Excel question

hello folks. Quick excel question...

In the above, is there a way to quickly assign the costs to their appropriate categories?

Something like 'if Colum B equals row E/F/G/H, then put the figure from column D in there'?

The idea is to drag the formula over the entire spreadsheet and it will automatically populate for me. Real life version is a lot bigger so don't fancy doing it manually!

Sumif formula would be easiest

Sumif $b:$b, e$1, $d:$d

You'd end up with the whole insurance total in one cell instead of two cells like you have there tho

If I understand you correctly im assuming you want to automate what you have done already? I think a simple if statement should work.

=If("Category Name", D1, "N/A")

I believe this is what you're looking for

=IF($B2=E$1,$D2,"")

Put that in E2, then just drag it to H9 (or wherever your last cell is)

thanks everyone, i appreciate all the feedback.

in the end, excel proved too complicated so i ended up sorting it by category and copy/pasting all the values across (not exactly what the client wanted - he will put in dates in the future so i can rearrange).

i suppose from the off, my spreadsheet wasn't clear. the insurance, advertising, rest, wages i populated manually. i was looking for a formula that would do that for me - and if yours's does, i apologise! i just dont get the complicated formulas.

although i havent tried 28064212's formula.
