Conor Lane should never referee at this level ever again.

Dublin fans blaming the referee just sound bitter to be honest. If anything, Dublin got lucky with a few of the things he missed. Both teams had to put up with him.

What do you think Mayo did?

Dublin were the disgrace to the sport not Mayo. Dublin were incredibly lucky the referee DIDN'T follow any rules of the game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,133 ✭✭✭✭castletownman

I said it to my father and father in law in passing yesterday that if Mayo win, no-one in the country would begrudge them going all the way, but there will always be an exception from Dublin.

And along comes Strumms here to confirm my belief.

The most myopic, sorest loser I ever did see.

Every single post from you is contrarian and vindictive. A WUM basically.

I cannot think of a more loved GAA County then mayo, neutrals seem to love them. Will it end if they eventually win it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,617 ✭✭✭✭billyhead

Dublin practically went into the game uncooked. Leinster is a farce of a championship. The provincial system needs to end.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,116 ✭✭✭Enquiring

Poor lad is not taking the defeat well.

The Dublin players choked under the pressure yesterday. Mayo players stood up to be counted. Would many have predicted that?

He wouldn't be wrong. Eoghan Mc has a double jaw fracture but sure that was a fine challenge. 🤨

Listened to Alan Brogan on a podcast there (Parkinson's) recently telling how the Dublin team had a series of what ifs? What if the bus breaks down? What if there is a sending off in the first minute? They had prepared for every eventuality. It was as if this Dublin outfit had moved beyond what scored goals and points. The basics were taken care of. A machine that left no stone unturned and let the players fulfil the plan.

The talent on the pitch was irrelevant to winning the game - doesn't matter if Cluxton retires, Comerford is the best goalie in Ireland. We don't have to worry about Jack McCaffrey quitting at 26, next man up. Eoin Murchan steps up. Doesn't matter if Brogan or Connolly sit on the bench. In every other county, getting the most talented players from a smaller pool onto the field is essential. No other county has the luxury of allowing a 26 year old superstar retiring.

Today (and this year) has shown that the greatest footballer in the past decade (Brian Fenton, James McCarthy, Con O'Callaghan depending on who you listen to) find it a lot easier to play when you have McCaffrey or a Connolly beside them, or Cian O'Sullivan, or MDMA or Paul Flynn coming on etc.

Dublin lost today because they didn't have enough great players on the pitch. It matters. Mayo realised you can push up against them as you didnt have nearly as much to fear or as many danger men to cover. There was no fluke about it. Dublin couldn't cope and decided to go to the 'dark arts' - euphemism for being dirty, cynical, and playing **** football. Delighted to see Davy Byrne kick the ball over his own goal line to lose the game for them.

They best do a what if on what if you arent the most talented team on the pitch and come up with a better answer than yesterdays to win next years All Ireland.

Ref had some calls off on both sides, some worse than others.

However I do think part of the social media outrage is people seeing things on tv, on playback and in slow motion. You just don’t see tackles like this as much in other tv games or the level of abuse roared at refs etc. Rugby is quite managed (tv ref etc). Soccer is different again. To those tuning in who don’t watch much GAA it’s a lot to digest

For what it’s worth with the level of physicality and strength on the pitch nowadays shoulder tackles are too dangerous imo. I know others will disagree but there’s too much room for error I feel and we know so much more about concussion etc I feel they shouldn’t be allowed at all. And I have always absolutely hated the tolerance of shouting and roaring and temper at the ref. And as a mayo lady Aidan o Shea should not have been on that pitch no matter how angry he was. I know it’s in built to the game at this stage but it feels and looks thuggish

Having said that, one way or the other I’m a happy woman today. Do we have what it takes for Kerry? Who knows! But yesterday was just brilliant! Had it all, bitten nails and nerves and fear at half time. Building excitement and budding hope. Then the absolute chaos before the end and wtf as we realised we had extra time. The heart attack when Dublin scored the first point in extra time then the growing realisation that we might do it tinged with the fear of the many many games before where we hadn’t. What a brilliant day out, fair play to these sportsmen for the dedication to providing us with such an experience!!

Jaysus, I’ve seen sore losers before but that Strumms takes the biscuit. Better luck next year.

It's very strange for a player to receive a double jaw fracture in a fair shoulder to shoulder challenge isn't it?

Absolutely disgraceful act by Small yesterday. Should receive a lengthy ban.

As a neutral glad to see Mayo win for the good of football, the big thing out of the game today was James Horan standing up as manager today and showing he runs the team and made the right decision to take off AOS and not to bring him back on. He has gone for young players with no fear and has them playing his way and not letting players dictate how the team plays. Dublin were playing Dessie way which doesn’t suit the team, to hold on to the ball and run down the clock which never works, Gavin’s way was go for the jugular early and put the game to bed.

