You forgot the bit where McDonald’s changed their burgers for a cheaper supplier, made a mess of them, and were still trying to kid everyone months later that they’d sort them out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,942 ✭✭✭Jimmy Bottlehead

    Except its not.

It's the equivalent of going into McDonald's for years. Then they change the menu and end up giving a load of people diarrhoea. After that some customers still pop in for the occasional burger, but mention that Burger King across the road also sell burgers.

I doubt I'd see McDonald's kicking people out for merely mentioning other food places.

@Boards.ie: Niamh sorry now, but I have had enough - I am angry... have gotten so much info and fun from this site over the years and I really miss it - but now.. you accuse us of shilling??? Definition of the verb to "Shill" as per Cambridge: someone who helps another person to persuade people to buy something, especially by pretending to be a satisfied customer

So people on here have been posting/PMing about "another" site - that's NOT shilling (as per the above def).. the only reason folk are doing this is cos something that was sooooo good has been destroyed.... now there is a demand for a replacement.. such exists - and why not let others who are in need know of such???? I dunno if anyone is profiting from it but the main reason folk here are posting/PMing about it is as a way to help other folk out - this place is not working and it doesn't look like it ever will, again!!! grrrrr Sorry - but I am annoyed.. I cannot believe how something so good has being ruined.. and you have no sympathy for we, the users at all... this is NOT "shilling".. talk about adding insult to injury! 😡 if you don't want us talking about the other site - then give us a reason NOT to!!!

In fairness, things have started coming together for me here.

A lot of the stuff I used to follow is appearing again mainly due to the bit at the end with a link to the forums so I can find some of my previous threads.

Quite a few are still missing but I probably followed too much over the years anyway.

My latest gripe is moving to next page. When I tap what should be the next page button in a fast moving thread on mobile I get brought to the last page. Usually I don't bother trying to find where I left off and just leave the site.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,325 ✭✭✭-=al=-

Similar with the back button too. It takes an eternity to load the initial page and then go back and reload the previous page page again. I usually just close the tab.

Been checking in here the last few weeks but the site is still unusable on mobile anyways. It’s the speed of loading and/or doing anything is my biggest gripe. That’s a pretty big gripe!

Haven’t signed up to the alternative site, but any publicity is...

Can’t believe it made a filter list, though! Impressive

Is there any way to make the touch site homepage look a little less awful and a little more like how it was before? I adored the three pillars it used to have where Latest Posts, My Forums and My Threads were all situated together. I just can’t work the site the way it currently is, I mean I can technically work it but my interest has depleted massively. Why do we still have to scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page to access My Bookmarks? For myself and a lot of other users, this was our way of navigating the site. Surely this should be pinned up at the top?

Im still scratching my head and wondering who this all makes sense to

To access "My Bookmarks", click the star in the menu bar at the top of the page

Boardsie Enhancement Suite - a browser extension to make using Boards on desktop a better experience (includes full-width display, keyboard shortcuts, dark mode, and more). Now available through your browser's extension store.

    Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/addon/boardsie-enhancement-suite/

Exactly like this as 28064212 has described, see the image below. Tap on the star icon in the header to open a pop up with your most recently updated bookmarked threads. Click on the 'All Bookmarks' link at the bottom to go to the My Bookmarks page with all of your bookmarked threads there.

    Hi all,

You will be glad to know that Dispute Resolution is back up and running as is Help Desk with @Spear and @Shield at the helm of both. They are now taking care of the Help & Feedback category as the two category mods here, not an easy task as you might imagine so I'd like to thank both of them for that.

There have been lots of reports about image size. We have increased the max size so that there are no more illegible images, it seems to happen to screenshots in particular. Hopefully the new size is big enough, if not we can adjust it again.

That's all for this evening everyone, thanks for reading :)

    Test...

Seems to still resize the original size no options to resize when editing also.

    image.png

    The above is full screen 1920 x 1080. It renders as 900 x 506.

Here's another image that is 1920 x 1080 pulled off web

It does resize, but at least 900px width is a little better than the previous 500px

I see my post about reddit has been deleted.

Jesus Christ how low can you go boards.ie

    Pathetic stuff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,325 ✭✭✭iLikeWaffles

If you were editing post you could resize the image (small, medium, large) that is no longer an option. As well as these options there was options to add a caption to an image. You could also delete an image when you click on it by pressing delete, you can't now. The only way to delete seems to be by pressing backspace when the cursor is on a line after the image.

There's also been posts deleted in Current Affairs mentioning the words that make up the name of the "other" site.

I'm not allowed to tell you what words those are as I have been warned I will no longer be permitted to post in this thread if I do. 😂

That's unfair, Niamh is like a lone firefighter in front of the towering inferno. It's well know at this stage that Mark sadly passed away too.

