Reg that suits the car

Any premium car just looks better with a D-reg. It might be ridiculous or snobbery, but it's something that the market seems to agree with too.

My previous two cars were G and MH regs and they always took something away from it for me. Thankfully balance has been restored with my recent purchase :)

MZB 250 on a Mercedes 250 many moons ago. It had an O’Briens of Tallow sticker on the back window.

Saw plenty of trucks with reg to match either the horsepower or model.

    For example 98-DL-144 was for a Scania144-460 or 144-530

My neighbour had 98-DL-3260, and the plate had a space between the 3 and the 2, as it was a 260hp scania rigid.

    211-DL-770 is for a 770hp Scania truck.

I see a few Porsche 911s with the numbers 911 somewhere in the reg plate. Always makes me roll my eyes.

I had a Volvo S60 a few years ago and the last 2 digits of the reg were 60 but I don't think it was deliberate on the part of the first owner. Also had a Honda St1100 motorbike with the number 1100 in the reg and I can definitely say it was not intentional as I brought the bike in myself and did the whole VRT thing... They just assigned the next number in line. :)

I sold a Land Cruiser before that had the reg 2982 on it, which is the cc of the engine. Pure coincidence.

Also sold a new Yaris to a retired English lady that had the number 08-county-1916

I remember 07MH55 when it was new. Audi S5 in white. Think it's half skangered up now :(

CSI633 was another famous one I used to see on the longmile road. BMW 633 CSI

I used to see 00KY911 every day when I was in my old job. Volkswagen Beetle Porsche 911, appeared to be a daily driver. Nice way to get about!

One that infuriated me was 95 W 201... :o and a wannabe with 05 G 55. Those brakes are fooling nobody!

I dream of the day I'll see P406DGT, if it exists... It would have to be an XUD too... ;)

    07-ke-535 on a 535d

That's it alright, feckin ages ago that was.

There was a levin/trueno about with a 111 plate too but can't remember the county,

Old boss of mine had 98-ke-555 too, no prizes for guessing what that was on :pac:

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,597 ✭✭✭tdf7187

I have seen any number of Porsche 911's with '911' appearing in the numbers. Also used to see that Aston Martin with the plate altered to look like 007 (as in Bond, James Bond) someone mentioned a few years' back.

    Saw a 2008 Ferrari F430 with reg plate 08D 4301.

    Also, this: :D

    EEJ 1 T

    Audi RS6

A friend bought a new Mini, way back, and got MNI 1. He called it Anagram :)

I'm wondering now if my friend's mini was "1 MNI" and not "MNI 1". Either way he called it "Anagram"

What years were the two regs?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,513 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

    1 MNI would be 1983

MNI 1 would have been much earlier. Probably mid 60s

Maybe it's a false memory, but I distinctly remember seeing a car in Dublin one time with the reg 666 EZE. This was in the 80s -- it was a fancy car, BMW or Mercedes. Where would a license plate like that be from (besides the underworld)?!
    Dublin 1978.

  • Registered Users Posts: 193 ✭✭jucko

I saw an M5 with the plate 181-LM-5

i had an sl320 with the reg 05lm5 .....same owner? i think they own a hotel.

A lot of premium cars are leased vehicles. Most of the leasing companies head offices are located in Dublin, so they will always have a "D" registration plate, regardless of where the car ends up in the country.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,454 ✭✭✭CoBo55

It's easy to get a D reg when you get a new car, just get the dealer to put in your address and instead of the actual county put in Dublin. When you go to tax it online using the vin number change the address to the correct one and you're sorted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,725 ✭✭✭wassie

Potentially also gives you a better resale price/wider market if you choose to sell after a few years.

633 CSI and (iirc) 635 CSI

    I remember them well, there was also 628CSI, CSI628, CSI633 and CSI635.

My last car, a Carina II, had a very special reg 89LH****. It was a one owner, bought by a man on his retirement in 1989 from Lufthansa. His work number was LH****. He lived in Dublin but used his brother's address in Louth to get the number.

    50TIK would also be good.

I don't see why not, TIK was a mid 70s Dublin issue.

Ok thanks, it was "1 MNI" so.

@Blue850 - Interesting that you knew about "1 MNI". Did you know the car? I'm almost sure it was black with some white. The first owner's initials were "TM".

Ok, so, in late 1999, I reserved 00D1150. Cost me IR£250.00.

What did I reserve it for?

I recall many muscle bikes of the 80s and early 90s had the cc In the reg.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,694 ✭✭✭✭L-M

There was a Focus T230 with the Reg 00LK7230.

I remember before lads used to Register M cars as “113” or “115” and then put a very faint v between the two ones to make it look like an M.

    Actually 08D113 is an Example.

    Eww, RN.

Actually a lovely part of the country, in my opinion. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,937 ✭✭✭SmartinMartin

There was a Renault Clio around with the reg **C 410, which read **Clio, which I thought was clever, given the restricted Irish system. I don't think the gubbiment realise what a money spinner they could have on their hands issuing private plates.

That would be a cop car, low Dublin numbers are nearly all cop cars

Ah, he's only helping keep down the price on non-D used cars. Sure in these days of DPFs and DMFs it's as logical to avoid D reg cars.

I still say that the Government are missing a trick there with used cars.

When you buy it, you should be allowed re-register it as part of the transfer process, maybe for a small fee (<100. Should be less but this Ireland). Lots of people would register to their home/preferred county and few extra quid for the tax man.

Not at all. It's reflected in the market as I said.

I'll grant you though that a lot of non-Dubs have a chip about "dem up der" alright. :)

Just get a vintage car and put any number you like on it that's the norm here in Ireland.

Used to always be a premium XX D 4 car. Like a CLK, Porsche or a Jaguar. Pretty tacky to be fair. Then the recession came. A Seat Altea in 2010.

Personally I’d hate a distinctive reg. Would feel like I’d have no anonymity. Not that I do anything dodgy but would feel I’m on show.

Would it be primarily dealers reserving specific plates for their press car?

Would it be primarily dealers reserving specific plates for their press car?

Many sandyford dealers used to put show regs on their UK imports such as 201 D 1 and you would see them test driving around sandyford. In theory they would have green dealer plates inside the window.

The cost of pre-booking a reg used to be cheap, then it went crazy expensive, so even dealers would think twice. Generally it's showy cars from rich owners now.

Some clever people don't pay to reserve a number, but they are in counties with less demand and less likely to have people pay to reserve. I have heard they (via dealer interfaces) wait for registrations to be released and take for free things like 201kk1 as no one has reserved it. I think they are released on new years eve. One bus company does this regularly.

The Facebook group Irish vehicles past and present often has the details, and you can look up the reg using online tools. Some regs are reserved such as the first one for Dublin and possibly Cork.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,426 ✭✭✭ofcork

A lot of the AMG mercedes had the plates to match over the years 04 C 55 or 63 etc.
