Ya ya ya, but does that youtube video offer an alternative explanation for the climate trends that started circa 60 years ago?????????

  • Registered Users Posts: 19,751 ✭✭✭✭cnocbui

Now before you complain about the scale, this next one is the temperature record for the earth for the last 600 or so million years. Look at the right hand extremity of that line, can you see the rise in termperature that the IPCC and others are peddling as catastrophic and which will soon be 'too late'? And that's a far larger scale than the one above.

Here's another one from NOAA showing the last 800,000 years and the relationship between atmospheric CO2 and temperature:

As you can see, there is a very clear repeating pattern of peaks and troughs. The latter are ice ages and the recent rise in CO2 and temperature is a perfect match for that pattern, but the climate scientists are telling us current events are unprecedented in the earth's history, when clearly they are not, in fact, they try very hard to keep the conversation about only the last few hundred years.

It's thought that there is a direct relationship between the Gulf stream moving heat from the equator to the northern parts of the Atlantic and ice ages, with a shutting down of that current and heat transport being linked to ice ages. The gulf stream has been slowing for at least a thousand years, and more notecably since the 1850s.

So, Ice ages are preceeded by three things: A considerable and rapid rise in global temperature - check. A considerable and rapid rise in CO2 levels - check. A slowing and eventual halting of the Gulf stream - looks like it, so check.

So what seems to be happening now fits the pattern of what we know happens when ice ages kick off, but this time it's our fault?

Of course climate scientists know this, that is why they changed the discussion from Global Warming to 'Climate Change' so if temperatures actually started falling, or there were cold weather events, they could claim credit for predicting it.

You can all bend over and grab your ankles, but I am going to keep a look out for signs of large icebergs splitting from Antarctica and drifting further north than usual, because that is supposed to be another thing that happens just before ice ages kick off.

"Antarctic Sea Ice Reaches New Record Maximum" https://www.nasa.gov/content/goddard/antarctic-sea-ice-reaches-new-record-maximum

That was in 2014. Antarctica appears to have been piling on the pounds and putting on weight:

"A new NASA study says that an increase in Antarctic snow accumulation that began 10,000 years ago is currently adding enough ice to the continent to outweigh the increased losses from its thinning glaciers.

The research challenges the conclusions of other studies, including the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) 2013 report, which says that Antarctica is overall losing land ice.

According to the new analysis of satellite data, the Antarctic ice sheet showed a net gain of 112 billion tons of ice a year from 1992 to 2001. That net gain slowed  to 82 billion tons of ice per year between 2003 and 2008.

“We’re essentially in agreement with other studies that show an increase in ice discharge in the Antarctic Peninsula and the Thwaites and Pine Island region of West Antarctica,” said Jay Zwally, a glaciologist with NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, and lead author of the study, which was published on Oct. 30 in the Journal of Glaciology. “Our main disagreement is for East Antarctica and the interior of West Antarctica – there, we see an ice gain that exceeds the losses in the other areas.” Zwally added that his team “measured small height changes over large areas, as well as the large changes observed over smaller areas.”https://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/nasa-study-mass-gains-of-antarctic-ice-sheet-greater-than-losses

Of course if Antarctica starts shedding icebergs, the alarmists will ignore the recent weight gain and sell it as yet another sign of catastrophic anthropogenic Global warming (I refuse to use that BS term climate change). They won't say, oh dear, here comes the next ice age.

Cnocbui, the X scale on your is in 100,000 or 500 million year increments.

We're seeing heating in 10 year increments. Can you explain this?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,244 ✭✭✭Brid Hegarty

Well the hottest ever temperature was probably back in the dinosaurs or something. But haven't you heard that most scientists have decided to do away with the very old temperature records. Do you really think they're accurate?

Is the question of the thread, that climate change exists? Or that humans are causing climate change?

First of all, climate change exists. If you look back on the history of the planet, there are notable examples of climate change, most notably during the Ice Age. There have also been 5 mass extinction events that have occurred on this planet within the last 500 million years and climate change seems to have played a factor in these mass extinctions. Now some might say that these events occurred millions of years ago but climate change is still present today. Sea levels are said to be rising and several Islands in the Pacific Oceans are in danger of sinking. Unfortunately, I don't know if we'll be able to save them but it is still an example of what climate change is doing.

