Are the Junior park runs expected back at the same time?

Mad really that the kids have blasting into tackles at GAA since April and we cant get this back up and running.

Any going ahead on the Dublin border area as Dublin seems to be a no go .

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,169 ✭✭✭diceyreilly

Naas is. Thinking of going. Can’t make sense of Dublin not opening as the ones close by might be overrun.

It will be because there are a couple of event which have previously had over 500 participants so they want to at least give the impression of aiming to follow the rules, even though they won't turn person 501 away.

Based on the other restarts though people don't travel en-mass, even to nearby events that are open. The numbers were still significantly down on the event I did last week despite good weather and schools being back so people were no travelling. People have just found other things to do on a Saturday morning and will take a while for numbers to ramp up again.

I would have been mildly concerned about numbers in some specific locations before the stages of the UK restart, but now seeing the numbers have no concern about similar in Ireland.

Odd one alright. There are only 3 events in Dublin that would ever come close to 500. Given the reports of numbers down where other parkruns have opened I wouldn't see it as a big risk. We seem to be overly cautious as a nation though so maybe this is just a further reflection of that.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 24,118 Mod ✭✭✭✭robinph

I belive not opening Dublin comes from HQ. I doubt they think it would reach those numbers, but just in order to not annoy local governments... Then they go along to them in a couple of weeks and say that numbers are down, but very slight risk of 501 turning up at parkrun X, we're a great public health organisation, what will you do to us if 501 turn up?

Much like DCM having to cancel this year because they had no guarantees regarding restrictions and covering costs in the absence of being able to get insurance for such things, parkrun needs assurance from government that they won't get shutdown if 501 parkrunners turn up.

Re Junior Park run - I dont think so. Our local one hasnt been on, I dont think any of them are.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 24,118 Mod ✭✭✭✭robinph

There could be any number of reasons for an individual juniors event to have not restarted, but all juniors across Ireland have permission to restart from parkrun HQ now.

Local landowners permission and volunteer numbers are different things which might be why they haven't restarted. Have a look on the Facebook pages for your local event to see if you can pick up a hint of why they might not have started yet, or email them nicely and ask what the story is and offer to volunteer if you can.

I can't see any reason why every parkrun would not be back on 25th right? (providing they have the volunteers to run it) Government are lifting all restrictions on Outdoor Group Activities on September 20th.

A friend of mine has been to 3 with his kids, including 2 brand new ones, all in the Dublin area.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,027 ✭✭✭opus

Not all junior parkruns are back as it's a decision left to each individual team when they are ready. Can be outside influences as well of course with permission etc. Two that I'm involved with are looking at later in Sept to resume.

Here is a list of the events going ahead this weekend, I am only seeing 43 from their own website, even though the announcement said 48...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,773 ✭✭✭donaghs

What’s the reason for no Dublin events?

    or why only 48 events?

if it’s Covid concerns (about being outdoors running in a park ?) surely reducing the number of events is more likely to increase the number of parkrun tourists?

No Dublin events because there is still a limit of 500 people, and although 500 are unlikely to turn up they could get close to that at some Dublin events...so just a case of not pushing that limit or drawing attention to themselves in a bad way. the last thing they want is scare headlines about parkrun knowingly setting out to break any government rules anywhere globally.

Headlines about hundreds of people out getting active in the open air is what they want, not anything about breaching any arbitrary limits even if those limits do get removed a couple of weeks later and nobody else is abiding by them anyway.

parkrun tourists are an odd bunch. They make out there is loads of themselves, and let you know on Facebook whenever they are going anywhere to parkrun... but in reality they are but a tiny percentage of parkrunners at any particular event unless something very unusual is happening. Those unusual thing previously might have been Paul Sinton-Hewitt turning up to an inaugural event, but he's now self banned from doing that any more, or an unrelated massive running event happening nearby which draws big crowds in.

The vast majority of parkrunners only ever attend their local one or two nearest events.

So looking at the above list of Parkruns going ahead does that also show that the only county that doesn't have a Parkrun (in a non covid world) is Leitrim? I kinda feel bad for people in Leitrim. They've it bad enough as it is.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,169 ✭✭✭diceyreilly

Not sure how accurate it is. Has Louth only down for one. Pretty sure oldcastle parkrun drogheda is in Louth ( could be on the meath side too though )

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,457 ✭✭✭corcaigh07

Agree with all that but I'm sure there was a legit fear that any Marlay runners would flood to Tymon or Bushy and any St.Annes would go to Father Collins.

Hopefully that will be null and void soon with the further easing of restrictions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,190 ✭✭✭✭Pherekydes

Oldbridge parkrun is definitely in County Meath.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,190 ✭✭✭✭Pherekydes

I'm loling at the idea of 500 turning up to Darndale.

Rivervalley has volunteers down for 22nd. Seriously hoping every parkrun will be back by then.

I was going to post about it but I see it's in the list above. Trim is having its first parkrun this weekend. I've never done one before and it clashes with some of the kids activities but we just might all tip along anyway for the inaugural run.

Out of interest where does it state there is a 500 person limit at present?

The only place I can see that number represented in guidelines is for stadia or enclosed outdoor arenas.

Surely with a public park for parkrun or other races there should be no limit where no indoor setting is required?

  • Registered Users Posts: 647 ✭✭✭simonw

I was there one time and there was literally more horses in the park than runners (7 vs 6)

  • Registered Users Posts: 491 ✭✭Butterbeans

I couldn't find the 500 figure either, but from 20th September all restrictions for outdoor group activities are lifted (not including outdoor concerts or sports matches).

