Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

As the title says, and as a lot of posters are starting to say, roll it back.

we have no interest in this new site. It’s horrible. It’s so difficult to navigate, everything is so difficult. Apart from navigating, the worst for me is the new white look, the no “my threads” option, and the activity section…..I mean come on, this isn’t Facebook, I don’t give 2 shjtes if somebody changes their profile picture or has been promoted to level 1B. What a waste.

can you please swallow your pride and bring back the old format. Make it a little sexier if you wish, but only a little.

I see forums seem to have only one page of threads ?

Is there a way to see older threads or do I need to google them in the domain boards.ie to get them ?

And what about user post history ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,439 ✭✭✭davetherave

To see what was "My Threads", just click on your profile picture in the top right and go to bookmarks if you are on desktop, or on the mobile site click on your picture and then click on the star. It's two clicks, if you were anywhere other than the old homepage you'd have to do two clicks as well, one to get to the homepage, and then one on the My Threads tab.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,768 ✭✭✭dmc17

It's shocking bad. There's no structure to it, obviously wasn't tested at all and it's as slow as a wet week

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,246 ✭✭✭✭Dyr

    It's dogshit wrapped in catshit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,498 ✭✭✭✭fullstop

It’s absolutely horrific. It’s like they tried to make the worst product possible when they created the mobile site. Sticky threads, charters and regular threads just melt into one big wall of text with no distinguishing features. Where are my followed forums gone? Are there any stats on site traffic since going live with this? I’ve noticed in some of the forums that are usually very busy, there are hardly any posts.

No, you’re the ones who are wrong. Something something volunteers, etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,928 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

And this is the truth unfortunately. We'll be told that they're working on the issues, to be patient, things are improving etc - but at no point will they hold their hands up and admit they got this wrong, and they CERTAINLY won't roll back to the previous version of the site.

This mess is here to stay, and with only one Dev, one volunteer, and no mention of Vanilla in Odhran's update the other day, it'll be months before we're back to even where we were 2 weeks ago (if at all!)

    It's a complete travesty.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,507 ✭✭✭tinpib

Yep, it's pretty much unusable. I'd say their traffic stats makes for shocking reading right now.

  • Registered Users Posts: 471 ✭✭Piehead

either roll it back or lose ad revenue. It’s very simple….

All I want are a few easy features:

    1. Page numbers at the top as well as the bottom
    2. To be able to see the number of replies to a thread before opening it
    3. To be able to see the name of the last poster and the time they posted without going into the thread
    4. Some way of distinguishing the stickied threads from regular threads.
    5. Coke and hookers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,711 ✭✭✭GerardKeating

not actually seen an add on the site since the make over.

It's not difficult to navigate. https://boards.ie/categories

Take it from the top, scroll down the page, opening the forums you want to participate in in a new tab. Then work away.

Or else cntl+f to find your forums. How many big forums are there .. After Hours, Current Affairs, maybe one or two others. It is not an ordeal to find on the page linked above

All the forums are right there.

ROLL IT BACK,PLEASE.At least I can sign in without being told I don't exist.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 686 ✭✭✭steamsey

I've no idea about the complexity of rolling it back, so I'm not saying do that, but I will say that this is now a terrible site. It's pretty slow for me, very hard to see whats going on, and really seems to be all downside as I've yet to see one user focused improvement.

If this were the finished version, and I'm sure it's not, then it would be game over.

Mad that number 5 is the most likely of those options!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,418 ✭✭✭dnme

Finding this new version hard to navigate. Also my old threads no longer show their attached images. I genuinely think, for the effort, the outages and now the result, the project has not been worth it. The old vBulletin system just worked.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,188 ✭✭✭kennethsmyth

It’s not just a few features that are an issue, it’s a total ball of shite. My go to forums I can find nothing. Can’t read or browse easily. Categories are a mess with repeats etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,188 ✭✭✭kennethsmyth

I’m done with boards if it’s staying this way, roll it back. Reddit here I come.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,565 ✭✭✭K.Flyer

    Two other points,

If you post on a new thread you are not automatically following the thread, you must click on the star (follow?) to actually follow the thread.

Can't see who has thanked posts or even if you have thanked it.

    Much preferred the previous ways.

What does the message I have saying I've been promoted "level 3" mean? What are the different levels?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,199 ✭✭✭artvanderlay

Agreed with previous poster: I'm done with boards if it stays like this. It looks absolute shite. The old site was an glowing example to other forum websites worldwide: easy to navigate and user friendly. This is just ghastly.

Tis very isolating as well. I miss the community presence, truly. :(

It certainly is a crap result. The work in progress excuses just don’t cut it. Roll it back and go back to the drawing board. It hasn’t worked and whoever’s trying to stick to their guns with Vanilla on this one needs to be told to step aside now.