I know this won't be bothering too many Mayo supporters this morning, but has anyone figured out why the last 45 was retaken? Pretty sure it's the 1st time I've ever seen that decision.

Delighted with yesterday's result, the game badly needed Dublin dethroned after 6 years.

Wouldn't be as quick as others to write off Mayo's chances of beating Kerry.

Delighted for Mayo. Dublin supporters are seeing now that when a team is as dominant as them, that the ever growing hatred of supporters of other counties causes those supporters to lose all objectivity and in the context of the achievements of the dominant team be more than willing to portray cynicism, refereeing decisions, dirt etc. as being much bigger contributors to the dominance than they really were, all the while ignoring that a lot of these indiscretions that they regard as being unique to the dominant team are in fact common to all the teams that are challenging the dominant team, including their own.

Then when the dominant team eventually lose, that pent up hatred leads to an outpouring of bile with many letting themselves down in the process.

It must be said that the Dublin team yesterday did nothing to abate the negative narrative about them, with many cheap shots and instances of cynicism

The ref's performance did leave a lot to be desired but I'd imagine it was a tough match to ref, peppered among the cheap shots from Dublin players were multiple instances of Mayo players hitting the deck a little over dramatically making distinguishing the more serious offences from the less a bit more difficult.

I can understand the ref not initially penalizing Small for the challenge on McLaughlin, it was hard to tell in real time where Small connected with him but not picking up the effects of the impact from the way McLaughlin hit the ground was very poor in my opinion, there was none of the theatrics we've seen in other similar high profile instances in both codes in recent years where the recipient of the challenge throws their head back in a direction unconnected to the original impact with flailing arms etc. McLaughlin went straight down and didn't move for what seemed like a while, which should have been picked up by the ref.

I was at the game and it looked to me that the ref called it back because subs were still coming on? However, heard from someone else that it was because McMahon was standing too close to Hennelly at the time it was taken.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,193 ✭✭✭✭Bass Reeves

I think Philly McMahon ran onto the field as a sub while he was taking the 45. Subs are only supposed to enter the field during a break in play.

In this case as he was starting his run so ref was entitled to get it retaken

I don't love them. I've had the misfortune to sit beside Mayo supporters more than once at games I attended as a neutral and they're hard to listen to. Almost as bad as Dublin supporters.

My attitude regarding the players is different and I'd love to see the likes of Diarmuid O'Connor win an AI, he always leaves everything on the field and yesterday was no different, EG that ball he inhumanly managed to keep in play.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,301 ✭✭✭doc_17

Yes, Mayo fans are almost unbearable at times but compare them to Kerry or Dublin. Especially Kerry. Dripping of arrogance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,116 ✭✭✭Enquiring

I believe the 45 was retaken because the referee was blowing up for an incident behind Hennelly. Ciarán Kilkenny was too close and was being held back by a Mayo player. Lane wanted to put a stop to the incident.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,438 ✭✭✭Morgans

I think the Philly reasoning was given on RTE. It didnt make sense as Philly had ran by Hennelly about a minute beforehand. I dont think it had anything to do with subs/philly.

There was a camera shot from behind Hennelly were you can see two lads pulling and dragging around the half way line (not interfering with Hennelly). Ref whistled and looked to be pointing to them as Hennelly shot wide. Henley threw up his arms as if the ref's whistling interfered with him, and was allowed take again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,128 ✭✭✭youcancallmeal

Yes this was the reason, the commentators couldn't even figure it out but before extra time started they showed an angle of the incident happening behind Hennelly which caught the refs attention. I'd assume it was retaken because the ref wants to see what's going on inside the 45 when the kick is taken.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,116 ✭✭✭Enquiring

Here it is lads, conclusive evidence. Not looking at the ball at all, lining up McLoughlin and a shoulder straight to the jaw. McLoughlin didn't drop his head, there are no excuses for this. An absolutely filthy act and if this is not investigated it's a disgrace.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,255 ✭✭✭C__MC

The GAA have a terrible record in dealing with those kind of hits, didn't some kerry lad flatten a Cork lad upon a throw in a final back in the noughties. Jackie tyrell got away with that stuff for years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,133 ✭✭✭✭castletownman

    Its crazy.

For a more physically aggressive sport, rugby have perfected the punishment of the shoulder into the head. Small's defenders will of course say that he didn't intend to connect the way he did, but no rugby player go out to intentionally concuss an opponent either (if they do, they are thugs). Its about time they had some sort of video referee for incidents like that. Easier to retrospectively book two fellas for hand-bags off the ball I suppose.

It’s seen as a legitimate part of the game. McStay said after seeing it that he had to power through him.

Mc stay is still as bitter with mayo for not giving him the job in 2014 and the hiding mayo gave his roscommon in 2017. Another RTÉ dinasour that needs to go. Can some please tell me how joanne cantwell got the job of micheal lyster? Beyond brutal constantly cutting across the pundits.
