that was a serious last 500m for the bronze

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,733 ✭✭✭Duckworth_Luas

Cheer up appledrop, Ireland just won bronze in the Women's Fours rowing final, or maybe for you that's 4th last in the final!

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,038 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

Great battling performance - a sluggish start but they showed fantastic fighting spirit in the final 250m

Brilliant row from the girls. Timed it to perfection.

    Great result for the ladies.

Love how they kicked for home in the last km.

On a side note, Tubridy is currently pencilling them in for his first late late show in September.

Derek Burnett competing in his fifth Olympics!

starting now but no tv coverage, anyone know a good way to follow this? Perhaps someone is live tweeting?

    Well done to the ladies!

Nice to have medal wrapped up

Silver for Charlie Haughey’s grandniece. Great performance.

The men's lightweight doubles look nailed on for a medal now as well. And Puspure will have a reasonable chance in the single sculls. So the four girls might have some competition for the coveted Late Late spot - especially if the men win gold. or maybe he'll have to do an Olympic special and fit them all in!

Hope appledrop is OK, nothing for him/her to complain about from the comfort of his couch for a few hours after that medal.

Still no Gold, this is just not good enough. Embarassing even.

How long are RTÉ going to spend on this boring time trial?

Simone Biles just announced she will also not compete in the individual all around final on Thursday. She'll make a call about competing in next week's event finals later on (she was the first gymnast to qualify for them all since 1992). Another American, Jade Carey, who placed 9th in the qualifying round will compete in her place (only the top 2 athletes from each country are allowed to move on to finals). She'll join teammate Sunisa Lee who placed 3rd behind Biles and Brazilian Rebecca Andrade after qualifying.

I'm no rowing expert, but is that event known as the cockless four?

Great to wake up to a medal!

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,245 ✭✭✭✭leahyl

So delighted for the girls! It's wonderful to wake up and see the pics on the RTE app of them with their medals! Well done girls!

Dezzie obviously ‘gooted ’ there will be no ‘partiee’ and that each discipline will go home separately .

No big homecoming gig for himself and NK.

couldn’t get much of a ‘rise’ from the families of the rowers either.

All too tired and Dezzie ready to ‘paartie’.

Coxless 4,all boats at the Olympics are Coxless these days bar the 8 (which is a brilliant race to watch).

Shame lightweight rowing is gone after Paris 2024 because Dominic casey and the the town of skibbereen has a thing for churning out world class athletes in that grade. Though needless to say heavyweight rowing is going well this Olympics, 😁

I remember the days of it being all on Sonia and praying maybe a boxer might come through

Now we least have some very good medal prospects and we are far more competitive in a range of sports. May it long continue.

Before we were praying to win a medal now we expect at least 2 or 3 medals and thats great. Hopefully we have 2 or 3 medals secured by weekend.

    Compare us to New Zealand?

Same population and rugby in NZ is as dominant as GAA there

  • Registered Users Posts: 24,422 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

I would say just boxing in fairness for most of the time. The big dent in out medals is the 60s to 80s when we won nothing till Treacy came along. I don't know much about Irish Olympics back then but I assume it was a case of "eat your spuds and give it a lash" stuff with no money behind it whereas many other countries were "amateur"

There has been a huge improvement in recent years but even if we let's say build a velodrome finally we still wouldn't be able to afford someone like Shane Sutton (not that we would want him given is personal reputation)

Just to give an idea what we are up against GB cycling just got awarded £35 million just to prep for the Paris Olympics

The Former Yugoslavia countries and NZ do put us in shade. However read about the funding and infrastructure they put into sport and there is the reason they do well.

Croatia and NZ health system I read before have had huge benefits from investing in sport. We don't have same outlook here. We must pump money into Greyhound racing and Horses racing and we only see short term fixes like most things we do here.

Plenty of poor countries have a good medals tally

The carribean nations spring to mind ,as do Eastern European ones

Even knowing the result, I was nervous watching the rowing this morning. A very good night for Ireland with the two rowers and Kurt Walker going through.

Aoife O'Rourke and Nhat up next - fingers crossed

From my limited experience of New Zealand rowing is big there.

    So is sailing.

We would much more into soccer than the kiwis.

Of course they also have cricket being the good little colony they were.

Also remember we have football, hurling and camogie as major sports.

Imagine if the hurlers and camogie players played hockey how good our hockey team would be.

Yipee, well done ladies, finally a medal 🥉.

Well deserved, hopefully we have a few more coming our way in the rowing/ sailing events.
