enough.

Next question is if Lewis is OK, a god whack on the back or head can take a good few hours to start troubling them. He might not experience pain walking around, but once he's back in the car and hitting major G-forces then it could come back. Anyway he has the best part of 2 weeks to recover.

The last few races could be very saucy, maybe a replay of Senna v Prost?

Utterly disgraceful that Max gets a penalty for going for a gap when Lewis turned in on him while the cars were side by side (rear whee hit rear wheel), while Lewis was allowed to win at Silverstone after Max was comfortably ahead and still left loads of room and Lewis chose to drift out into him anyway with his front wheel into Max’s rear.

Between the mid season rule changes to put a stop to any areas where Red Bull have an advantage, and decisions like the stopping of races to allow Lewis to unlap himself when he crashes out, it gets harder and harder to take the sport seriously.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,015 ✭✭✭Captain_Crash

The points are on his license and not deducted from the championship so shouldn’t matter as it’s his first 2 of the season.

Bizarre decision to penalise Verstappen for not making his car invisible. Hamilton really does seem to get every decision in his favour.

I think this image may have swayed the steward's. There's zero reason for max to be turning his wheel to the right like that.

"Well, yeah, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"
