Can't PM since your profile is on private.

And it is indeed a clusterf*ck. Reactionary stuff like deleting decades of members' private messages is the switch from forum preservation to self preservation.

Pms gone from view, but who knows where they're stored. Didn't have the option to delete them, now don't have the option to keep any ones that were useful, or delete the ones that had info in them. :|

I still can't even make my profile private because of my username... which I can't change!

Thanks to the person (possibly Wibbs), (apologies if somebody else as I can't find the post) who set up the thread for announcements.

Does anybody know if the the announcement about the private/non private messages was actually posted there by Odhran or did it have to be moved there from yet another "update" thread that I haven't come across yet?

It’s all just to quickly hide what’s happened and cover their arses. This thread and similar will also disappear and it’ll be “what issues?” Its how they’ve always operated.

Anyone looking for any answers around data protection would want to be screenshotting anything that relates to this at all.

This is absolutely unbelievable. The "owner" of the site is clearly so unfamiliar with how boards is used he can't even post his (bafflingly infrequent) updates in one place as a sticky... it's left to a volunteer to do it off their own bat.

Some serious privacy issues have been totally unaddressed, and not acted upon for days or weeks after having been reported.

And to top it all off I find that 15 years of my PMs have been deliberately deleted with no warning??

Seriously. What the hell is going on around here?

To be honest I think the issue is he can't navigate the mobile site either so just posts the odd update when a thread pops up

In some ways anyway they're damned if they do, damned if they don't. Personally I'd prefer all gone and a fresh start than having all my PM's available, or possibly compromised by a completely new platform that seemingly doesn't allow for old style PMs. Doubly so for those who dealt with companies in the talk to forums and gave their personal details. As for important stuff in old PM's; surely anything that was actually important people would have written it down somewhere else?

Defo not me, I'm not nearly that organised. 😁 Mickeroo was the one who did that and other helpful stuff.

    Morning all

We had expected that we would have an interm fix for navigation and follow forums live on desktop yesterday however that did not happen. I hope that will be live on Monday ahead of a larger update next week which includes amongst other items fixes to navigation on both mobile and desktop

Deleted PMs - the decision to remove all old PM's was taken last night as first step while engineers work on re-importing the migrated file. We will be providing a full report on that which will include why deleted PM's were visible in the first place.

edit - PM’s that were not deleted will be available again after import.

I will update again as soon as I have further information.

    Odhran

Re. writing down important info that was in PMs, I agree that anything like that would have been copied. But for me there's a lot of, for want of a better word, personal stuff in there that I am really unhappy I have lost.

I made a good few close friends over the years here. I even met my wife through boards.

I have to say of all the issues, losing all my years of PMs is the one I am most pissed off about.

Ah I get that Jay, but it looks like when the file's imported again PM's that weren't deleted will be back according to Odhran's post above.

Yep I just read that. Cheers lad. I just wish it had been made clear earlier!

Given recent "now you see it, now you don't" shenanigans you might want to screenshot that last sentence.

At the rate things are going around here, it could be a suitable epitaph yet!

I haven't read through this thread so this has probably already been asked but...

Please, please, for the love of God, bring back the "my forums" quick link that was on the right hand side of the old desktop site. I am finding it too tedious and time consuming to navigate to my most frequented forums as the site stands. I used to use boards every day, since the migration that's more like once a week.

Also, if the desktop site could be modified so that hovering over the topics link brings up a dropdown menu like it used to do that would go a long way to improving the navigability of the site.

@[Deleted User] and @Necro have figured out that you can PM a private profile by adding their name directly into the message, rather than trying to access via their profile.

If anyone is having issues or had issues with old PMs reappearing and they were related to to any of the business from the TalkTo forums, contact those companies Data Controller. Most of these companies have a strict policy on where data should reside, and would be horrified to find out that boards.ie have made them non-compliant with their own terms and conditions regarding data.

They will follow up with the Data Commissioner for you. It’s not just the current TalkTo companies that you can contact, you can contact all of them including the archived companies.

These companies will be very interested to find out that boards.ie moved their customers data outside of the EU.

Both of these things have been requested since about 30 minutes after the new site went live. They have been working on it ever since, and constantly promising something always around the corner "about to go live" once the Canadians start replying to their messages again. My guess is they have no clue how to do that

Yeah, more popular indeed. Among bots harvesting data from our then (un)deleted PMs. ;-p

Thanks. I found my profile page and I can see what posts were liked but still can't see who liked them. I can't see the reactions button, unless you mean the Like button on each post. If I click on that it just tells me that I can't react to my own post.

Absolutely no need for that, people should be able to post about issues without being shouted down regardless of how minor.

how many of those were visits to the feedback forums to say how terrible the migration has been? In how many of those visits did those users actually find what they were looking for?

It's incredible how different the two versions are in terms of look and usability.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,911 ✭✭✭✭ohnonotgmail

both versions seem to have functionality that the other lacks. Almost like the whole thing hasn't been thought through.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,097 ✭✭✭✭thesandeman

Hence the reason I repeatedly asked from the beginning that the two problems should be separated.

Eventually one of the people involved in the changeover replied and wasn't too sure if it would work but would see if others agreed.

I can't find the particular post or remember which of the feedback threads it was in so I don't know what the uptake was.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,093 ✭✭✭✭Jim_Hodge

I'm getting completely confused by people posting methods or solutions that make no sense to me because it's the mobile or touch rather than desktop. The issues need separating out, as do the eventual solutions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,511 ✭✭✭Purgative

@Neowise Maybe, but I wonder how much they're posting? Boards is one of tabs (currently) that loads when I open the browser. So I'm here everyday, usually its open while I do something else. Haven't posted squat in two days, and gradually that need to pontificate and share my wisdom is disappearing.

This is mortifying at this stage.

The site has been completely ruined and nothing major has been done to make it more user friendly. How can the my forums not have been sorted out by now. It has been over a month, whatever cretins are trying to sort out this mess clearly are not capable of doing so.

Whoever is in charge should be finding someone who can. Who the hell gave the go ahead for this. Embarrassing situation for all involved.

Rich Text Editor. To edit a paragraph's style, hit tab to get to the paragraph menu. From there you will be able to pick one style. Nothing defaults to paragraph. An inline formatting menu will show up when you select text. Hit tab to get into that menu. Some elements, such as rich link embeds, images, loading indicators, and error messages may get inserted into the editor. You may navigate to these using the arrow keys inside of the editor and delete them with the delete or backspace key.
