Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I'm receiving notifications each day for threads I have never subscribed to.

I have unticked all the options in 'notification preferences' a few days ago but the notifications keep coming, up to fifty per day sometimes.

In some forums the screen moves on the mobile site, so it goes over towards the right and block some content. Easy to move back but annoying all the same. I know this was an issue after the migration but it seemed to have been fixed.

That's the same across quite a few areas. They are showing the thread starter and date started under the heading of most recent post.

Here's one for you all.. It's no longer possible to access or edit the subscriber preferences. The old links are not redirected, and I've not yet been able to find in the new interface where to go to see/modify the subscription settings.

I just received a notification of a new post from a thread I started in 2020 - however I don't think I was ever subscribed. maybe I followed the thread originally. But I've had no interaction on the thread other than viewing it briefly this morning. In fact its the first post on the thread since the changeover.

The "where do you get your news" thread in CA/IMHO is missing page numbers so you can't click onto the next page. Some threads have the page numbers unders the opening post. This should really be at the top and bottom of all pages.

On mobile, not sure if it's the same on desktop.

There's no obvious way of finding your previous posts. I have just spent 5 mins hunting around and the only way I could find my threads was in some obscure section of my profile.

It seems a rather obvious and necessary function to have in a complex forum.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,497 ✭✭✭✭Hotblack Desiato

Yes it's on threads which have not been posted in since the switchover.

    Scrap the cap!

On the mobile site, when I press my avatar, an options bar appears, but when I then press the icon for my profile nothing happens. (When I press the icon for notifications, I can see a sliver of what’s supposed to appear in full.)

Also, is there no way to start a reply without going to the bottom of the thread?

Another thing I've noticed is when you're looking at a forum, there is no longer an indicator/tick on the envelope icon to the left of the Thread title to show that you've previously posted in that thread.

I found it a handy feature anyway.

Doesn't count as missing functionality but I just noticed timestamps are local time now. How nice. But I was sort of used to translating everything to GMT, seemed fitting for an Irish board. Could we have the local and the Irish time? That would be neat.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,760 ✭✭✭✭thesandeman

    I prefer a 24hr clock.

Set up a poll. It should be simple enough these days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,505 ✭✭✭✭Esel

Full date and timestamp on every post is badly needed.

This morning I got notified of new posts in some threads, but not all I am subscribed to.

Single page in Motors main category, see screenshot below.

That's entire page, just ads cropped a bit.

    Opera on Win7 x64, all addons/extensions off.

    1. Legacy thanks on posts have disappeared.
    2. No in-thread search function.
    3. No search function for posts by a particular user on a thread.

Can't start a sentence with a number or it automatically turns it into a numbered list. eg. if I try type [ 15. FFF ] on a new line (without the brackets), the following will happen:

    1. FFF

is it not possible to search a single forum any more? The old search wasn't great, but the new search seems even worse.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,107 ✭✭✭✭loyatemu

I like these 3 little dots that appear at the top of some threads, and only give the option "Dismiss"

like a button that says "do not press"

all "boards.ie" business links at the bottom of the page bring you to "page not found"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,325 ✭✭✭iLikeWaffles

Worse still they don't show in older threads. They either didn't make the migration or the links to them are broken.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,946 ✭✭✭✭Mars Bar

I see two different post counts on my profile beside my posts.

It only seems to be noticeable because I started a thread.

Those apply to stickied posts and basically allow you to unsticky those posts for yourself. Not a good option to give as it relates to forum charters

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,189 ✭✭✭waynescales1

Surely the list of threads in the My Forums subsection should be sorted by Latest Post, rather than alphabetically by forum?

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 10,487 Mod ✭✭✭✭Andrew76

I'm probably in the minority but I prefer it sorted by forum name.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,869 ✭✭✭✭mrcheez

There's no "Search Thread" function which was something I used all the time in megathreads.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,522 ✭✭✭✭Cookie_Monster

Tried to report a post for quote a massive wall of text needlessly. Got the attached error popup.

no idea if the report went through or not...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,760 ✭✭✭✭thesandeman

By looking at the screenshot you only have one 🌟 (whatever that's about) they've given me three stars even though I joined about four years after you and have only a quarter of your posts.

That doesn't fit in with the Vanilla "philosophy". This isn't a discussion site any more, it's an even more broken version of Reddit where all that matters is what's been posted in the last five minutes, no search, no history, no context.

