Thanks for the link. I've had a read through and I saw this...
"Tesla removed fully transferable Free Unlimited Supercharging from their options in March of 2017, though future promotions have given non-transferable Free Unlimited Supercharging to a smattering of owners through referrals, etc."
Does this mean that cars manufactured after this date don't get to transfer this benefit or that Tesla stopped the transfer for all cars after this date regardless of when they were manufactured?

***Edit - I also saw this but I'm still not 100% clear on it ...
First, Free Unlimited Supercharging does not transfer if you buy a Tesla from a 3rd party dealer. Tesla doesn’t like the idea of 3rd party dealers anyway, so they made sure that there wouldn’t be extra incentive for dealers to snag new or used inventory with that feature.
    ***

I purchased my car from a dealer but the car was not registered on the Tesla app by the previous owner. I'm reluctant to register the car now in case I lose these extra options

My car was manufactured in the summer of 2017, so I have unlimited supercharging but it doesn't transfer to the next owner. If you buy a car that was manufactured before March 2017 you should get unlimited supercharging.

As for your second question, perhaps Tesla Ireland can help. I find it strange that the previous owner never registered their car in the app. How long did he/she own the car?

Ok so I called Tesla yesterday and they told me that the model I have (2015 P85D) has free unlimited supercharging that starts with the car and that the performance package is standard on the car.
I don't know why the previous owner never registered the car with the app, guess they weren't arsed! Anyway it's all registered now and I can mess about with the different features that the app provides. Thanks for the help, I'm sure I'll be back with more questions

That's fantastic! Free unlimited supercharging is great but you will need a CCS adapter to use the new V3 superchargers, like the one in Cork that went live today.

I was reading about the tax benefits of buying a new EV for sole traders and limited companies, which in fairness is great.

What I cannot find out is anything about 2nd hand cars. Is there any tax benefits for let's say buying a 2nd hand Tesla?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,207 ✭✭✭innrain

The grants have been already applied to the 2nd hand EVs. In fact buying second hand as business a former privately owned, might get you better deals as there is no grant for businesses. Also if sole trader there is no BIK, I think. You can get the grant for the charger if installing @home.

€24k in year one off my tax bill for a new EV makes it very attractive.

€55k ish for a new ID4 with €24k off my tax bill is a lot nicer than €55k for a second hand Model S.

    No BIK for sole traders.

Just to clarify... AFAIK, you dont get to take €24k off the bottomline of your tax bill. You get to reduce your profit by €24k, which is very different from a tax liability perspective.

    At Remoove with Guillaume

In this video, Guillaume gives a guided tour of pretty much everything that went down at the Remoove EV event, which was hosted by the F²AUVE, the French federation of EV drivers recently.

When charging an electric car in an Irish rail car park, do you have to pay for the parking as well as the charging?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,207 ✭✭✭innrain

If the carpark is owned by IE then it is free while charging.

Use this link to find out info about specific station as not all car parks in the proximity of the train stations are owned by IE https://www.irishrail.ie/en-ie/Travel-Information/find-a-station

Trying to find the info from APCOA was fruitless for me as they only answer the phone to get payments.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,159 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

And am I correct in saying that if it's APCOA it's free to park while charging?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,561 ✭✭✭fafy

A question on the granny domestic 3 pin cable, not that i ever use them, but handy in an emergency.

    Are these vehicle specific ?

eg, i have one for a Kia E Niro, and one for a BMW i3, question is, will either of these 2 cables, work in say a Renault Zoe or Peugeot E 208 ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,207 ✭✭✭innrain

It is dangerous to think like this. P&R @ Luas is managed by APCOA and it is not free. It is paid parking even at the Rapid charger where I found clamped cars. The best way check the car park on IE website.

The theory says yes they should be compatible. All they do they set and monitor the requested current (max 10A ) and monitor the temperature on the socket side leads. I don't have experience with Zoe but from reading they are the peculiar one and Renault is adamant in using their original one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,561 ✭✭✭fafy

    Cheers.

The Zoe 3 pin cable is not supplied with it, only the “up to 22kw” cable is supplied, and i got a 3 pin cable price from their parts dept, and its €450 + vat, €550 ish - ouch. Got a second price and it was €100 less than that.

one big charging advantage to the Zoe, tbf, is its about the only EV, to charge up to 22kw AC, which is ideal when one doesent come across 50kw + fast charging too often, which is the situation with me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,316 ✭✭✭Busman Paddy Lasty

Zoe 3 pin charging worth more researching. Think the early models had their own specific 3 pin cable with transformer in the middle of the cable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,106 ✭✭✭silver_sky

I've a third-party one for the Zoe and it's grand. No issues charging it.

Did you check out the FAQs on the Irish Rail website? Just had a look there, and there is one that is "Can I park my electric car free of charge at Iranrod Éireann stations?"

And the answer it gives is:

An electric car may park free of charge at designated charging bays only for the purpose of re-charging the vehicle’s power supply. If electric car is not charging parking fees will apply.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,207 ✭✭✭innrain

The problem with that is that there are car parks in the proximity of train stations which are not owned by IE. For example Onramore train station car park is owned by Galway CC. Rules are set by them.

Is there a list of car parks near railway stations that are (or are not) owned by IE?

Another important thing to note about Oranmore station car park is that it is free for all cars to park there

Driving long distances in a Tesla is usually very easy thanks to the extensive and expanding supercharger network, so in this video series, Guillaume will attempt to drive about 4,500 km without using fast charge points to prove that you don't need a Tesla to drive long distances! In this video, Guillaume drives from the French west coast to Switzerland: 800 km on AC only in his Model 3 SR+.