They're playing it safe, which is probably the best approach, as said above, they don't want attention for the wrong reasons. All events will be back soon enough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,484 ✭✭✭✭Murph_D

Well, I suppose if Leitrim wanted one, Leitrim would have one. parkrun is a community-led event. That’s the strength of it - it’s a bottom-up organisation. Well, mostly anyway!

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 24,118 Mod ✭✭✭✭robinph

I belive in the absence of a government statement saying that it doesn't apply to parkrun, which England had although it made no difference in the end, they are just going for the extreme caution route so that no one can claim they read it wrong if they did open up.

Because they are no longer concerned about having the majority of events in a country open at once means that Ireland does get a sooner restart though, otherwise they would wait until that ambiguous line was removed from the rules.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,698 ✭✭✭rovers_runner

Forest Park in Boyle is only 10 minutes out the road for Carrick People.

Also north Leitrim is a short spin from Sligo town, Longford town for south of the county. So they are spoiled for choice in fairness.

Could see one taking off in Drumshanbo though if they tried it, could use the boardwalk on the lake linking into the cycling trail.

This 500 limit is pure b0llocks. 40,000 people at Croke Park this weekend. We really are a country of fools to be accepting this sh1te.

All parkruns will be back on 25th September

Waterford nature park aiming for October 2nd, no date given by Tramore yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,092 ✭✭✭KAGY

Who hoo, Longford back tomorrow. I'll be starting back at the same pace 30+ min or slower than I did when I did my first park run many years ago. Going to enjoy breaking all those minute barriers all the way up to the 23 min mark which was my goal before covid hit.

Poppintree confirmed back for the 25th September.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,541 ✭✭✭Dudda

Not true. My local parkrun WhatsApp group confirmed it would be 23rd October that it's starting back when all restrictions are lifted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,484 ✭✭✭✭Murph_D

Well of course it is up to each local team to start up when they are ready - the date can’t be imposed on them. But the fact is, all events have been ‘cleared’ to restart from the 25th. Some will be later, for their own reasons, possible unavailability of venues, people etc.

Jogged around Kilkenny parkrun this morning. It seems like that hill gets longer every year.

Did Macroom this morning, hadn't really been paying attention to this thread so was surprised that only 51 showed up, which would be slightly lower than a normal week. Still, good to be back.

Was over a minute off my best time though, parkrun is harder than I remember 😅

Oh the sheer JOY of being back at parkrun!!! I did Mallow Castle inaugural, 18 months later than originally planned. The old Mallow park run was in the Town Park so first time at the new location today for parkrun. Great to see over 100 people there, everyone smiling, everyone happy. Seeing the 'caution runners' signs coming into the park was so brilliant. I was delighted to run the whole thing given I haven't run in many months. Volunteering next week then will start my Cork parkrun tour before the mornings get too dark. Normality is resuming 😊🙌

Great to be back we had 81 this morning in lees road and 10 volunteers feels like normality has returned at last.

  • Registered Users Posts: 491 ✭✭Butterbeans

It seems to get longer with each lap. Kilkenny is a great parkrun but it's tough, that hill 3 times is killer! My dad and sister ran it this morning too.

All good around Cork this morning - https://corkrunning.blogspot.com/2021/09/cautious-return-to-5k-parkruns-in-cork.html

I was going to add the new (kind of) parkrun at Mallow Castle to the gps tracks thread but can't see how to add a link with this new version of boards. Anyway here's a pic of the start/finish area.

Second week of the Den Haag park run took place this morning around Zuiderpark for those who like coffee shops & sexy windows!!!

I ran Russborough yesterday, it was so amazing to be back. The first time I ran amongst other people in well over a year. Met Wubble Wubble there, enjoyed that.

Was surprised at the numbers. It got 99, and although it is double their average I had expected many more. It being one of the closest to Dublin, and Naas not on.

    Anyway, welcome back everyone.

At Kilkenny there are 164 in the official results but easily well over 200 there. Those without barcodes were advised not to enter the funnel at the finish. Very well organised I must say.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 24,118 Mod ✭✭✭✭robinph

That's not normal parkrun policy, they want the numbers of parkrunners recorded even if they don't have barcodes.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 22,407 CMod ✭✭✭✭Pawwed Rig

Seems very odd alright. Getting a position token was always a good way to know roughly what time you had.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,513 ✭✭✭Dubh Geannain

Went to the Porch Fields parkrun in Trim in the end. My guess was just over 200 entered. 193 finished according to the results but there were a few happy with 1 lap done and skipped off.

Planned for a nice slow 2 laps with the family pushing the buggy. Our two boys were two of the youngest there and I think 5 k is a bit much for them to run so was planning on walking a bit. We stood towards the back for the start. And that's how we went for the first half Km chatting away as we jogged. The youngest then got a stitch so I waited back with him as we jogged super slow and finally walked a bit. He was determined to finish it though and after the first lap he was running properly again finishing much quicker than he had started. The eldest fella went ahead with mammy. He got a bit carried away trying to catch people. After pestering her a bit she told him he could run 2 or 3 people ahead of her but that was it, he was gone after the first lap and then too far to call back. She was straining to watch the little fella weaving in and out of all the giants but managed to keep sight of him on and off over the last lap. He finished in around 29 minutes and was waiting at the finish line when I came in 8 minutes later. As we headed off his fresh face soon turned pale before he threw up his breakfast. We had told him it wasn't a race and to take it easy. Lesson learned? Probably not. He was still delighted with himself.

All the Dublin parkruns seems to be starting on the 25th? Its kind of ridiculous that its taking so long to get parkrun going again. Such a safe healthy outdoors activity. When you can have pints in a pub and watch a game in croke park on the same day.

What are the nearest parkruns to Dublin which are open? Trim, Navan, Naas, Russborough.