And that above is a totally different post to the one I hit Quote on. WTF is going on??

    Scrap the cap!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,497 ✭✭✭✭Hotblack Desiato

There is no way to avoid quoting a massive wall of text...

    Scrap the cap!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,532 ✭✭✭✭Leg End Reject

The desktop site only shows one star regardless of post count, whereas the mobile site shows the correct number. If you got a notification to say you were promoted to level 3 you should have 3 stars.

Postcount variations are because posts on some forums weren't counted on the old site, but are here. No idea why the 2 different tallies are showing though.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,189 ✭✭✭waynescales1

Has the search feature not always been absolutely atrocious?

I search for threads with the term "apple" in them, and instead of getting the threads that mentioned apples yesterday, last week and last month, I get search results from 8, 10, 12 years ago?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,497 ✭✭✭✭Hotblack Desiato

And in most cases if you hit "newest first" all of the results disappear... it should default to 'newest first' anyway.

    Scrap the cap!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,522 ✭✭✭✭Cookie_Monster

there is a very easy way... simply don't quote it at all!

While AH paging's fixed, why not Motors too?

When posting on iOS Safari, I’m finding that the website (not the browser) freezes and lags, especially on longer posts.

It will suddenly stop accepting text and then start again and then just go totally unresponsive and have to be reloaded. It might, or might not, still have the text I just entered after the refresh.

Overall, it’s a very frustrating experience to post.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,082 ✭✭✭TaurenDruid

    On Chrome on desktop version.

New post, or replying to a post.

Type the "greater than" symbol, followed by a number, then the percentage sign. So a sentence like "greater than [but using the symbol] 80% of people think this new interface is shite!" Keep typing, and the symbol-number-percentage disappear, and whatever you're typing has now become a quote block.

Further testing, it looks like using the "greater than" symbol and a space causes this to happen.

Are posts on a thread supposed to be displayed in time order ?

I made a post just now and it is showing as

Hopefully you can make that out...it seems that my post made at 6.36pm is bracketed by posts made at 4.11pm and 4.12pm

^^ Seeing your post I've strong feeling boards attachment compressing ratio is set wrong. Seriously wrong.

On the other note - did you try refresh the page? It may align posts in appropriate order.

What's causing the bar which stays in the same place as I scroll. Using chrome

I wonder if that has something to do with how the platform is saving your text as a Draft while you type, where the pause is where it's saving the draft?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,680 ✭✭✭TheChrisD

I was going to say that using the > symbol is markdown lingo for starting a quote, so it auto-converting would make sense. However what doesn't make sense and is clearly a bug is that it's auto-converting when the > is in the middle of a sentence.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,325 ✭✭✭iLikeWaffles

Yes because it is markdown, it is supposed to work like that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,082 ✭✭✭TaurenDruid

Is it? Should there not be an option to switch on/switch off markdown? It makes the 'greater than' and 'less than' functions completely unavailable. It's minor - but it is a bug.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,325 ✭✭✭iLikeWaffles

Oh I see what you're saying. It is built into the editor don't use the symbol when typing, be weary of typing hashtags also.

Typing anywhere in a sentence or paragraph with the > symbol turns the line into a quote.

That shouldn't happen. > should be and needs to be at the start of the sentence, definitely should not turn the whole block into a quote. Surrounding it with ** or 2 underscores will get around it (__) these symbols in markdown are * italics * and __ bold __ (without the space before and after), others are ~~ strikethrough ~~

Also once you delete the space where you placed the symbol it should delete the quoted block. There is no way to remove the quote (not even in the format menu), you have to either delete and start over or move the text out of the quote block, copy and paste will copy the formatting also. There is however a history for undo in the text editor CTRL + Z so if it is done mistakenly you can get the formatting back.

Also typing the symbol followed by text will delete any text if there is no space following the > symbol that definitely should not happen. ie "><randomtextHITSPACE" this should be seen as is

Rich Text Editor. To edit a paragraph's style, hit tab to get to the paragraph menu. From there you will be able to pick one style. Nothing defaults to paragraph. An inline formatting menu will show up when you select text. Hit tab to get into that menu. Some elements, such as rich link embeds, images, loading indicators, and error messages may get inserted into the editor. You may navigate to these using the arrow keys inside of the editor and delete them with the delete or backspace key.