    There's no going back

I have seen a lot of improvements since it has gone live so if you want to fix the site, then constructive input will help. Rolling back is never going to happen. The site was migrated for a reason

I am very impressed that they spent so much effort to replicate the old look and feel on the desktop version. Mobile is not there or even close to there yet, but I think they will get there

The few days that Boards were down made me realise that, for all its flaws, it does provide something really valuable that is not available elsewhere on the vast internet.

It will get better.Let the devs work on it and we'll either adapt, or the site will be updated

"No categories were found." on mobile, an error on desktop. What am I missing?

There's an alternative forum launched today for those who don't fancy moving to Reddit: https://****/

As pointed out by many, responsive styling and functionally is simply not fit for purpose. Surely with the vast majority of users accessing on mobile devices, nailing the responsive product was a pre-migration requirement? Looking at some of the really active threads lately, post volume seems way down on pre-migration levels. Could be the good weather, but not sure that’s going to be the only factor.

In my day job I’ve been responsible for lots of migrations of enterprise web apps over the years - lift and shifts for platform reasons, migrating users to brand new applications, retiring legacy apps etc. so I totally get how difficult change management is, never mind the engineering challenges and dealing with monolithic code. People hate change, that’s a given. But in this case really basic stuff wasn’t ready. Even the fact the site was down for so long shows this wasn’t approached correctly. Referencing migrating 20 years of data as a massive challenge is something that could have been managed (I.e. migrate the 20 years of data up to a set point in time, get everything working and validated on new platform in your own time, when ready take down the legacy site, merge any changed data to new platform since initial data migration, then launch). I realise I’m not privy to any number of possible technical issues that could have prevented that approach, but the whole thing just seems poorly thought out.

I saw a post saying there is only one dev for Boards.ie? Seems to me no matter how strong she/he is, there is way too much work for one person here to get the product back up to spec. Has any thought been given to either a fund raiser to get cash in to bring contract help in, or to open sourcing of just the primary (non-core IP/commercially sensitive) elements that need addressing? Surely plenty of experienced devs on Boards willing to help out, with PRs going through the actual Boards dev for code review and approval?

All I need is a my forums dropdown, like we had before, on mobile and desktop, please for the love of god its nigh on unusable on desktop and mobile is just a disaster.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,944 ✭✭✭✭scudzilla

Awful site, awful experience, if it stays like this i'm out, not that the powers that be will give 2 shites

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,523 ✭✭✭the_pen_turner

to me there are only 2 core objective for a site like this .

1 is to have an easy way to find sections to create threads in or to find existing ones

2 is to allow discussion in those threads. people need to come back to threads to continue the discussion

right now both of them are a disaster.

It appears this type platform was not formulated for the mass communications Boards is known for. Vanillas restrictive design seems geared toward drastically smaller, commercial niche markets with minimal clientele interaction.. Commercial correspondence vs Community-wide interconnections - there is a visceral difference.

Once a major storm hits Ireland, when so many frequent Boards in times of emergency, I fear Vanillas system may prove inadequate, overload and go down at crucial times when communication is vital (especially given Canada's already proven non-work weekends).

Actually had a dream last night that they rolled it back and it was working again. It’s the end for this site, what a shame.

be honest Boards, if your intention was to improve, have you achieved that?

Allowing for getting used to the new layout, at best it's the same, at worst it's poor IMO

It's a brave new boards and I don't like it too much effort involved finding topics and users and threads even. I have used boards for my hobbies medical/disability issues and for the sheer fun but this this is torture.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,269 ✭✭✭CantGetNoSleep

Dealing with the big issues there.

    Roll it back.

How do you get to your statistics? This is how I checked if someone had quoted my so I could respond etc. Cant find it on this new site. Yeah not liking it so far.

Roll back is never going to happen.

But the touch site is a, disaster. I've hardly posted as I keep having to search for my regular fora.

    ROLL IT BACK

    +1

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,762 ✭✭✭✭Inquitus

All it needs is dropdowns of the top menus and the replacement of the my followed forums dropdown, at least then it will be usable, while you fix less big issues, and I am talking Desktop, the mobile version is simply unusable as it stands.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 18,693 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kimbot

Im sure theres plenty of little gremlins etc in the system and they will be ironed out over the coming days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,861 ✭✭✭✭mrcheez

How do I search within a 100 page thread for a specific piece of text (as in the old Search Thread function)?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,211 ✭✭✭✭Suckit

Why can't links just open in a new tab? Why this crap you are leaving..

+ all the other issues mentioned. I'm really hoping to get used to this new site, but it is a struggle.

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 7,357 Mod ✭✭✭✭HildaOgdenx

I really miss the 'Most Thanked'. It often meant I ended up reading a thread or being on a forum that I would otherwise never have read.

This new set up is very clunky, I don't find it user friendly.

At the moment, I bookmark threads I'm interested in. Otherwise I feel as if I would struggle to find them again.