Secondly, as far as humans causing climate change goes. We're not exactly doing the world any favors when we destroy the environment. For example, Deforestation damages the balance of nature. Tress and plants are destroyed, animal habitats are destroyed and Biodiversity is reduced. Pollution can result in Acid Rain which can be harmful to the environment. Our dependence on Fossil Fuels leads to the release of carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases. So even if Climate Change is a natural thing, humans are only making things worse.

Calm down Brie. Getting a bit upset about all this

I have yet to see any kid who look stressed about climate change including my own. They generally dont watch or read the news so how are kids even aware of the climate change debacle? Concerns for kids mental health in the short term sounds noble but will be the least of our worries if climate change is running out of control.

Nothing wrong with a desenting opinion but it appears to be in the minority by a large degree and this opinion doesnt seem to have any contingency for if they are wrong about their assertions.

If we take the complexity of the argument and just establish simple facts I think we would be doing well.

There have always been periods of warming and cooling, these epochs correlate nicely with CO2 levels in the atmosphere. I don't think anyone would disagree with this less than earth shattering statement.

Overtime, life adapted to these often slowly increasing levels and began to sequester carbon into wood and other biological material.

This sequestered carbon then became buried and over millions of years formed the fossil fuels like coal oil and natural gas.

Fast forward a few million years and a bunch of smart apes mined and burned this fuel releasing this carbon into the atmosphere once more.

These apes having become less fond of the trees over time began to clear the forests while injecting millions of tons of carbon into the atmosphere.

This limits to ability of nature to sequester the carbon, consequently it will build up in the atmosphere. While not as potent a greenhouse gas as methane it can and does provide an insulating effect. As evidenced by both current data and data obtained from the fossil record.

This is as simple as I believe it possible to make this. Those that cannot or will not take the time to educate themselves with the portable supercomputer they are browsing the internet with are solely deserving of contempt and nothing else.

You could take a look at this for a start https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_consensus_on_climate_change . There are links in the references if you want to investigate further. Sometimes wikipedia has versions of their articles in "Simple English" but for this one unfortunately they don't.

Of course, if you google you will also find nuts and contrarians who even try to dispute the accuracy of the 97%, but you'll find they have no credentials, or else are working mining coal or oil or fracking for gas etc.

  • Registered Users Posts: 19,099 ✭✭✭✭Donald Trump

Where do you want them to go to get the numbers?

In other breaking news, crafty scientists have been also found out in relation to their hoax claims that smoking causes cancer. It seems that the people doing the surveys stupidly only asked scientists who were actively researching and publishing on cancer. It was like surveying a casino.........blah blah

I thought most climate-truthers had pivoted to "Sure, humans cause it but it's too late to do anything about it"?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,932 ✭✭✭eggy81

No. It won’t reverse until we hit another mini ice age. Might slow it though

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,041 ✭✭✭Mister Vain

The existential threat is imminent but at the same time its never too late to do something to stop it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,127 ✭✭✭Markus Antonius

So much ignorance crammed into one post. You are talking as though the whole earth is the size of Belgium. I bet you think there is an over-population crisis too? Wouldn't surprise me.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,857 ✭✭✭Spudmonkey

  • Registered Users Posts: 555 ✭✭✭tim3000

I don't think that there is any ignorance in simple facts that were outlined above. Could you direct me to the section of my post that has caused you confusion? I would be very happy to explain this to you again.

The earth is a lot smaller and far more sensitive than you think. We are lucky that we have existed in a time of relative geological and climatic stability.

In the interests of debate I am going to ask you some questions, if you wouldn't mind indulging?

Do you agree that we as a species are pumping carbon into the air?

Do you agree that we are interfering with biological processes that would help over time to lower carbon levels in the atmosphere? And by interfering I mean deforestation, destruction of species etc just so we are clear.

  • Registered Users Posts: 555 ✭✭✭tim3000

Are you going to answer my previous post?