Odhran should be engaging with users, he's the CEO and Niamh is trying to fix things in the background of a site that's was never designed to act like old Boards.

The last few pages of this thread have been very unpleasant to read. A load of bitter middle-aged dudes ganging up on an employee of a small message board site. The sort of posters who do nothing only moan and complain anyway. Never anything constructive. The association the site has with angry middle-aged men who considered themselves hip in 2001 is the main reason the site is struggling.

Morning all, I'll check those image issues this morning. All I had edited were the sizes allowed so nothing else should have changed but will do a few tests here and see if something else needs to be updated.

That was a post I made in relation to a truly current unprecedented event in irish politics. A well known, well used phrase (not just the initials) in use since the 1980s in Irish politics/life cannot now be used to aptly describe a current situation - I'm afraid that is nuts. I've contacted the person responsible and I am still waiting for him or her to reply.

I don't believe this thread was the place for a song and dance to be made about another site. Kind of makes a joke of announcing the deletion of bickering posts about the current technical almost 8 week old FUBAR yet adding an unrelated bickerfest to the thread which has now brought in real life, actual shítposters.

    Welcome to v1.0 indeed!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 41,281 ✭✭✭✭ohnonotgmail

Is that why my post was deleted? It wasn't a reference to the other site at all. Can @Boards.ie: Niamh @Boards.ie: Odhran confirm if that is the case? If so that is completely ridiculous and the site shooting itself in the foot again. Are they deliberately trying to piss users off?

we still can't delete our own posts, ffs

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,444 ✭✭✭✭expectationlost

would the boards.ie describe themselves as small?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,885 ✭✭✭✭MEGA BRO WOLF 5000

At the end of the day..who actually wants to stay here? Nothing but utter contempt shown to the users here.

Stop talking about it and close your account then.

That's a question that those who are in a position to support can't as they already left, they will not actually be here. You're free to leave any time you want, nobody is forcing you to stay here. I've absolutely no problems sticking around.

    Hi folks

We made a few small updates today - one of those was post numbers are showing on Desktop now. We also will work on getting them over to mobile also. We are also working on amongst other things:

    • Bookmarks icon on desktop (like mobile)
    • Time stamp
    • Most thanked
    • Mod utils
    • Notifications
    • Popular Forums
    • My forums
    • Our staging environment is out of sync
    • Moving all css updates off 'pockets' and in
    • Adding an additional new post above fold on mobile
    • Investigating reports of deleted threads - this was resolved and not an issue
    • Ad placements - currently in pockets which do not work so need to be hardcoded to site

Some of the above need to be hardcoded and submitted for approval and we try to get as many of these in at once.

We have the old top nav built but decided not to push it since the right hand panel has been there for sometime. We will however utilise the drop down and share here over the coming weeks. We want to add in a few more ways to get too popular forums too which will help users find areas that are not logically found in search at the moment.

We have been working with Vanilla on resolving issues with search performance / speed. We have reindexed lots of times now and its still pretty poor to say the least and there seems to be some pretty big issues here. The Vanilla CTO is investigating and we will be following up again over the coming days. Currently search relevance is set to give weight to the title of the discussion and much the search term(s) are mentioned within the discussion which means we get back results from 10 years ago that don't make sense. There currently is a drop down menu to select results populate which we will look to setting at newest by default as a short-term fix.

    image.png

The above are just some of the things we are working on. We also have plugins to create for various items - modtools, gdpr, homepage updates including timestamps etc - so these things take a little bit longer to complete and as you know we have a very small team working through a long list.

Over the coming weeks after we get some more of the bigger ticket items sorted we will share some data around posts, traffic etc. We are certainly down in some areas ie new post count vs pre-migration - a lot of that is down to issues that have been raised here... some fixed, some being worked on... but we are starting to see some positive signs there and hopefully that continues.

We are collating all feedback that is posted here and adding it to a master list and have a lot to do so please don't take us not responding to every reply as not listening... we just have to prioritise a lot of work in the background that consumes a lot of time... and we are few. You will see from a lot of our fixes / updates have been flagged here - so thanks again for that it is really helpful.

We are getting to a better place everyday. Slower than I hoped and it goes without saying that we are not happy with how the migration went or the pace of change - that is on me. But I have said a few times that we had a to make this change or there would not be any Boards.ie anymore and I stand by that. We will never be the Boards platform of old I'm afraid - We are trying to get to a place where its similar and we will get there are getting there through your feedback.

I have taken note of a few issues noted around bookmarks & notifications. We had several fixes roll out on this so will PM some of you directly to see if there are still problems.

    Thanks,

    Odhran
