Brilliantly entertaining final from a neutral point of view. Lots of talent coming through.

The GAA really need to follow rugby's lead on tackles to the head area. John small went in to do him there and should have been sent off. I don't for a minute think Small meant to catch him on the jaw but he had no intention of playing the ball and went for the big shoulder. He missed his mark and made contact with the jaw and therefore should have been sent off. These are amateur players with jobs or studies to look after. Accidents will happen and injuries too but that challenge yesterday, although perhaps without intent, was reckless in the extreme and lead to a very serious injury for the Mayo player.

The GAAs approach to discipline is deplorable. Casey's red card rescinded for Limerick too. Sends out the wrong message totally. Would love to see a GAA president take the bull by the horns and sort out the discipline issues once and for all. I'll be waiting I'd say.

    P.S. I'm both a GAA fan and a player.

So you think O'Callaghan is as good as McManus and Clifford?

    Well done Offaly!!

    Leinster football needed that!

Really. I think you're been extremely harsh on Brian Fenton there. He may be playing slightly below the massive standards that he set in his first 6 or so seasons with Dublin. But, for me anyway, those standards equate to one of the best players in Ireland. I think he has still been playing quite well, getting a stranglehold on many games when it was needed.

Yesterday, he did his best to drive Dublin on in the extra time. And towards the end of the regular time. He fetched it, and took the ball on like a leader. But his colleagues just didn't show the same willingness to put the body on the line to win the game. Mayo did.

For me anyway, I would have had Brian Fenton and Paddy Small as Dublins more influential players. Con O'Callaghan no. He's lethal when the game is going well and plenty of good supply. But he is not the type of player who will think - "**** this game is getting away from us; I need to do everything in my power to take control".

I agree , the shoulder charge in this scenario is a free shot and an opportunity to "legitimately" take out an opponent , a sacred cow that needs to be addressed . I felt Small left something in there as well and the incident deserves investigation.

I've no issue with the shoulder charge, done correctly it's not a dangerous way to tackle. It's a great part of the sport. But it should carry a heavy penalty if the shoulder is missed. Shoulder to chest = yellow. Shoulder to head/neck = red. Players wouldn't be long getting accurate with them if that was enforced. That John Small shoulder yesterday was far worse than the Richie Hogan one from a few years back. That was correctly given a red and you had Shefflin playing the poor mouth about it at half time. Contact with the head or neck when attempting a shoulder charge should be a red, end of.

Have we already reached a stage were we are questioning the talent of 6 time All Ireland winners because they finally lost a game… wow.

Funny how people can just ignore the loss of Cluxton, Brogans, Connolly and McCaffrey etc as if it’s had no impact at all.

Why do Dubs think they're the only team in Ireland that lose players due to retirement?

    Cry me a river.

I am only an occasional GAA follower. I would watch the big games. What's with extra time in GAA? I was watching yesterday and they all trooped off at full time. They must have been gone for 15 minutes form final whistle blowing to extra time whistle starting.

The commentator implied there was something odd or confusing about GAA matches going to penalties. What was all that about?

Apologies, I meant my own aborted one, which I couldn't delete because of the wonderful new site format.

Had attempted a lame quip about you and johner making very similar posts near simultaneously.

Penalty shoot outs are a relatively new addition to GAA rules. There used to be replays after draws after extra time.

There hasn't ever been a senior game of major important decided by a penalty shoot out.

Ah, ok. Fair enough. Had me thinking, I post some nonsense on here but that was at the normal end of the spectrum lol.

Yeah, I hate the way you cant edit/delete properly. New site is shìte

To me Fenton was excellent yesterday, and was the only Dublin player who a) could justifiably say he played well and b) didn't resort to any nasty stuff. Natural leader in a post-Cluxton world.

I find it ironic too that a poster, who has since gone into hiding, was claiming he was getting abused and no-one wanted to talk football with him, when he is the most disparaging and disrespectful to every other county.

Talk on the radio this morning that Kerry-Tyrone could yet be rescheduled for the weekend after next. Anyone got anything more on this? Were Tyrone just calling Croke Park's bluff by 'pulling out'?

it's a bit weird having no big match on today and Women's football on TG4, feels more like a Sunday in late September.

As I said, I don't think I've ever seen a 45 (or even a free) retaken for those reasons. Would it have been retaken if the 1st one had been scored?

At least last night you could have the excuse of being three sheets to the wind, but to start coming out with the same bullshyte in the light of day only leads us all to the conclusion you are a grade A deluded gombeen.

You are a disgrace to true Dublin fans and supporters.

Yeah we might slag each other, but not spout insufferable horseshyte like you.

And if the ref was so for Mayo, please explain how come no Dublin player was penalsed yet a Mayo player ended up carted off to hospital last night.

    Lane was terrible.

Even if he reckoned in real time shoulder was ok, he should have stopped the play the minute he saw a player collapse like that on the ground.

Instead he let play go on.

Aren't there any rules about head injuries, there are in every other sport ?

Lane only seemed to discover some rules once the match was nearly finished.

So you know what you and Conor Lane can both do.

I am not allowed discuss …

Kerry GAA statement saying they open to rescheduled game.

    Over to HQ

Nice amount of wriggle room in that statement, but it's certainly one that needed to be made. No doubt HQ will make a mess of whatever decision they decide to come to.

Also, thought this was funny: "Every All-Ireland title that Kerry has won, has been hard earned after a tough competitive campaign and we expect this year to be no different."

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,034 ✭✭✭Swaine

Why is that so funny? It's funny that a Dub finds it funny. Ironic even.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,224 ✭✭✭✭jmayo

Something that was pointed out by RTE panel last night was the vista where what happens if now Kerry or Mayo have covid within the camp.

They will rightly demand they are afforded the same treatment as Tyrone.

You could end up with final at end of September after all.

Tyrone v Kerry on 28th August, final v Mayo two weeks later.

    Common sense has prevailed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,795 ✭✭✭jimmytwotimes 2013

    You could.

Even if its refixed the final will have a team playing after 2 weeks rest/inactivity, versus a team playing after 4 weeks rest/inactivity. (I assume final will be put back a further week)

But such is the situation now.

Do we think they'd genuinely prefer to play the match? You'd imagine Tyrone will still be in pretty rag order, and Kerry would be hot favourites even under 'normal' circumstances...

  • Administrators Posts: 55,019 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭awec

Kerry maybe concerned that they've not had a game in about 6 weeks while Mayo are coming off the back of a real battle against Dublin?

Even if it's half a Tyrone team it's surely a better run-out than an intra-squad match?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,359 ✭✭✭jon1981

It's a **** situation. I'm sure Kerry wouldn't prefer a walkover either. No ideal scenario but lets hope Tyrone can do their best to field a competitive team.

Given that the Mayo player McLaughlin has a double fracture to his jaw and will miss the final, and more significantly the referee and officials waved on play while he was seemingly out cold on the field, is there any chance of legal action being taken to redress the very obviously negligent actions of the officials? I'm not familiar with the rudiments of GAA procedures but having watched the game yesterday (I'm not a regular viewer) I thought the lack of action on their part, and even worse the fact that the tackler got off scot free seems completely wrong. But as I said, I'm not a regular viewer.

Yes I know in all sports referees are human and might get things wrong. But to the unbiased eye, this was pretty poor and would seem like negligence on the part of the officials. If the prone player had swallowed his tongue, he could have choked and possibly died out there. Does anybody know the rules/procedure for these situations?