Or have you other more pressing "truths" to drop on the sheeple?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,244 ✭✭✭Brid Hegarty

Maybe they're just pretending that it's still possible, in the hopes that people will make an effort. As opposed to coming along and saying "hey, the planet is fcuked either way, but if we adapt these certain habits it'll at least take a bit longer!"

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,551 ✭✭✭✭briany

I think the most aggravating thing is that the last people to believe the science on climate change will be the first people to come to my front door looking to cleave my head in if I refuse to give them the half sack of mouldy potatoes they heard I had, after the great drought of 2042.

  • Registered Users Posts: 555 ✭✭✭tim3000

Are you going to engage with my previous post? I would like to understand your point of view on the questions I put you.

What effect do you think the addition of millions of tons of Carbon dioxide to the atmosphere will on fact have?

It can't have no effect can it? When you reason it out there must be some result from simultaneous deforestation and buildup of atmospheric co2. I would be keen to hear your thoughts on this effect, if not global warming then what?

Of course there are records from the past, did you read anything about the report? They use varves, tree rings etc from all over the world. Just because it was warm in little England doesn't necessarily mean the world was warmer on average for example. The science is a collation of thousands of studies from all over the world, much more accurate than Mary says 1956 was a scorcher in Kerry so global warming must be made up.

You may as well be saying the world is flat, or vaccines contain microchips.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,719 ✭✭✭growleaves

'Of course there are records from the past, did you read anything about the report?'

    Nope.

'Just because it was warm in little England doesn't necessarily mean the world was warmer on average for example.'

    Was it though?

No it didn’t before the war the Nazis where going to ban them

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,328 ✭✭✭Banana Republic 1

If we stopped all CO2 emissions today it would take about 2000 years for the atmosphere to go back to they way it was pre the industrial revolution.

every inland and coastal water around Ireland is full of human waste so we’re doing a pretty good job here too.

getting rid of ICE vehicles ASAP will result in actual clean breathable air. Every time you breath, unless your in Antarctica or something, your inhaling toxic chemicals caused by the burning of fossil fuels.

I will agree with you on this, the coverage of the climate crisis by RTE and the wider media in this country is diabolical, people are not at all informed about the actual issues its a disgrace, hence why most people on treads like this one are deniers.

If climate change was as serious an issue as is shoved down our necks then there would be some real solutions on the horizon by now instead of the token crap aimed at making money. It’s an industry.

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,795 ✭✭✭✭Thelonious Monk

To fix things the idea of making money needs to be forgotten about, that's why nothing substantial will happen

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,127 ✭✭✭Markus Antonius

This is all just extrapolation of news-headline-science. Fearmongery that generates sales and clicks.

Nature is a perfect symbiotic system on an extraordinarily large scale. Humans will never proliferate to the point that we could throw this system off balance. Ever.

Not only is carbon dioxide an inert and safe gas, but plant matter and micro-organisms of the sea feed off it. We should be more fearful of a scenario where the carbon dioxide levels in the air are lower than they should be. Why? Because then the oxygen levels in the air would likely be higher. This would lead to more natural forest fires and more fearmongering headlines. But that would be just fine too, because the increased natural forest fires would replenish the amount of carbon in the air. It's a perfect system, it will never go off balance.

Besides this, there is no proof that carbon levels in the air affect temperature. There are more studies that show that carbon levels lag behind the increased temperatures. Even back in the mini-ice age of the 1600s, they had the intelligence to correlate the drops in temperature to unusual sun spots or colder zones of the sun resulting in the dramatic decrease in temperature. Not carbon dioxide.

If you were bothered to watch the documentary I linked in the OP, they constantly talk about the war on carbon and how it was all started off by Margaret Thatcher in the 70s during the coal miners strike. She wanted alleviate the country's dependence on coal and convince the public that Nuclear power was a cleaner and better alternative.

Have you ever heard of catalytic converters? ICE cars have never been cleaner than they are now, yet hysteria over the climate has never been higher. How did that happen?

You would rather we decimate the fresh water reserves of south America to make EV batteries? At least our conscience will be clear, we'll let them figure that problem out.
